On Saturday 23rd June 2012, the MBC Korean Culture Festival took place at the indigO2 in London. The proceeds from the ticket sales went towards a charity for the British Korean War Veterans of the Korean War.
Fans from not only across the UK attended, but also fans travelled from France, Germany and Italy enjoyed the K-Pop fueled night. It was lovely to see everyone appreciate and show a lot of love for Korean folk songs, the stunning hanbok fashion show and K-music.
The headlining acts featured 4minute, Norazo and EXO K. Apart from these K-music acts, traditional korean folk musicians, dancers, fashion and a K-Pop dance cover group (Dae2Bak Movement) embraced the stage.

The festival kicked off with messages from various people on the screen, ‘Visit Korea’ promotional ads starring UEE and a montage of photos of Korea displayed with the instrumental of Arirang played in the background.
The traditional Korean drum band created a great opening to the festival with their amazing drum performance and dancing.

Soon after, 4minute teasers were up on the screen introducing us to each member. 4minute came on stage wearing matching outfits. Their concept of the evening was a grey patterned jacket, black top along with a two toned black and white chiffon maxi skirt which complemented their performance. The girls were impressive and sounded amazing live.
4minute gave a lot of fan service during the performance, they flashed their legs at any given opportunity, made heart signs, HyunA blew a kiss towards the audience and the group didn’t forget about the fans who were seated in the upstairs area.
The set list for 4minute was: Volume Up, Mirror Mirror, HUH and Hot Issue. After performing Volume Up, the members greeted the audience and introduced themselves one by one. Even though it was a short performance, it was sweet. They managed to hype up the audience throughout their whole set and asked the fans to sing along during the chorus of Hot Issue. Let’s hope 4minute will return to the UK again in the near future.

Once 4minute had finished their set, next up was traditional Korean dance and music. First on stage was soloist dancing to traditional music then the second act within the same genre was Queen. Queen are an extremely talented group of females where the musicians play traditional Korean instruments fused with modern music. This combination of genres brought a refreshing new twist to the traditional style. The instruments played were the violin, gayageum, haegeum and daegeum. Their concept and costumes for the night we simple, all the member wore white tops and layered purple, lilac and white puffed skirts.
Among their set list, Queen performed their rendition of the Mission Impossible theme tune, they incorporated their own choreography whilst playing the instruments, creating a fun and lovely stage. All the musicians in the group were fantastic, the violinist made playing the violin look effortless and her performance was flawless.
Samul Nori soon took over the stage once Queen had finished their performance. The word Samul Nori refers to the 4 percussion instruments being used to play traditional folk songs. The instruments used are called – Kkwaenggwari (a small gong), Jing (a large gong), Janggu (a drum) and Buk (a barrel drum). Each musician in SamulNori had their own solo moments displaying beautiful dance movements and their exceptional skills in playing their instruments.
The final act began with just the musician and her gayageum introducing the sounds of the popular traditional folk song Arirang. She was soon after joined by the talented vocalist, the rest of Queen, SamulNori and the first act dancing along. They all performed Arirang as their encore leaving the audience impressed and entertained.
Two members of 4minute, Hyuna and Gayoon appeared on stage as MCs to introduce Norazo. A teaser of Norazo showed up on screen introducing the members and they opened their set with Happy Song.
Norazo’s attire for their performance were football shirts which had ‘Norazo Korea’ printed on the front. Norazo got the crowd hyped up and going with their eccentric showcase of their songs, the dancing was brilliant and Lee Hyun’s vocals were on fire, he gave me goosebumps.
Jo Bin threw his sunglasses and football shirt into the crowd. One lucky fan managed to catch the football (signed by Norazo, 4minute & EXO K) Jo Bin kicked into the audience during one of the songs.

MCs HyunA and Gayoon returned on stage to introduce the next part of the festival, they were wearing colourful modern hanboks as a hint of what was to come. The hanboks they wore were designed by Park Sul Nyeo, and the fashion included 4minute as well.
Park Sul Nyeo’s hanbok fashion show featured various styles of hanboks. This included royal hanboks that the King, Queen, Crown Prince and Princess’ would wear as well as clothing of the officials. The royal hanboks that appeared first were modelled by three couples, each couple wore the same hanbok but in three different colours red, purple and white. All the hanboks had a traditional korean pattern embroidered and printed in gold.
Ceremonial hanboks worn for weddings were modelled and finally modern hanboks which kept a traditional look. Some of the modern hanboks had a summer theme, pastel colours (pink, yellow, coral) were present and a lighter material was used. Towards the end, the white hanboks modelled had korean art (tiger and dragon imagery) printed on the material.
The models were not only dressed in hanboks but were also dressed in traditional attire from head to toe. This included the men wearing long beards, wearing the kings crown and officials’ hats and belts also known as Gakdae. For the women, they wore hairpins which were made from beads and metal and baetssi, the makeup was kept simple with the exception of the ceremonial hanbok model who wore yeonji gonji. The footwear worn were beoseon and gomusin.
All the hanboks presented on the catwalk were exceptional and beautiful, it was hard to pick a favourite.

After the fashion show, Hyuna and Gayoon returned to the stage for the final time to introduce the last act of the evening, EXO K. Even before EXO K came on stage, fans were chanting for them to appear. Fan signs for EXO K appeared in the audience as their teaser video played on the screen and the majority of fans waved their green glowsticks in support as EXO K came on stage to perform their first song of the evening, History.
They greeted the audience and introduced themselves one by one just like the acts before them. They then gave a beautiful performance of Into Your World (Angel). The choreography in this song was the same as their teaser #23, it was great to watch it live and see it hadn’t gone to waste. The members didn’t have matching outfits, each one had their own but similar in style and colours. The guys then gave a mesmerizing performance of their debut song, MAMA as their encore. It was a great ending to the festival. EXO K’s set list for the festival was: History, Angel and MAMA.

Confetti was thrown in the air as all the festival’s acts returned to the stage as the festival ended. It was such an enjoyable event, I don’t think anyone wanted it to end.
Overall, the MBC Korean Culture Festival was amazing, fun and enjoyable. I hope all artists, musicians and acts return to the UK in the near future and hopefully, MBC will plan more culture events like this.

Way to make us look like nice people. British EXO fans that were there are bitching on tumblr about how 'tame' it was, but anyone can see that the situation was not tame.
And seriously? Calling Sehun 'Thehun' to his face? What the fuck?

There are a few of us that aren't like these ingnorant imbeciles (sadly, not everyone here thinks so) and it makes me SO mad the way they treated them and made claims of other intl fans as "jealous". The girl who filmed it was deluded as fuck if she didn't see anything wrong!
As KyungSoo puts it,

Date: 2012-06-27 08:25 am (UTC)Exo fan situation isn't as bad as people are making it out to be. I mean, from what i watched all the boys seemed really happy with the attention and it's wasn't like fan restricted their movements in any way. Most wouldn't follow them into shop and shiz.
