A cafe within an internet portal site has come under fire for buying and selling the cell phone numbers, social security numbers, and Kakao Talk IDs of idols such as TVXQ, JYJ, and SHINee. In addition, buyers were even able to attain the phone numbers of the artists’ managers or close acquaintances through the website.

Exact prices were not specified, but it is said that the price of each piece of information differed greatly depending on the idol group.

As controversy over the site began to grow, access to the cafe was finally blocked.

Netizens who came across the shocking news stated, “It’s a pity their personal information is leaked just because they are celebrities. Although they are public figures, I think we should protect their privacy”, “Buying another copy of their album would be much more helpful to the artist than buying their social security number”, and “That’s crossing the line of fandom and approaching criminal offense. I hope they realize that sometimes less is more and that their actions can actually be a disservice to the idols they admire”.

glad there is some sort of crackdown on sasaeng activity..

I wouldn't even call this a crackdown. More like a flashlight was turned on and the roaches scattered. No one got arrested, and since it was the internet, the information is definitely still out there. They'll form up again somewhere else. :/

does this shit happen as frequently in other countries? i'm talking about the extent of the sasaeng stalking, invasive personal info leaks, etc.

From: [identity profile] goshipgurl.livejournal.com
i think korea is the only country where saesangs can do all these things because they know the chances of getting caught and facing severe penalty is low. in other countries (USA, germany, etc)there are laws against stalkers, plus if they would do stuff like this (leaking personal info etc) they could (in most cases) easily track it back to the person so he/she will have to go to jail/pay a large sum of money/idk.

How do they crack ssn - is it that easy to figure out someone else's identification number in Korea?

I mean, I would assume that only government agencies would have access to that kind of info.

They could've paid someone in the gov't to give them access to those SSNs. :\

Seriously.....sasaengs...I can't even handle reading about their bullshit anymore. These people are sick and there needs to be some serious legal crackdowns for the stunts they pull.

That’s crossing the line of fandom and approaching criminal offense.

Approaching?!? Omg, if this fuckery is only APPROACHING criminal activity, I wonder what these netizens would qualify as ACTUAL criminal activity... smh.

Whenever the Korean government decides to grow a pair and declare these actions as serious crimes with serious consequences and jail time. That's probably when they'll finally consider this behavior as criminal activity.

The stealing and usage of someone else's SSN number should be a major government offense.

wtf, people seriously do anything for money, huh. don't they have anything that resembles a conscience in the least?

tbh i was really uncomfortable during that episode in which kyuhyun called changmin on the phone, and changmin sounded frustrated/angry at the start because he didn't recognize the number at first. plus the sasaeng's recording of yoochun over the phone... he just sounded seriously tired of the bullshit they pull. sigh, it's fucking traumatizing. the dbsk boys never get to catch a break, honestly. it's sad. :(

That is horrible, how can they just sell their personal information like that?? It gets me really really annoyed when I hear things like this -.- At least that is one thing done to stop sasaengs but who knows how many more of those cafes are out there

So much wrong in the situation. No wonder all these idols keep changing their phone numbers so much, sometimes their own fellow group members can't keep track.

I remember the story where dbsk and jyj member say that they use their relative ssn to buy phone cause it will be a little bit harder to trace :/

I watch soo many video of them saying how far these sasaeng violated their privacy. Talking about how they want to registered on some site just to find out that someone has used their SSN and they can't enter it. Sad thing is, the MC (or older people of the show), just laugh at it or mesmerized by their 'popularity'

Access was blocked, that's it? WTF.

How about they send the police to interview the people who were running the cafe and the ones who were selling the info. Find out where the leaks happened.

Every database has a log of who accessed a record with a timestamp and an IP address and in some cases a physical location, like a specific terminal or PC in an office.
Fire those employees who leaked the info and make sure to invite the press when you do it.
