BoA’s mother reveals BoA once lost 10kg in a week due to stress

On the May 9th episode of SBS‘ ‘One Night of TV Entertainment‘, BoA‘s mother revealed the hardships that her daughter endured when she was sent off to Japan at the tender age of 16.

BoA’s mother, Sung Young Ja, revealed, “I received a carnation from my daughter, and while we were eating, she said to me, ‘I’m always respecting you right? What special gift should I buy for you today?’”

Ever since a young age, BoA had to live away from her family to pursue her career in Japan. Sung Young Ja further revealed, “At the time, she was 16 years old. Due to the intense amount of stress she received, she was admitted into a hospital for one whole week. During that one week, she lost 22 pounds (10 kg) of her weight. I cried when I heard that.”

“Being away from her parents at a young age, I think the small and big hardships that she suffered during her stay in Japan would be many.”

Sung Young Ja commented on her daughter, “I’m always thankful for my daughter’s loving and considerate heart. We are a family that communicates by heart.”

It's really heart breaking, you can tell BoA has been through SO MUCH especially when she went to Japan on her own.
Honestly, back in the day when BoA first debuted in Japan I felt like she had the best most perfect life and I basically wanted to be BoA lol!

I don't think you can, calorie-wise. One KG is about 7500 calories you have to burn. So to lose 10 KG she would have to lose 75.000 calories. Thinking that - by not eating - a women burns about 1800 calories a day on her own, that would leave us with 62.400 calories she would have to burn doing other things, that is nearly impossible to achieve.

But I am not a doctor or anything, it might be possible.

I guess she wasn't entirely alone, because iirc she was living with Sooyoung and Sunday at the time, but moving somewhere foreign for work and not being able to see your family at the age of 16 must have been horrid.

As a longtime BoA stan, I'm glad that she seems really happy doing promotions in Korea now. I think a lot of noobs don't really understand that without her, the current state of k-pop would be impossible.

Honestly in her first years in Japan (Coz I only knew about her since her debut in Japan)...For the longest time I thought she was Japanese.
She worked her ass off, picked up the language really fast and conducted herself amazingly well there!!
I LOVED how she didn't half ass anything.

People forget, but bb!Hallyu was credited pretty much to her and BYJ's dramas. Actually, I also found out about her because of her Japanese activities. Most of Korea did, I think, because she kicked ass with No.1 (even if she was adorable with ID Peace B, lol no).

Kinda like how KARA weren't noticed in Korea only after they were a huge hit in Japan, THEN Korea started paying attention to them and including them in the ranks of the top girl groups in Korea.

Nah, Kara was noticed in Korea for Mister, that was huge. Though their success in Japan definitely sounded good on top of their already existing moderate level of fame and made them even more famous.

Groups like Choshinsung are very popular in Japan and Korea still dgaf about them, so you do need some foundation of fame in Korea before popularity in Japan will do anything for you.

I suppose a lot of it would be water weight, but even then, wouldn't about 5kg be the max that could disappear in a week?

In one week!?!? That is insane. BoA is truly incredible for having debuted at such a young age and in another country too! And she hasn't done anything stupid or irrational through her career (that the public knows of).

I wonder if this is separate from when her manager passed away in 2003. She lost a lot of weight that following week too, and her coordis had to have her performance outfits remade because they became too baggy. :(

Ugh, I can't imagine going through a third of what BoA has experienced from such a young age. Her grit and determination are really amazing.

I think she's exaggerating a bit...I don't think BoA, who is already quite thin to begin with, could lose than much weight in such a short time. Even water weight + not eating wouldn't cause her to lose that much. That's Biggest Loser style, man.

It is impossible to lose that much weight in one week. She would have to burn 75.000 calories to lose that, which is impossible in the time span of just seven days. Probably most of it is just water weight, which isn't necessarily bad to lose.
