Amid anti-Korean fears, Kōhaku, 'makeshift Japan' bans K-Pop, says Korea
NHK has gotten more strict on the appearance of Korean artists on its famous year-end show, "Kōhaku Uta Gassen," due to growing anti-Korean sentiment in the country, reported the Fuji evening newspaper. Korean media has also started to pay close attention to this situation, one by one reporting on it.
The Korean media has released such headlines as "NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen bans K-Pop stars among anti-Korean anxiety," "Japan hurriedly orders NHK to ban K-Pop on Kōhaku," spreading the news that there is a high probability of K-Pop not being included on a show that is considered the height of Japanese tradition and authority in the entertainment world.
Earlier in the month, NHK President Matsumoto said, "Lee Myung Bak demanding apologies from the His Majesty the Emperor, as well as the Takeshima problem has created concern over whether Korean artists will be invited to perform, due to growing animosity from viewers," at a press conference on September 6.
This was quickly picked up by the media in South Korea. As well, last year's Kōhaku saw Tohoshinki, Shojojidai and KARA perform, but today, the popularity of K-Pop is not nearly at the same level as it was before, they reported.
Korean netizens who saw this expressed disappointment. The media pointed out that things like the Takeshima problem, Lee Myung Bak's demand for an apology from His Majesty the Emperor, etc. do not just affect diplomats and politicians, but the entertainment world as well.
However, in contrast we see Japanese politicians say rash and careless remarks as a habitual behavior, and it is impossible to suppress sarcastic laughter when a makeshift nation like Japan would insert politics into its cultural domain like this. It seems the Korean media will continue to berate Japan until they stop interjecting politics into every area of their country.

It has recently been made public that there will be no inclusion of K-Pop artists in NHK's "Kōhaku Uta Gassen" this year.

Since the old days, the implicit rule that "Politics has no place is the entertainment industry" has been around, but that is no longer the case. With the Takeshima problem looming, there will be an unmistakable pause in the cultural exchange between the two nations. The decision to exclude K-Pop from Kōhaku Uta Gassen holds strong meaning.
