SEOUL: Korean authorities have on Thursday charged a Seoul gang boss, identified only as Jang, with allegedly trying to extort "G.I. Joe" star Lee Byung-hun in collusion with one of Lee's former girlfriends, reported Korean media.
According to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, Lee's ex-girlfriend, a Korean-Canadian gymnast, had complained to Jang after Lee broke up with her, and the two eventually decided to work together to blackmail Lee in 2009.
Jang threatened to release photos of Lee together with his ex-girlfriend, along with a medical record that showed his ex-girlfriend has had an abortion - a move which would have seriously damaged Lee's showbiz career - unless Lee paid him.
Lee's ex-girlfriend had also accused him of sexual misconduct and illegal gambling in 2009.
At the time, the 42-year-old Lee insisted that he is innocent, but said it "might take a while" to resolve the issue, in a letter to his fans on his personal blog.
Lee is one of the most well-known stars in Korea today, and has appeared in hit Korean dramas like "Beautiful Days" and "Iris", along with films like "J.S.A.: Joint Security Area" as well as "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra".
