A fourth grader in Gangwon Province is believed to have killed herself on Tuesday morning, leaving a letter that read, 'Life is too tough.'

The police said the 10-year-old was found dead by her mother in the garden of their apartment building where they lived on the 11th floor.

'After I received a call from her teacher that she did not come to school, I scolded her on the phone since it was a test day. She did not answer the phone when I called her again. I felt strange and went home to find her,' the 37-year-old mother, whose name was withheld, told the police.

A family photo was placed on the terrace of the family apartment with the letter in which she said, 'I am sorry. I am doing this because life is too tough,' according to police.

The student reportedly gave her belongings to her friends and left eight of them a letter.

In the investigation, it was discovered that the girl had searched on the Internet for painless ways to die.

The report said her relationship with her schoolmates was good and that she also did well in school.

Her mother was working a night shift the day before the girl's death and her father had been away from home for work. The girl was left alone after her older sister went to school in the morning.

'Considering she left long letters to her family and friends, we think that she had prepared for the suicide beforehand,' the police said. The police will investigate further to ascertain what led to her death.

Meanwhile, a 15-year old student is believed to have jumped from the eighth floor of an apartment on Tuesday morning in Incheon, west of Seoul.

He was taken to hospital but is in serious condition.

Student suicide has become a major social issue recently. In December, a middle school student was found dead in an apparent suicide after months of bullying by two schoolmates.

A teacher was indicted without detention on charges of discarding official survey documents about school violence and playing down the seriousness of the results.

The bullies were sentenced to three years in jail and two and a half years respectively last month.

Data from 2010 issued by Statistics Korea shows that the number of Korean teenagers who took their lives that year was 353. Suicide was the biggest cause of death among teens.

According to 2011 government data, the main reason for teen suicide was thought to be family problems followed by depression and school grades.

Korea had the highest suicide rate in 2010 among member nations of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

RIP. :( It's always upsetting to have news like this, but this is more saddening because it's children doing things that are so avoidable. Children should not be feeling that way.

My childhood was full of sunshine and rainbows.

oh my god, no. r.i.p. :(

i hope the other student will pull through, and undergo serious counseling. ten, fifteen, too young to go. :(

this reminds me of a few days ago when i was in the lecture theatre and we had to shout out our suggestions for research essay topics, and someone behind me was muttering, "korea and their fucking education". for real.

I went through teenage depression. It started when I was 14, I got better at 15, then recovered completely at 16. It may sound really shallow for a kid with no real responsibilities to be that sad, but I had an unlucky mix of being in a hostile environment and poor genetics. I kind of understand why this is so rampant in South Korea. I'm guessing one of the reasons (just one, I'm no expert) is that these kids really don't have anywhere and anyone else to turn to. I don't know if it's because discussing emotional issues is taboo, or the general public is passive.

I come from a dysfunctional family, and while they might have aggravated my condition then, they were also the ones who helped me overcome it. I'm blessed. I'm 22 years old and totally over it now. Quite amusing to note that I come from a country that's very well known for its trait of happiness. Again, I'm blessed.

I usually keep mum about it to strangers, but I like sharing my story, just in case anyone out there is going through some rough times.

trigger warning for self harm

I read once years ago that until people know this concept, "suicide", few will come to this conclusion on their own. I don't think I knew what suicide was as a ten year old, but at fifteen when I learned about self harm… As great as it is that awareness is being raised, I also wonder if it is the trigger for some. What's the answer then? I have not researched this topic enough to say.

(also a trigger warning for self harm)

tbh I always thought cutting was stupid until i was hospitalized when i was 12 for trying to kill myself, and i saw everyone else doing it and i thought it was normal so i did it a lot in high school and the sad thing is, i saw one of those girls from the hospital 5 years later and even though i thought her cuts were the deepest at the time--she didn't have any scars left and now that i'm an adult i realize how stupid i was because i have permanent scars up and down my arms. if i had never been exposed to that kind of environment i never would've picked it up, so idk i kinda agree with you...it was a trigger for me.

this is so sad ;___; it's sad because sometimes they leave no hints of depression at all, making it hard for people around them to provide help. and to think that this is happening to a 10 year old... oh my.

10 years old should never have so much burden. And I think the mother must be devastated by now, coz her last word to her precious daughter was anger. May the girl rest in peace and the families she left behind have some consolation soon or later.

at 10 years old, a child should be playing and laughing with friends. they should actually live as a child.
