Actor of the moment Kim Soo-hyun was named Best Actor of the Year on Thursday at the Paeksang Arts Awards, which took place at Olympic Hall in Jamsil, eastern Seoul.

But Kim wasn't all smiles after his win, which recognized his performance in the hit drama "The Moon Embracing the Sun."

"I'm so grateful for the award, but on the other hand, it feels like I've just been given a hefty amount of homework," he said. "I'll keep trying to become a better actor in order to remain worthy of this award."

Kim has only been active in the industry for five years, and contestants who lost to him include some of the most esteemed actors in Korea. Park Si-hoo from "Princess's Man," Shin Ha-gyun from "Brain" and Cha Seung-won from "The Greatest Love" were among the nominees. The fact that these actors lost to the 24-year-old newbie was a topic of much debate among entertainment industry insiders. Kim has skyrocketed to fame since his appearance in the hit drama, with companies here and abroad vying for his endorsement.

I didn't see his performance in The Moon and The Sun yet but I just wish Park Shi Hoo would have won lol.
Oh idk I didn't see Brain or The Greatest Love so can't judge...
But this is probably a popularity award, which is sad.

Love this kid, but even more than PSH and CSW - Han Suk kyu got robbed. He was freaking intense/brilliant as Sejong in Tree.
also KSH gets 0 points for that hair - it doesn't suit him at all

I havent watched Brain and The greatest love, but just comparing this boy's acting and Shi Hoo's, I have to say that Shi Hoo's was WAY better than Soo Hyun's, and, in comparison, Shi Hoo's character was much more demanding than Soo Hyun's, so among the two of them, Shi Hoo should have won this award.

On another note, OMGS, this boy is 24 years old?...... He looks SO young, I thought he was 16-18.....

Well, Song Joong Ki is 27. And Shim Changmin is 24, he's the same age as Shim Changmin.

I know Joong Ki's and Changmin's ages, but at least they kinda look their ages (even if they look a bit younger), but this boy really looks like a 16 years old teenager for me.

I really think that he is a very good actor and MoonSun showed that. I don't see often such an amazing approach to typical male lead character.

Not gonna lie that his performance in Moon & Sun is amazing but compared to the other actors who were also nominated for that award, his performance is pale compared to them.

Honestly, this is bullshit.. I don't care how much you love him, this was due to his popularity, nothing more or less. I'd be embarrassed if I were KSH.

Princess Man was 10x better than Moon/Sun. But even Park Shi Hoo was just good enough to match the rest of the cast, which I feel were all very good. But I don't think PSH was the outstanding member necessarily, even though he is my actor Bias and I love him.

Han Suk Gyu was also, good, though not necessarily awe inspiring.

I can understand him beating Cha Seung Won because that drama was not his best work.

Shin Ha Gyun should have won. His performance in Brain was breathtaking and just amazing. That drama wasn't as popular as some, but his performance was better than any other for the entire year, honestly. I am really disappointed he didn't get his due. I really recommend Brain. It's a very honest drama and it's not so straight forward as all the rest. There are still plot devices, but all in all it was different, honest, and a beautiful exploration. It's not as romance-y as some, but the romance is raw and frank and that is just great. This story is most about personal growth and overcoming hardship. Shin Ha Gyun played the best villainous lead ever. It just shook me to the core.

I'm a staunch suppourter of KSH since Will it Snow for Christmas but beating PSH and SHG wasn't legit. He won it all due to his popularity.

He was in WIll It Snow for Christmas? As the teen of the main lead? ( Just checked wiki). Didn't even noticed him when there is Joong Ki stealing whatever show he's in with whatever time he was given.

Joongki was so lame, learn how to swim

Yeah he was the young teen, I really like him in it though he's no Go Soo obviously.

He can't help it that the director told him to disappear after going into the water ~~~ But yeah, years later, many people who watched that show will forever remembered him and his scene instead of the main storyline lol.

You can tell his acting lacks in that role. But he got better and it shows in Moon/Sun.

He was in that Father/Son drama where he really impressed people, before Dream High. I think he's a great young actor but I just don't like to see people get awards when they're clearly not worthy.

ngl i didn't even remember that joongki was in the drama until i saw gifs of it on tumblr.

kim soohyun on the other hand, spurred me into a naver/daum frenzy and i've been a huge fan of him ever since.

Yeah? Well, I guess I talk to different people. Majority of people i talk to only remembered Joong Ki in it and they don't remember anything else of that drama. LOL

He won it all due to his popularity.
word.
I was hoping for PSH. >> KSH's acting in MoonSun was...blank. Maybe that was what his character was about?

Okay, I love him in Moon/Sun, and is looking forward to his upcoming projects, but... too soon. Really, I don't think it's that hard to play Lee Hwon in Moon/Sun if you give the role to a capable actor. Even more, with the cast surrounding him, his leading lady is a freaking wood. So of course he'll shine.

Yeah, anyone would look good acting next to Han Ga In, lol.
He certainly has potential, but he's not there yet.

THANK YOU!!!! Everyone keeps saying how great Han Ga In is but god she's so wooden in everything I've ever seen her in. That Witch Yoo Hee was just the worst.

Everyone has been saying how wooden her acting is all the time. I never found anyone who actually praise her acting abilities/skills. :O

I know a few people that praise her, not to mention she's really popular in Korea.

This. Han Ga In's lucky she's pretty and popular enough to still have projects but OMG girl can't act.

can't say it was politically correct but can't say kim soo-hyun didn't deserve, as a relatively new leading man he is really able to carry his weight as an actor/has a really god range/can really gut with his tears. tbh, my vote goes with park si shoo but i'm happy for ksh regardless

i watched moon/sun and i was not impressed by his acting at all. i actually thought he was a better actor in other roles tbh

the biggest upset is that he beat han seok-kyu in tree, which is just preposterous. shin ha-gyun was great in brain, cha seung-won worked with a relatively easy character in love, and park shi-hoo, honestly i don't like his acting at all but i would still say his character required him to do more than kim soo-hyun's in moon/sun did. so yes, if i were kim soo-hyun i'd feel really, really, REALLY sheepish about winning that award.

I thought Soo Hyun's performance in TMTETS is really good (not gonna deny that fact) but not enough to win him a Baeksang awards esp when Park Shi Hoo & Shin Ha Gyun in the nominees too. As biased as I am since I'm a super big Shi Hoo fan, he clearly deserve it more since his performance in The Princess Man is absolutely amazing & stunning -- when one can portray his emotion with his eyes, you know that he's an exceptional actor and Shi Hoo did just that in TPM.

I loved Moon that embraces the sun. His acting was pretty good.
At times it felt like the 'Adult' cast was out-acted by the 'teenage/child' cast though.
