Beautiful foreign women for various nations are pointing an accusatory finger at foreign men who easily get involved with Korean women.

On the 6th the beautiful women of KBS2’s “Chat With Beauties” spoke critically on the topic of “Indecent Foreigners Living in Korea.”

After choosing as the worst foreigners in Korea those foreigners who always speak English or their native language, never learning Korean, and easily meet Korean women they said, “most western men approach Korean women by saying they want to learn Korean.”

They also said there are many foreigners who live in Korea for many years but speak poor Korean. Among the criticisms a particularly strong one came from Japan-born Sayuri, who said, “when you go to a foreign country, learning that country’s language is proper etiquette.”

They also implicitly criticized the attitude of Korean women who get involved with “tall foreign men who speak English.”

Kenya-born Euphracia said, “in Korea it seems that if you’re tall and just speak English well, you’re treated as the king… My other Kenyan friends were so surprised when they went out with they Korean girlfriends.” Germany-born Vera said, “if a German guy is tall then everybody thinks he’s handsome in Korea… They come to Korea and start acting like Casanova.”

UK-born Eva said, “foreign men who were not popular in their home countries are treated like kings… It’s so strange that western men who of course have very plan features are always being followed by pretty girls.”

Eva added, “if a Korean friend of mine is thinking about having a western boyfriend I tell her to let me see him first. Once my Korean friend’s boyfriend from the UK turned out to have a girlfriend back in the UK.”

Also, there has been criticism over a secretly-operated internet website where foreign men talked among themselves in terms degrading to Korean women.

The site contained problematic contents such as posts about one-night experiences with Korean women, ways to be successful at seduction, and other content degrading Korean women.

Wow, thats a LOT of over generalisation right there. I agree pretty much only with the learning the language and etiquette part. Not only have they just grouped all tall foreign men together, idk, in this category of being sleazy playboys, but they seem to ignore the fact that women do the same thing to men. We're not wholly innocent in that scale. And y'know what? We grade idols like pieces of meat too. We may not have a set plan to conquer uncharted territories, but hell, who here has seen a hot person of either gender and thought, "If I were lucky enough to get that, I so would."? Honestly. Also. Maybe, just maybe, not all "plain" western men are in a relationship to feed their egos or impress their friends or even just because the girl is beautiful.

These girls seem slightly bitter/overly pissy about this. Hypocrisy is not a pretty colour on you ladies. Don't pretend you wouldn't work the foreigner card if it got you to where you wanted to go and with whom..

YES. I get pissed off when Americans/other foreigners living in my country do not have to learn my language, when almost everyone of my countrymen can speak English. D:<

Anyway, now that I've read the other articles, I have to agree with some of the comments. And I find it weird that all the Misuda panelists agree that male foreigners in Korea are like that. :/

I quite agree, except when one is too hurried and for example has to stay in that country for like... 2 days, there isn't that much time to learn the language, is there? Which is why most countries have these translation things in the streets/shops/wherever. Just sayin'.

to be honest, this happens in my country as well.
but still, i must say its rather hypocritical of them. for one thing, they probably wouldnt be on a tv show at all if not for them being foreign.

I haven't watched the episode where they talked about this so I can't really judge them based on this piece alone; I suppose the show is mostly scripted and they edit a lot of things out.
I'm just saying, there's a possibility what they said wasn't as "harsh" as the comments on the source make it seem.

I understand the etiquette of learning a country's language if you are there for an extended period of time, but honestly, if I go to Korea for a vacation, I'm not going to be knowing anything other than a few basic phrases.

Learning a language is a serious commitment, and for people who like to travel like I do, it's not always a viable option.

The part where this becomes a problem is when tourists expect others to understand English, even when there is no reason that they should. I think it's that sense of entitlement that many American tourists have that pisses off a lot of people.

Date: 2009-07-08 02:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aici-rua.livejournal.com
But if the ~tourist ends up living in the place and still refuses to learn the language...?

I actually have a Korean classmate and she's been in the Philippines for quite a long time but she refuses to learn the language and even though she's picked up a lot of terms and she can actually understand ordinary conversations, she still tells people she doesn't know how to speak Tagalog at all.

Exactly what happens in the Philippines. My dad is a foreigner so he gets treated so much better and people go out of their way to speak English (which they obviously don't enjoy doing as English exactly isn't a piece of cake) without even considering that my dad should know Tagalog.

xD Maybe you just need the foreign men to go abroad - most of the Korean international students I knew from a summer ago were looking for pretty Caucasian girlfriends.

Eh, I think it comes from both sides.

Yeah, I don't really like ugly foreign guys who go to other countries solely to pick up girls who latch onto them for being foreign. Those are the usually the types of guys who no self-respecting woman (of any racial background) in their home country would date. The website that these guys are apparantly using does not surprise me - I have unfortunately interacted with some guys like this at my school, and the way they talk about women (especially women from their target country) is revolting. However, these women shouldn't be so foolish. A lot of guys act nice so that they can get into girl's pants, and these girls need to realize that.

And I love how this argument cannot exist without insulting Korean men. Some of these articles make them sound like cavemen. I have had good and bad experiences with Koreans; but I can honestly say that I have never been called fat or ugly, received any comments on my s-line, or been ordered to "get my bitch ass back in the kitchen and make some pie." They ain't so bad :)

These Korean women are enabling those foreign douchebags and enabling them to generalise/stereotype Korean women as easy or cheap.

i agree with this so much, people who speak english are probably the worst for this. they think they don't have to learn any of the other language cause english is a superior language or something. makes me want to slap them -_-

LOL It's not the plain looking (in western standards) foreign guys' fault if Korean girls go all crazy for them. Instead the problem is with odd Korean beauty standards and maybe how some Korean males treat women.

Date: 2009-07-08 04:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aurait.livejournal.com
There's . . . a lot to be said here, but I think the key is that we don't forget that what these women are fundamentally complaining about are not the individual, specific behaviors that they name. We can give alternate reasons or say that they're generalizations until we're blue in the face, but it doesn't matter because that's kind of beside the point. What they're complaining about are systematic abuses of structural power.

That's why the "Eight Reasons" blog post is still problematic, even though it tries to give "good" reasons for why Western men are preferred. Especially reasons like being able to offer a girl a way out of Korea and being more "masculine."It blithely ignores the unevenness in power that makes these distinctions possible, like the historically constituted conditions that allow them to have transnational mobility, while the Korean women they're dating presumably don't.

I think the thing most disturbing/indicative of power imbalance is simply this: where are the Korean women in all of this? The classic condition of the disempowered: people are constantly speaking for you.

Geez, those men sound like such douchebags.

There are so many of those cases here where I live. Every corner of the street, there's bound to be at least one Asian girl hanging off the arms of some white guy. And in many cases, it's an old, fat man with a short, young Asian girl that's at least 15 years younger than him. It's quite unsettling.

And the dumb white-men-crazy Korean women need to stop enabling these douches. Seriously.

Phew. It's a good thing I don't find white men to be attractive (no offense).
