If you didn’t know who Jung Eun Ji was, or that this girl is a member of the idol group A Pink, you could take her to be a very skilled rookie actress.

From her sorrowful sobs to her antics as a crazy fan of H.O.T., every act she puts on makes her seem like an actress who’s received a lot of training.

Jung Eun Ji, however, is a first-time actor who has never been taught how to act, and yet she’s doing well with her role as Sung Si Won in tvN’s Reply 1997. Her teamwork with her partner, Seo In Guk, is also very good.

“I’ve never received proper acting classes. I only attended one class before I auditioned for Reply 1997 because I told my agency I wanted to take lessons. I’m originally from Busan, so my dialect helped, and my real personality is similar to Si Won’s. That’s why it was more comfortable for me to act.”

Now, the drama’s making issues here and there and is fairly popular, but before it started up, Jung Eun Ji said she had been worried out of her wits. She was especially worried that she would be criticized for her acting.

When she found that she was being praised, however, Jung Eun Ji said, “I’m so thankful. I didn’t expect the reactions to be like this.”

Jung Eun Ji’s role Sung Si Won is a high school student in 1997 who’s crazy for H.O.T. Jung Eun Ji herself is the member of an idol group, which made it more interesting to see her act as a fan.

“It was actually hard for me to relate to the crazy fan acts because I’ve never loved an idol like that. [There’s a scene in which] Si Won climbs over a wall surrounding H.O.T.’s home, opens their front door and says, ‘Oppa, I’m from Busan,’ but the H.O.T. oppas say ‘I’m from America’ and close the door on her. Si Won, however, blames herself, saying that she ‘made the oppas more tired.’ I wasn’t able to understand such scenes, but now that I’ve stepped closer to Si Won’s feelings I can now understand.”

In the process of understanding Si Won, Jung Eun Ji is also slowly starting to understand her fans more.

“I still don’t have fans like Si Won. One fan, though, once saw me and started crying. I wondered why the fan had cried, but after acting as Si Won I started to learn that fans could feel that way. I’ve started to watch my fans more closely, and I’ve started to understand them, too.”

Jung Eun Ji was also worried that her idol fan role would make it seem as if she was making fun of fans.

“I thought a lot about how I should make [Si Won] lovable. I kept an eye on our fans. Thankfully, she didn’t turn out to be an obnoxious character. My fans liked her, too. I believe they think I’ve started to understand how they feel.”

Because her first act was successful, Jung Eun Ji has fallen for the charms of acting.

“Acting is so much fun. I feel great that I’ve taken a successful first step. I still think, though, that I need to study more acting. For this piece my dialect was a strength, but if I want to continue acting I need to fix it.”

When told she was a successful idol actor that followed in the footsteps of Im Si Wan and Suzy with her first piece, Jung Eun Ji shook her head and said that was a huge bit of praise for her.

“Nineties retro is the trend these days, and I was lucky because I have a dialect. I should work harder. I’m just thankful that you thought set my name alongside big issue-making seniors such as Im Si Wan and Suzy.”

Can we talk about how flawless this drama is (so far)?! Jung Eunji for all the rookie actress awards! ヾ(@^▽^@)ノ

This is turning out to be one of my favorite k-dramas! The cast is great, it's very well written, it has a good balance between drama and comedy and it brings up a lot of important issues.
I was feeling really tired of the dumb love triangle/evil antagonist cliche in Korean dramas, but watching this and Shut Up Flower Boy Band made me still believe the industry can offer us good things!

I'm only four episodes in, but this drama is flawless so far, and Eunji is fantastic. She's very natural in the role, and she isn't afraid to let her character be ridiculous. And yet she remains really lovable. Ordinarily watching a teenager throw a temper tantrum would annoy me, but for some reason each time Eunji's character does it, I like her more. She's wonderful.

And I think I'm going to have to get into APink because of her.

Anyone who isn't watching this drama, should be. Idol actors are hit and miss a lot of times, but Eunji, and Hoya, are doing well in their roles. The other cast is great as well, they definitely complete the drama for me.

At first I was unsure how Hoya would do but he keeps nailing it.

I am loving this drama (to think that I was watching it just for Hoya) and I really, really like her in her role. I would have thought I'd hate a character like hers, but she makes her really lovable despite all her tantrums and antics. I love her character, tbh, tho every time I read it as "Siwon" I keep thinking of SJ's Siwon, lol.

And ugh, everybody should watch this drama. Like, yesterday. Glad it's finally being subbed because I was watching it anyway XDDD

A post about this show I am pleased. Now onto my question for fellow watchers. Am I the only one:

who doesn't want Yun-jae to end up being Si Won's husband? that would just seems so boring and such a generic ending.

also would love to see joon-hee actually get a guy. would like him to have a happy ending.

also it drives me nuts on tumblr when people refer to the characters with the actor's names. confuses me so much.

I hope I've learned to use this "spoiler" thing LJ has...

No, you are not! I really don't want them together, either. I don't really like those first love-only love things they usually pull off (kinda hated it even in Harry Potter). I am also rooting for another couple (I've only watched till ep 4, so, please don't spoil me if you're ahead of me?) which is Tae-woong/Si Won.

I would LOVE it if Joon-hee got a guy. Please, let that happen.

And lol, I am guilty of that, but just in the first episodes. It still takes me a while to remember Korean names sometimes.

He's just been cast in a new drama, so I think he'll definitely be busy acting for a while now. He's a rising star and getting lots of attention, mainly due to Reply 1997. :)

I was going to skip this drama because what do I know about 90s Korean pop culture? So many references passing right over me. @_@ But it's just so funny and heartfelt, I cannot resist. I want to hug this entire precious cast.

I was AMAZED by how much 90s Korean pop culture I know...I'm still trying to figure out WHY I know it too. My earliest kpop group was Shinhwa but that was only in passing since I was still in my jpop/jrock phase in the late 90s

I like her. More than half of the main cast are idols (idk about Seo In Guk), who have had little to no experience acting, but they're good, obviously not Kim Soo Hyun level but maybe better than decent. Part of it is their roles and the writing, but they adopt their personalities well.

I LOVE THIS SHOW <3 It's adorable.

I only watched this drama cause of Hoya but I didn't expect to love it this much. It's seriously so good and addicting. I love that mood/atmosphere that it has because it really feels like they're living in 1997, the writers have done a great job at that from the smallest details (tamagotchis) to the bigger ones. it has been very consistent.

The acting is also good from everyone but especially from Eun Ji and Seo In Gook, who doesn't have much acting experience either, and Hoya was really quiet in the beginning but his role is getting bigger and his acting doesn't feel forced to me like with other idols.

I was so confused with the half an hour eps format so I thought 7&8 were going to be the last episodes but I'm so happy that there's 10 more eps to go!! 8D though that just means the love square(?) is gonna get even more confusing and it's gonna be harder to figure out who's the couple that's getting married in the present but whatever I just love this story too much. & I don't want Hoya bb to end up heartbroken /: but srry i think Eun Ji and Seo in gook will and should end together, they're the cutest! ;3; hoya bb we'll find someone else for u!!
