Tiger JK speaks about 'The Creators Project' event

Tiger JK has apologized for his “racist” outburst at a recent event for ‘The Creators Project‘.

He tweeted earlier today:

According to Tiger JK, hecklers in the audience insisted that he perform the “horse dance” from the choreography of Psy‘s “Gangnam Style“, and he was unable to hold back his frustration. He tweeted, “Creators project event other night. I went crazy on all them white folks in the crowd, Cussing them out. During my set, these dudes kept telling me to horse dance , F rapping just dance. I had to cut all my song short. Without self control. My F*** you turned into F** everybody To F*** all the white people to F*** CNN To F *** Hollywood. To Fu** all yall who think Asians are here to make you laugh by dancing my asses off. F** Hollywood thinkin Asians are just a comic relief.”

It was the third time that the rapper featured as the representative artist from South Korea. ‘The Creators Project’, sponsored by Intel and Vice magazine, is a global campaign that supports new and rising artists who use technology to go past the boundaries of creative expression. Tiger JK is also currently propelling ‘The Wanderers‘ project with Yoon Mi Rae and visual artist Lumpens to prevent school violence.

This is the major problem with Psy's success/the reason why it's Psy and not Se7en or GD - because Psy is big and looks middle aged and his video is silly and the song is a club banger-type situation. Hopefully some people see him for the talented artist his is, but more than a few are laughing at him at the same time. He's an exotic novelty to them, and Psy in his awesomeness could care less what Americans think about him, he's just riding the wave, but anyone who's not doing anything novelty is going to get backlash and not be treated with respect. It's sad that those fools treated Tiger that way, but it doesn't surprise me at all. In fact, I think the comments would have been even worse if it had been, say, Tasha (God help the fool who disrespects Tasha around Tiger) or another female artist instead.

Absolutely things need to change, but until then I fear that it's going to be like this.

I get why he was mad, but why post the rant on Twitter? Maybe I feel like the square between circles to say this, but I hate social media - lol. I will just never understand why people post their feelings and rants on Twitter/Facebook/Whatever. People will always judge you on it and it will always come to bite you in the ass eventually.

Because he wanted to get his feelings out? Is there a right way of expressing yourself? Did you want him to write an article in the newspaper or something?

He was upset because people were practically being racist towards him and lumping all Asian artists as something funny and he spoke out about it. Bite him in the ass? LOL NO. I'm glad he did what he did because he spoke up about like many of us who experience racism as well as microagressions on a daily basis do.

What happened to him is so incredibly fucked and the article that he linked from (what I'm assuming is) a white audience member's perspective passive-aggressively vilifying him made me roll my eyes so hard I almost gave myself whiplash (you can read it here (http://chincha.co.uk/2012/09/the-creators-project-2/) if you're morbidly curious).

With the exception of the whole ~racism toward white people~ thing (because while prejudice exists, racism is impossible, and I say this as someone who identifies as white but has experienced countless racist comments and behaviours because others view me as a POC), I stand behind him and his words and actions 100%.

After 2NE1′s whirlwind performance, which was greeted by the audience with an ocean of smart phone LED screens, the elated crowd remained in good spirits despite being subjected to a torrent of verbal abuse by Tiger JK of popular hip hop act Drunken Tiger. As an aggressive tirade of expletives poured from their mouths, most of which began with an ‘f’ and were sometimes preceded by the word ‘mother’, the English-speakers surrounding us at the venue looked bemused by this strange turn of events, particularly when he started bragging about the money he was paid for the show (100k apparently – let’s hope that was in won) and giving “props to Psy” (K-pop star who has gained recent international success with his hit Gangnam Style). Carrying on with his sour outpouring, he also chastisted Hollywood for their use of Asians as “comic relief” and brought his own brand of racism into the equation with some less-than-PC comments about “white people”. He has now somewhat apologised for this on Twitter.

The horse dance is a reference to Psy’s dance in the worldwide viral hit Gangnam Style. Tiger JK was offended by these comments and saw them as racist as well distracting.

Unless you were right at the front of the crowd (which our reviewer wasn’t) then this wasn’t clear to the rest of the people at the show. The story behind the comments was not clear until Tiger JK explained his point of view on Twitter 4 days after the concert.

On Wednesday, MissDrunkenCamp linked us to her website, which is the number one English fan site for Tiger JK. As someone who has known Tiger JK for a long time, MissDrunkenCamp gives her own heartfelt perspective on the situation and on the rapper himself, who she strongly insist is “one of the last people I would call a racist.” Worth a read.

I was waiting for this to come on Omona cause no one on /r/kpop or akp seems to realize racism and prejudice are different things and how you can't be racist to white people.

Tiger JK doesn't need to apologize for anything. This was one of the few things I was worried about legitimately about PSY's success, because I already had friends who expected the rest of kpop to be like this and then vehemently rejected it after they found out not everything is Gangnam Style.

probably because the "racism=power+prejudice" definition is a minority one, and people mostly go with the dictionary definition

1) The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, esp. so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races

which absolutely allows for racism against white people.

Tiger JK makes a good point but if it was just a few hecklers and not the whole crowd he would've been better off holding his anger. Hecklers are everywhere and while IA the PSY movement isn't helping kpop at all losing your cool at a concert isn't the right way to go about it.

I'm glad he went off, as much as I am happy for Psy's success I knew it would stray into shuckin and jivin territory in the sense that he's literally been reduced to a dance. We as Kpop fans just see the song for another catchy Korean track with social connotations. Everyone else sees a chubby 'Chinese' guy dancing and rapping in a language they don't understand.
