Director Kim Ki-duk's "Pieta" to be released at the end of August

Director Kim Ki-duk who has taken over 3 worldwide film festivals is releasing his eighteenth movie "Pieta" at the end of August.

Kim enchanted the public with characters good and bad in the 2001 movie "Bad Guy" and now 11 years, he's back with a more brutal and cruel movie "Pieta".

"Pieta" which means 'have mercy', is about an evil man Kang-do (Lee Jeong-jin) who meets his mother (Jo Min-soo) one day and suffer confusion while the cruel secret is revealed.

Lee Jeong-jin as Kim Ki-duk's new "Bad Guy" persona, and actress Jo Min-soo who's come back as the 'black haired Maria' are attempting to put a change to their usual images.

The poster of the movie shows Lee Jeong-jin and Jo Min-so imitating the picture of Michael Angelo's Vatican Pieta.

This picture is actually of the Virgin Mary holding dead Jesus Christ but Jo and Lee might be metaphorizing the picture and the phrase, "The man and the woman who will never be forgiven" brings out the curiosity in fans.

He's art film festival favourite in Europe and really respected auteur. Funny thing is that South Koreans themselves don't care about his films as they show not so admirable sides of South Korean society. Anyhow, us European art film geeks love him and he can usually finance his films just by relying on European film festival and DVD sales.

I know of him, I've seen afew of his films like Spring, Summer...Spring again and Coast Guard but I just found the description exaggerated. I know he's not highly successful in Korea which is weird since they usually embrace Directors who are known outside of Korea.

Apparently they complain that he's airing SK's dirty laundry for the world and think he's a misogynist 'cause bad things happening for women in his films. Also jealous South Korean filming community doesn't like him 'cause he became a celebrated director without proper education in film as he only studied fine arts (concentrating on painting) in Paris before getting into screen-writing and directing.

The second point is so stupid, you don't have to study film, some of the greatest directors never did.

Talent is talent, of course some people need to study the art before they attempt but others have it, they don't need to imitate works and derive influences from it, they know what they want to show and do it. My respect of Kim Ki Duk has gone up now.

Ummm...cool movie poster? I can't say I'm a fan of anyone mentioned here, so that's all I got sorry. It really was just the movie poster that caught my attention. Btw, not blaming you for the typo or anything, it just caught my attention since I was immediately reminded of my old art history teacher talking at length about the original sculpture and my brain went 'hey, wait a sec...'

yes I understand.
Just that I wish we could often have discussion about cinema & korean dramas on omona, that's why I try to post as much news as possible about those. But when I see there is like 2 comments a and one of them isn't even about the topic then., it kind of gets on my nerve x).

Thanks! I'll check his films. I remember the Spring Summer.... movie was popular here in Hungary. It's interesting how different the films that get to the Eu market from ones the people watch in Korea or in Japan :d
