It may have to do with the fact that kids were being bullied for North Face jackets. The might have came up with this to do something positive. There was an article posted a few months ago about the links with the jackets and gang violence in S. Korea.

Apparently North Face is the must have brand...and it has led to kids fighting over the jackets. You are seen as a loser for having the cheapest North Face jacket but even that is apparently better than none

Like sneakers in the States back in the 90s.

I recently heard people steal North Face jackets in the States too though...
