omonatheydid{2} Daehyun “In the most turbulent period of time in my life, all I had was singing”
[..] We have prepared the column “star story” in our publishing which not only tells a truthful side to stars, but their past that brought them to where they are today. This episode’s protagonist is B.A.P’s Daehyun, who has stepped forth into the music industry with his strong charisma as he’s in charge of “innocence” in the group.
And in putting aside his memories of Kwangju, Daehyun moved to Busan. However, he had a hard time adjusting to his school life in Kyungsang-do due to the rough speaking of his friends from the new area.
“At the time, there were rumors that if you used Jeonra-do saturi, you’d get hit and I entered my first day of school with a strong impression by dying my hair also. Seeing the Busan kids talk, I was a bit scared (laughs). At first, I had worries of if I’d fit in but after time passing by, my inner jokester side came out and I spent a fun time with my peers.”
And Daehyun who moved onto middle school began having dreams of becoming a singer. Despite how turbulent that period of time seemed, he claimed that his passion for singing and becoming a singer filled his heart wholly.
“I never sensed any difference in transitioning to middle school and adjusting to a new school life since most of my elementary school friends moved onto the same middle school as I did and when I entered middle school, I really feared nothing. Despite going to academies to focus on my studies, I also liked hanging out with my friends and playing around. I went to a karaoke for the first time in my second year of middle school and it was a fun place for me to enjoy since I liked singing (laughs).”
The karaoke place that he crossed during his puberty days helped his dreams of becoming a singer. He garnered attention before at a young age for his outstanding singing skills and he found the place to be charming where he can showcase his singing as well.
“I heard a few compliments saying that I was good at singing since I was in elementary school. I used to just admire singers perform inside my television when I was in elementary school but when I moved onto middle school, I think all I did was go to karaoke places. When I was bored, I’d just sit alone and sing (laughs). It wasn’t just karaoke places. I went to various places like parks or fields, wherever I could sing, I’d sing my heart out. And in my third year of middle school came puberty and I couldn’t sing for a while. Despite being at a young age, I did bottle my sufferings alone.”
Daehyun, who put singing as his everything, began worrying of his future during his third year of middle school and that was because of his parents.
“I suddenly began fearing if I was able to slack off this much in my third year of middle school and if this was a right thing to do when my parents were working hard. Even my peers around me were studying hard and in seeing that, I began growing nervous.”
{3} Daehyun “High school student Daehyun looks afar at a higher place”
[..] With Daehyun worrying over his future, he wanted to transfer into an arts high school in which he thought would unravel his dreams of becoming a singer, but he soon gave up, the reason being how expensive tuition was.
“I wanted to go to an arts high school, but tuition was pretty expensive. With the fear of how much burden it’d lay on my parents, I gave up and instead looked into a high school that had a music program and I ended up finding a place.”
Soon afterwards, Daehyun was able to obtain information about the school but came across obstacles, which was the cutline to acceptances in which he was a little below the cut for grades. And being driven by that, he began to pour his all into studying and felt the joy of victory when he was eventually accepted.
“In going through the hassle of being accepted into the school, it made me think of how I should really work harder. My teacher really liked me and people in my surroundings complimented me lots in saying that I was good at singing, so my teacher recommended me to sing in front of my seniors one day. I think after that stage, I heard more compliments on how good I was at singing (laughs).”
With the compliments Daehyun received, he really worked hard on singing and with his endless efficiency, his friends were the ones who approached him first. However, his puberty struck again, in which he thought he overcame in middle school, which resulted in another stage of rebellion.
“I faced puberty again and I was even disobedient to my parents’ word a lot, disregarding my studies because I was too busy having fun.”
However, his second time around of puberty didn’t last long because of his mother who believed him till the end. His mother accepted all of the whining and complaints of her son facing puberty, which drove Daehyun back to his roots of always having a strong sense of filial affection, ending his rebellious days.
“In my second year of high school, I began having an interest again in my future career and the opportunity came to me. I began practicing with peers who also dreamed of becoming vocalists at a youth center, and that’s how I officially began taking vocal practices.”
In this period of time, Daehyun learned both vocals and bboying. Although he never received prior official lessons, his singing skills already had a name for its self.
“Someone saw me practicing and asked if I was interested in joining a youth club, so it was a time where we uploaded practice videos on the internet. At the time, I was friends who did bboying so I learned dancing too.”
With one of his friends seeing the amount of effort he put in, he recommended if he’d like to go to an academy with him and that was how Daehyun enrolled in an academy beside the beach and since then, he began receiving official lessons.
“At the time, I had no knowledge of improving but I had the thought in mind that I can do well. With the mindset of working hard till death, I even cut off my cell phone plan to keep on practicing and stayed at the academy practicing till they closed. For about a year, I was crazy for singing and dancing.”
And this was the time when Daehyun met his teacher who will become his life mentor, stacking his skills slowly, one by one.
