Song of Communication
It is the side of a top star.
They are KPOP stars that are under the constant scrutiny of the public eye, and they use all of their bodies and strength when they perform explosive stages all over the world; they are 2PM. Youngest member, Chansung, tells this magazine what it means to be an idol singer in these digital times.
His body shows the taut lines and lean muscle that hours of training at the gym have produced, his face is full and proper. Even in this season of numerous KPOP stars, 2PM can definitely be considered public figures. Chansung, the group’s magnae, is perhaps the member with the best body proportions. Trendy European style clothing in sizes 46-48 fit him the best. “Going to the gym to build up my physique is a necessity to me. Likewise, with singing and dancing, as well as reading and learning and playing games; these are things that I cannot do without.” Though he says these things, such a popular idol will find it difficult to devote time for such activities, and they do need to priortise how they spend their time. “Even on our days off there is no real sense of “I’m relaxing now”. For example, not only do we have vocal lessons, we have to sing while moving from place to place. But from today on, I wish to say goodbye to this kind of lifestyle, and focus my energy on acting. My job is to express the depths of myself, and so I demand the highest standards for myself, and I will put my whole heart into it, because I want to do it to the best of my capabilities. I want to have exchanges with a lot more people.”
The prevalence of technology has also had a large influence on the manner in which idol groups are produced. The “exchanges” that Chansung talks about hold a lot more meaning in today’s context. “Because news travels quickly, now is the time where artists cannot tell lies, and the burden to be honest has definitely increased.” However, in a time where people are pursuing the latest in communicative technologies and innovation, he is a person who clearly has actively grasped the situation. “What you show the world is extremely important, whether it is the analog or digital era; its intrinsic form does not change. However, the number of famous people is slowly rising, and that our schedules have a shorter lifespan is a certain reality. But from the audience’s perspective, being able always to see all sorts of fresh news, they will never be satisfied. From the artiste’s perspective this is very troublesome (LOL).” Additionally, considering the fact that Chansung, out of all the 2PM members, would definitely have a Twitter account, Twitter has definitely been a medium with which to have exchanges with the fans. “After posting my thoughts on Twitter, I will frequently get the response from the fans that they share similar sentiments; this sort of feedback. I can no longer rely only on my own thinking, that ‘this will always be this’, but rather I have an exchange of thought with other people from different walks of life, and this is in itself pertinent to the process of seeking an exchange. Additionally, it is through these things that I mature as a person.”
He has a lot of different activities that he wants to try. “Acting is a given, and I also want to try art and design. But because I am the sort who has to pursue any activity to the end, until I become exemplary at it, I am not allowing myself to get so engrossed in such things that I neglect my first priorities, and so they have to be put on hold.” The only exception to this self-imposed ban has been the learning of psychology. “The curious thing about mankind has always been the depths of his heart. Acting requires a certain dissection of the character, and in order to understand the background behind each line and action, I felt that learning psychology would be immensely useful. Another important reason for doing so was that I want to build up the relationships between me and the staff, so that we can all work in a better and happier environment. I was contemplating on how one can go about building such relationships, and have I decided at that juncture that learning psychology was the answer.”
Even though Chansung has been christened “perfect in all ways”, regarding his own future, he uses a phrase that seemingly refreshes and cleanses one’s soul to end this interview. “I’ve always wanted to be someone who could emphathise. I believe that, if I can understand people, perhaps only then can there be mutual enhancement of the people around me.”
