A spirited rookie whose goal is to be ‘Asia’s Number One Performance Duo’ has entered. The word performance duo itself is unfamiliar, but the identical twins who stand at 185cm make you take another look at them. For now, the public remembers Tasty only as a twin duo who dances well and sings ‘Do You Know Me.’ But Tasty is a group that has the beauty of unexpectedness. They have a lot more stories than they seem to at first sight, and they have a lot more abilities that those that are seen.

Brothers Daeryong and Soryong grew their dream of becoming singers watching H.O.T and Rain. They passed a JYP audition in 2006 with ‘Bad Boy’ and, passing in one try, started their trainee life. With their innate dance skills, they were able to stand on Park Jinyoung’s comeback stage as backup dancers within a year, and afterwards, they had the fortune to receive guidance from choreographers who made dancers for Beyonce, Chris Brown, Ne-yo, etc. for three years in New York. But after 5 years, passed, their chance to debut had not come, so in 2011, they moved to Woollim Entertainment, which housed Epik High, Nell, and Infinite.

“Twins who had the same dream, they shared their worries and distress too”

Identical twins Daeryong and Soryong are the same from the things they want to eat to the things they want to do. They both dreamt of becoming singers from a young age as they looked up to H.O.T and Rain. Both of them are the type to go all-in for something they like, so they unconditionally jumped into the harsh music industry.

“Our family was extremely against it. Because there was no one in our family other than us, they wanted us to go into an average field and get stable jobs. But usually, we are not satisfied until we do what we want to do, so we believed the in the odds of one in ten thousand and took off.” (Daeryong)

These fearless twins said they “could not even imagine” debuting in separate groups or in a group with other members. “People say that we shine the most when we are together, that it would be weird if other people were added to the two of us. So even if we didn’t ask to, we were able to debut as just two twins.” (Daeryong)

But being twins is not always a good thing. “Ever since we were young, both of us would get scolded when one of us got in trouble. We’ve gotten scolded for not looking at the camera, but recently on a music program, we both got yelled at because I ran off before the signal shut off.” (Soryong)

But still, the brothers shyly smiled as they said, “Right now, the only people who motivate us are ourselves. We support each other a lot.”

“I understand all of the insults we are getting”

The misunderstandings that arise from watching Tasty sing their debut song ‘Do You Know Me’ are not just one or two. It doesn’t have a song-like tune, and the lyrics are arrogant, unlike most rookies. The performance is amazing, but it’s difficult to avoid the criticism that “If you’re a singer, you should sing live like singers.”

“A lot of people say ‘They can’t sing,’ ‘It’s lip-synced,’ but we don’t lip-sync. But for now, we can understand people saying ‘They can’t sing.’ Because there’s not much melody.” (Daeryong)

“Since the focus goes to our performance, we don’t have a chance to show off our vocals. But if you listen to ‘SOLO,’ you can get a completely different feeling. It can be our follow-up song, and we have a lot more promotions ahead of us, so we will slowly show you everything.” (Soryong)

The controversy about their vocals has followed them since their debut. Instead of nodding and saying, “It can happen” Tasty decided to show their best performance for now through ‘Do You Know Me.’

“’It’s unfamiliar, but I keep wanting to see the dance,’ ‘The more you see it, the more you want to see it’ We’re not sure but I think that’s Tasty’s style. We usually use refreshing, big movements to match our height, but rather than thinking everything through and choreographing scientifically, we make it the way our bodies move when we hear the music.” (Soryong)

“We want to go back to 5 years ago”

‘Our mother who went through all kinds of hardships raising two playful sons and gave us everything. A mother to whom the words ‘I love you’ aren’t enough. We really miss her.’

This is the first paragraph of the Thanks To in Tasty’s first debut album. Their mother exceptionally loved the brothers, but she passed away in a car accident three months before Tasty’ debut. The brothers still tear up when their mother is mentioned. She’s not by their side, but she is still a reliable support for the brothers.

“Our mother bragged a lot while she was alive. We will become great singers later. After she passed away, the first thought we had was ‘Let’s show them that our mother wasn’t a liar.’ So that they would think ‘she raised them well.’…” (Soryong)

“We want to go back to the tough training period from 5 years ago. It’s not because we regret the amount of practice we did, but because at that time, our mom would be alive and I think we’d be able to prevent the car accident. Our mom passed away in April, so maybe that’s why the both of us hate ‘4’ very much.”

(T/N: Four is considered the number of death in Korea and some other Asian countries)

“We can move dorms if we win first”

Tasty spent as much as five years in JYP, one of the top three Korean agencies. We thought they’d feel uneasy about moving to Woollim Entertainment, who has little experience in producing idols, but Daeryong said, “A company isn’t great just because it has a lot of idols.”

Tasty has been in the company for 10 years, and before long, they were friends with their labelmate sunbae Infinite. “In our private lives, we call each other hyung, dongsaeng. It’s because they are so nice. In particular, Sungyeol advises us that if we go to the broadcasting station and courteously greet everyone, it will be good for us too. Those words help us a lot. But they didn’t advise about the stage (Laughs)” (Soryong)

CEO Lee Jungyeop, who promised Infinite about winning first and prepared a new dorm for them last winter, made the same proposition to Tasty. “Right now, we are living in Infinite’s old dorm with two trainees and two managers, but we can move if we win first. We wouldn’t mind staying as long as everyone is clean, but we were thankful he brought it up”

Mid 20s and a promise about moving dorms. At this point, wouldn’t Tasty feel a bit impatient? “There’s nothing like that. We’ve become singers. It’s important that we achieved out dream. And it’s also important how hard we work from now on. Whether the result is good or bad, we won’t be disappointed and will accept everything calmly.”

I'm all for Solo being their follow up song. And I'm pretty sure 10 years was supposed to be 10 months.

Sweet young men. Love their honesty and kindness.

I lost my mom as well and I have a lot of regrets, but I know that I was very much loved by her. Sounds like they know how much she loved them as well.

Nah, just your standard dose of hyperbole. Though I can't understand the point of bashing and trolling.

Poor them.

I don't go as far as saying they suck at singing (since their live stages has been amazing since they have so much stage charisma) but their songs sucks in general. Hopefully Woolim will give them better material next time.. :)

that's humbling and good of them to admit that they can understand why people would think they can't sing. i'll wait for more material from them...

thats really sad, about their mom. it must be heartbreaking to not be able to let someone who's supported you so much see the fruits of your labor. reminds me of donghae tbh

Considering their choreo and the intensity of their performances in general, I give them a lot of props for being able to sing live at all tbh.

I really enjoy reading their interviews. They're really down to earth. Also I didn't know about their mom. That's really sad, and she couldn't see them debut. :/ I can only hope their dad was able to see. At least they can honor her memory.

I already knew about their mother, it's really sad.
I really like them, they can dance and they have good english, but I still don't like "Do You Know Me".
And I'm glad that they get along with Infinite.

A company isn’t great just because it has a lot of idols

They really grew on me. I wasn't a huge fan of their single at first, but now it's such a catchy tune... plus they are sooo good looking and decent dancers too.

They are such sweet guys. ;~; I feel really bad hearing about their mom, I bet she would've been an amazing mom to appear on one of the variety shows with them and talk about her two amazing sons.

I love love love love love SOLO and I hope its their followup.

I don't care. I love them. I don't know why people were talking shit about their vocals in a song that REQUIRES NO VOCALS. I can't stand it. I really hate misplaced criticism.
