4minute and their 'bad attitude' is the latest victim of sensationalist media

Recently, 4minute and BEAST joined forces and held the groups’ first concert in Macau.

After putting on some great performances for the fans, members of 4minute stopped by Hong Kong to be judges of tvN “K-POP Star Hunt 2,” as Cube Entertainment is one of the organizers of the contest, alongside popular Hong Kong singer G.E.M.

The event turned out to be a success as over 1,000 fans were in attendance; however, shortly after the conclusion of the event, many local newspapers and media outlets criticized the members of 4minute for their bad attitude.

As reported by the media outlets, while G.E.M. was happy to answer questions raised by the media, 4minute was only willing to answer a fixed list of questions as prepared in advance by the organizers of the event.

Additionally, while the main event was starting, all of the 4minute members suddenly expressed the need to go to the washroom, causing a delay for everyone. Upon their return to the stage, the members only waved to the fans and did not make any introductions.



Once seated, members of the media and the official photographer of the event were not allowed to take pictures of the group, as they were blocked by Cube Entertainment’s staff. The group was also not willing to take a picture with G.E.M. and the contestants.

After the show, the MC posted on Weibo, a website similar to Twitter, saying, “I’ve been an MC for many years but I’ve never encountered a time when an artist keeps changing the rundown during the show. There was a Korean staff member that was randomly playing with the director’s board while I was on stage!”

“They decided to go to the toilet when the show had already began, even though they were sitting there for 15-20 minutes prior to the start, causing the show to be dead for 10 minutes.”

“Then when they were about to come back to sit down as judges, they actually said that they were hungry and had to eat backstage before coming back out! Poor G.E.M. was sitting there waiting! Do they know how to respect others?”

Fans responded negatively to the message, causing the MC to delete her original post.

However, she followed up by saying, “Sorry, I know I’m wrong! I’m just an old woman, so I should not be saying bad things about how people don’t want to go to the washroom when they have time but instead waited for the show to start causing everyone to wait, and about how they left in the middle of the show to go backstage to eat causing problems in the rundown! I’m wrong! Very wrong!”

“I’m sure they have a very good reason! It’s just that I’m the only one who didn’t know! I should die for this! You guys should leave me alone! I’m going to leave Hong Kong right now to think about it! I’m disappearing from your sight!”

This message has been largely regarded as a sarcastic post, thus causing more fans to leave angry messages and personal insults in the comments section of her Weibo.



Let’s have a look at these allegations. Some 4Nias and anti fans will probably remember a fan account with similar accusations from when 4Minute was in Las Vegas for the K-Pop Masters.

Look at the title of that. Really all you need to know. Where were the other fan accounts? These fancams don’t seem to portray that portrait at all.

Here we have Jihyun stopping to take a fan’s gift at the airport. Jiyoon and Sohyun wave goodbye. This is right upon arriving in Las Vegas and being jetlagged.

In this fancam you can see Jihyun, Gayoon, & Jiyoon wave to the fans in the beginning. Later Hyuna stops to sign two autographs despite security telling the fans that she’s busy.

Now lets analyze Koreaboo’s translation.

If you search YouTube for “120812 4Minute” the only fancams you would find of 4Minute would be them entering before the event had even started. Let’s say they did go to the washroom, they had just finished a concert in Macau and had to rush over to Hong Kong to appear as judges. Do you usually reintroduce yourself to someone after coming back from the washroom? Is this a custom in Hong Kong?

So the staff didn’t allow media to take pictures but did nothing to stop fans from taking fancams and giving 4Minute presents?

The media wasn’t allowed to take pictures? Who are all the people in front of the ropes with professional equipment then?

Hong Kong media has always been known to sensationalize and blow stories out of proportion just for attention. 4minute seems to be just another victim of a rapidly rising bias toward taking down powerful female groups. (See T-ara, Girls' Day, etc.)



as someone who's seen 4minute at KPOP Masters, United Cube in London and the MBC Concert in London a few months ago... these girls are nothing but humble and sweet. korean agencies are known to have many restrictions when going overseas but never at events (usually outside of events) and its most definitely not up to 4minute to make those rules...

Sometimes countries like Taiwan, HK, China like to ask really nosy information for the sake of it. I can only remember when WG was on a show in Taiwan and one of the hosts sort of asked them if they were virgins or something of that sort.

i heard they were rude at kpop masters to staff of a kpop news site. I don't really know how big the news site is but I think they're up there since they get interviews w/ artists and stuff so they're pretty credible. They also don't seem like ppl who just hate 4minute because despite the fact that 4minute was rude to them they still promoted Troublemaker which came around pretty soon after that w/o any mean remarks and whatnot.

Yeah. I was going to add that to my comment, but I wanted to keep it firsthand.

There were some fans who claimed that 4Minute rolled their eyes at them, after they signed for them (so that made no sense to me). They were told this by a fanboy, who said they rolled their eyes as they walked away. They believed it. Any time I heard anything about 4Minute, it was some version of that story. Other than Hyuna, I never saw them around myself. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I hung around the MGM during KPM too, and witnessed Hyuna invite a girl into the elevator with her (and her manager), while the few other girls were distracted by Hyunseung. That girl had been hanging around with an autograph book all day, too scared to ask, so I know that made her experience. IDK That's always in the back of my mind when Hyuna is brought up. Otherwise, I'm not familiar with her. I was there for SHINee only, and had to be told who most of the Cube artists were. I couldn't tell 4Minute apart from stylists. ^_-

Years ago, when I heard news of a girl group or boy group with bad matters, I was always disappointed in them. But now, I realize that there are other factors that people don't consider. Maybe it's because I've started a new job and the customers are difficult to deal with, but sometimes, as a human, we are not always in the best mood. So maybe the girls were having an off day. There have been many accounts where the girls have been nothing but nice to their fans, staff, etc. I would let this slide. Sure, if it is true, it's unprofessional but you can't expect them to be perfect. Like I said, it's human. If it were an everyday thing, that would be another story.

I think a lot of the time, people don't really care to think twice about throwaway articles like this, especially since people are perfectly okay with treating entertainers as 'less than human'. Idols are even worse, since they are supposed to be 'perfect examples.' Combined with how bad behavior and a lack of respect is such a huge thing, especially in Asian culture, I just have no idea how these idols do not explode most of the time.

Even on their best behavior, they are still the victim of narrowminded thinking and vicious media and netizens. I think we need a little more empathy in this world.

Not saying that 4minute are generally just mean and rude people and they could even have had an off day, but Chinese media (in Hong Kong at least) don't usually just criticize entertainers for no reason. Maybe a lot of this was sensationalized, but I wouldn't be surprised that they offended some reporters enough to have one of them writing this article and making some stuff along the way. I mean, you don't hear other girl groups being criticized all the time in the Chinese media

i think there was probably some issues that the MC and other ppl weren't too happy about but it probably wasn't the group's entire fault. if anything these ppl need to take it up with their management

I've seen 4minute 3 times and each time they were lovely and kind to the fans so I don't really know what to believe. They're also a lot more animated with their performing now. At the Olympic Welcoming Back concert they were clearly adorable too.
