A recent report about professional brokers manipulating music chart rankings is stirring up much controversy.

The issue surrounding the method of ‘album hoarding’, used by middlemen to fabricate music charts rankings, was investigated on the most recent episode of SBS‘ ‘One Night of TV Entertainment‘.

One broker revealed, “This has been done many times. There is no risk, and the business is located in China.” He continued, “It can raise an album’s position on music charts. If that is the goal then the cost will begin at around 100,000,000 KRW (~$87,000 USD), which is why only big companies do this. Even reaching the  first place spot is possible. If you want to snatch the #1 spot as soon as the song/album is released, you’re looking to invest an amount that exceeds $87,000. However, it must be done subtly or you will get caught.

The middlemen create fake IDs to buy the albums in bulk, which in turn raises the albums’ ranks on music charts. In the case of new artists, they slowly increase their rank from 50th, 30th, 20th, and eventually to 1st over a long-term period as it’s a process that is carefully thought out.

Another specialist revealed that he helped an anonymous girl group get to the #1 spot on SBS‘ ‘Inkigayo‘ by using this method. He expressed, “It costs around 150 million Won ($130,000 USD) to get a group to retain a position around 7th through 15th place for a month,” while also revealing that since entertainment agencies can collect funding to pay the brokers through the album sales, they use this approach.

Notably, another professional middleman revealed that even real-time search keyword fabrication was possible. The broker stated, “Raising the position of a real-time keyword is expensive. It’s around [$4,300 USD] per hour. For peak time periods, it is around [$7,000 USD] per hour.

However, in response to the situation, one music site representative spoke up saying, “This is impossible. The website has a name authorization system, a purchase limit for each ID, and even an expenditure limit. Buyers are also constrained from buying the same album with the same ID. I’m curious as to how this can be possible.

i dont understand why the big companies have do it if theyre...well big? and realtime search rankings are stupid as fuck, just as stupid as realtime chart rankings it's like...so what? so and so's album went to #1 at 1am but dropped back to #nugu the next minute. Korea needs to take a chillpill with this ranking shit, everyone can do it so i don't see how this is a valid marker of popularity especially since it can be bought.

Big Company do that so they can make more money...

it cost a lot for them but when their group is on top, that group can get more fans and if they have more fans, they sell more album and half of the them when a new fan show up in a fanclub, they doesn't just buy one album but everything they can found... more money spend, more money for the company,..

I think it's more for sponsors appeal than to gain new fans. It's to make them seemed popular so company would go after them to endors products.

Well not for that but Brave Girls was mentioned on the program. They also showed Teen Top during the program. Basically Brave Brothers is suspect. Which is already pretty much well known if you follow sales in kpop.

More discussion about it over here..

Well, from what I've put together over time, they don't sell albums to make money as much as they sell albums to attract advertisers (who are probably going to take whoever's on top because sales = fame = more people buying their stuff) and then make most of their money from the contracts so . . . not surprised at all.

r ppl really suprised anyway

inki has been called pd-gayo for some time now cause they refuse to reveal their scoring system and its murky as fuq and there have been rumors going around that the pd just picks whoever he likes to win

That's probably why they got rid of the awards on Inkigayo like 2 weeks ago. I wonder if they got tipped off that someone would reveal buying the ranking spot.

Now that I scrolled back up, they probably did get a tip since it was a SBS show that revealed it.

Even if the system is right and proper, the fact that fan clubs bulk buy makes these rankings meaningless. They should just start counting fan club sizes.

I can see SM buying f(x)'s album. Their daum fan cafe ain't that big and they aren't that popular outside Korea either. Also if you wonder why these buyers need IDs for buying albums, it's because Hanteo is suspicious what comes to large amounts of albums bought by a single person (for instance there are several occasions when bulk buys by some fandom only charted after fans contacted Hanteo directly).

But it might have been JYP for WG too as maybe their real album sales were even more abysmal than what seemed.

lbr if jyp was going to buy any album sales at all for wg, then they'd have made sure that wg got first place as long as they were promoting, instead of having them consistently losing out to their juniors towards the end.

wg doesn't have much of a huge, rabidly active fanbase anymore, but they've still got some general casual interest from the population at large. imo their album sales are plausible.

To anyone wondering what's the point in spending all that money. Real time searches and getting No 1's gives an air of popularity which attracts advertisers. In the end that's one of the most important things to agencies since Idols don't make that much money from Music sales unless you're one of the top selling groups like 4minute.
