A recent program on Korean television discussed the problem of buying back mp3s in the music industry, as well as the technique that companies use to boost their artists' chances of scoring #1s through this method.

An industry insider was interviewed by SBS, and explained how to buy back without worrying about being found it. He said that it's quite common to do so these days and that reaching #1 by doing so is very much possible. Not to be too obvious, it's done gradually to avoid attracting attention. "It's possible for rookies to get up to 50 ranks if done correctly," he continued. For the next release it's ideal to buy back enough to allow them to jump 30 ranks on the chart. He said that among the groups who achieved #1 , there are some that are buying back.

He also gave some tell-tale signs of an artist who has been buying back their songs to reach #1.

Netizens who saw the show applied the information given by the insider to various artists, including Sistar, finding some startling results.

The insider said that buying back began in February 2010, and Sistar debuted just a few months later. Sistar followed the method he discussed in slowly buying back songs with "Push, Push" and later ramped up the volume of purchases with "How Dare You" which hit #1.

However, some say that Sistar was unskilled in their buybacks, particularly slipping up with "Alone." It drew attention and suspicion because it hit #1 on Melon without moving at all on the real-time ranking, from day to night without falling at all, a historical first that even mega-hits like IU's "Good Day" or "You & I".

*Alone being #1 on Melon charts everyday and night without any interruption or change. This was a first in the history of Melon, Korea's largest and most-used downloading service, and drew a lot of attention and suspicion. Even super idols with mega-hits like IU with "Good Day" never did that.

They also were always coming as the first result in most searched songs for nearly a month. And ever since Sistar's distributor became Loen, they always stay as the recommended tracks for 2 days, something rare for more artists. Netizens also pointed to Sistar's producer for most of their hits, Brave Brothers, who has repeatedly come under fire for manipulating the charts with his artist, as being evidence for buybacks.

wow... i guess the korean netizens were right. it's crazy how perfectly planned out it was but it did seem like they shot up out of nowhere. i was really surprised that they were beating busker busker and t-ara on the charts and the fact that their videos keep getting 18 million views is a bit fishy.

I'm more curious as to why a video with so many views has so few comments... So cool only has around 15,000 comments while electric shock, similar in view count, is in the 80,000s

Buying back tracks isn't easy at all, I don't buy the shady tracks tbh, maybe physical singles and inflating views but buying back MP3, lol if you could do that ELF would be on it.

"entire career" is taking it a bit far, i think.
a lot of things in the entertainment industry should be taken with a grain of salt.
whether this is true nor not, nothing denies the fact that "alone" is my jam.

dude, i'm the last one to defend sistar, but i don't think their success came out of nowhere or is completely bought, they had a strong debut and have been really steadily growing over the years, they were everywhere and did a lot, while i think some fans make their success a bigger deal than it really is [some ppl charting them in the same place as t-ara, wg and kara in popularity] they are rising in their girl group ranking. while i wouldn’t doubt that brave brothers bought his music back because he does that a lot, sistar's singles seem to be pretty popular, so idk.

wow... it's so surprising to see that NOTHING about their career is real :( i mean, i didn't like their music but i at least respected them as hardworking idols who fought their way to the top. but this just makes me so disappointed in them and in their company.

it really does feel like lately they're everywhere and out of nowhere too like when did they even get this popular? its shady as fuck and none of this surprises me. especially since they worked with brave brothers for so long who are experts in shady shit like this

also, alone was a terrible song, its hard to believe it was #1 for that long without some manipulation of some sort.

Being number one on charts and winning shows won't make you popular if no one likes or remembers your song. SISTAR would have sunk into obscurity if they hadn't been a fundamentally good, talented group.

This doesn't mean NOTHING is real. All the buybacks in the world won't win endorsements for a group that doesn't have anything going for them. Im sure these methods helped boost and hasten their rise to popularity, but it is undeniable that a good portion of their fame rests on them as a group- talent, performances, music, and that x-factor of flavor that every successful group has.

I don't think their entire career is fabricated but things did get strange recently. Their fanbase is not strong enough to fend off all the heavy hitters that they have been beating.
