SBS‘s 'Inkigayo' has decided to abolish its rank and award system.

Beginning on July 15th, ‘Inkigayo’ will be removing its Take 7, where the seven of the most popular artists from that week are featured, and the Mutizen Song award.

A producer of the show explained to Newsen through a phone call stating, “We believe that rather than the ranking system, the most important thing is the genre K-Pop being recognized worldwide. Therefore, we have decided to abolish the system after much discussion. There’s really no meaning behind a ranking system. We have decided to undergo this change in hopes that viewers can just enjoy the music.

There are a lot of K-Pop stars in the music industry that have talent. We wanted to break free from the repetitive system, in which artists release new songs and perform, so we plan on redesiging our system by having the concept of more special stages . For viewers to enjoy the music, we will have more collaboration stages and much more.”

With ‘Inkigayo’ following MBC‘s ‘Music Core‘ of becoming an awardless program, KBS‘s ‘Music Bank‘ remains as the only music program from the three major broadcasting stations with the awarding system.

i really like the idea of more special stages and collabs. as much as i love seeing my favorites, it does get tiresome hearing the same song over and over again for weeks.

wtf??? no. I get that they want fans to be more focused on Kpopand the stages but then wtf, how are artists gonna get acknowledged for their efforts and hard work?? Yeah they have their sales and there's other programs that give awards but I think they can still follow through with the concept of more special stages and still keep the ranking system.

Date: 2012-07-10 07:31 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] edanz-castle.livejournal.com
umm don't they have award shows like the grammy's or something? And if they want to get more acknowledged shouldn't they let their album and digital sales do the talking? If they did well, the album sales should show it.

That means Music Bank is going to be a very intense competition - less chances to win, more groups vying for that #1 spot. Either it makes being #1 more meaningful (I mean, collecting all those trophies...doesn't it lose meaning after a while?) or things are going to get ugly. Hopefully I'm just being overly pessimistic here, but with the kpop fandoms, you never know. On the bright side, looking forward to special stages and collaborations! The routine performances are getting kind of boring anyway :)

Damn it, I wanted to see SuJu, T-ara and 2NE1 battle it out on Sunday. Couldn't you have waited a bit longer SBS?!

Well I'm all for special stages. Maybe this way groups will perform more songs from their albums...

these awards only mean something to new artists anyway
i'm sure after a while big groups with a lot of trophies don't even care anymore

On one hand, I agree it would be nice to just focus on the music. On the other hand, as a fan, this frustrates me because it will be harder (if not impossible should the last show decide to stop giving awards) for artists to get recognized. Only award shows would be left, and we already know that's a slim shot for most new groups.

Also if rankings are taken away, i wonder what new stipulation entertainment companies would give their rookies before they could get better dorms/treatment. Will some new system arise?

Nah, its hard for U-KISS to get #1 esp when the focus is on digital sales. Unless they start getting popular with Korean public, they can basically say goodbye to the #1 spot. :((

I like the idea actually -- more collaboration stages and hopefully the chance for groups to promote other than their title songs. :D

I doubt it's gonna happen for Ukiss. Add in B1a4, Boyfriend, EXO, BAP, Nuest etc rookies with rising populairty, sadly Ukiss will be left behind. Even ZE:A has one super popular person, Ukiss doesn't really have that.

I guess this is good news for artists that don't go to many music shows, but those who do, for them all this will be hell as they now have to find time to prepare something special. Anyhow, YG artists will rejoice, while SM artists will cry in despair. Also this is not necessarily good news for artists that are less established as winning gets you positive publicity and elevates you in the eye of the public (I'm sure that for instance Sistar's position in the industry benefited greatly from winning with Alone compared to situation where no awards would have been given). Also SME and some agencies of boy groups must be kinda sad now as fans of their artists will have less incentive to bulk buy their albums.

ETA: Anyone know if Korean ELF are devastated as they are so obsessed with awards?

lol one award not being there will never stop strong fanbases from buying albums.

i do disagree with your idea that it isn't good news for artists that are less established. IF they do go with special stages and collabs, it would be a great vehicle to showcase talents within groups. whether it is the group which gets lost due to the more popular groups OR individuals who get lost within the group because certain members are usually hyped/highlighted.

this whole thing could provide to be rather entertaining AND bring in a bigger audience from old to new.

i can live without choreography, especially if it's going to be tacky and distracting. if they must, their agencies must cut down on their schedules. performing the same song for 8 weeks is dull for those who regularly watch these programs or follow them regularly online.

Can somebody explain to me why wins on other programs don't seem to matter as much? Nobody has mentioned that anyone can still win on M! Countdown or one of those new music shows that came from the random influx of them not too long ago. Mnet might not be considered one of the "three major broadcasting stations", but is it really that insignificant? Sorry if I sound silly, but I really don't know. I'm a little curious.

Nonetheless, I hope SBS follows through with this "more special stages" idea. I'd love to see a different show every week.

Date: 2012-07-10 06:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] deeinanutshell.livejournal.com
A lot of the other programs shut down from low viewership. M!Countdown still matters but imo Inkigayo had a better ranking system (because digital sales mattered more). Mnet is a cable channel ifrc so they matter less because they have lower viewership compared to mbc, sbs, and kbs.
