In a recent interview, CL expressed her feelings on why K-Pop artists have popularity overseas:
Man, the worst is when people who thrive due to sheer hype start to buy into their own hype and believe the shit that’s being spewed.Why do you think foreigners like 2NE1 & Kpop?
“The passion for music that Korea has cannot be easily found anywhere else. As compared to singers in Japan and USA, our (Korean) singers are more passionate. 2NE1 has been mixing eastern and western genres of music. The trot melody (that I Love You has) is one of those efforts.” (CL)

“한국만큼 음악에 열정을 쏟는 나라는 없다. 미국이나 일본보다 우리 가수들이 훨씬 열정적이다. 2NE1은 동양과 서양 음악 장르를 혼합해왔다. 서양문화를 좋아하면서도 한국 문화를 넣으려고 애쓴다. 트로트 멜로디도 그런 노력의 하나다.”(씨엘)
("I think there isn't a country that puts in as much passion into their music as Korea. Some of our singers are far more passionate than some of the singers in the US or Japan, and I think foreign fans like 2NE1 because we're always trying to find a balance between music from the east and the west. For those of you who don't really read Korean, the whole interview has been paraphrased, and the sentence endings(이다) are not natural of normal speech.
