U-KISS - Standing in the Confetti of Others

Idol group U-KISS will return on the 25th with their 6th mini-album 'DORADORA'. They are immediately welcomed. While spending six months in Japan, they have had several notable accomplishments. Their first Japanese album, 'A Shared Dream', and single 'Forbidden Love' have ranked 2nd and 5th on the Oricon charts respectively.

Also, U-KISS has held 11 concerts in a total of six cities across Japan, including Osaka, Fukuoka, Tokyo. In July, they will tour again in an additional nine cities. According to AVEX, U-KISS is scheduled to perform at Tokyo Dome next March.

Their popularity in Japan has sky-rocketed. Their manager proudly stated, "When U-KISS first entered the Japanese market last year, they didn't have any bodyguards, but now they have 3-4". From Tokyo to Harajuku to Shibuya, there isn't a place without "U-KISS pastry". They have also filmed three CFs.

Just as nervous as U-KISS, their manager passionately stated, "They're still considered as rookies (in Korea). We're proud that U-KISS has found amazing opportunities in Japan, although it's harder in Korea. Rather than saying our status has changed, I would say that they are very happy to be able to sincerely feel the support from their fans."





"Gritted our teeth with determination for four years"

There's a lot more to consider than just plain determination. It is because they must observe the Korean music industry much more closely than the Japanese industry.

U-KISS stated, "(We) Have reached a milestone in our four years of activities. Saying it's not a burden would be a lie," and "For this comeback we are absolutely determined to succeed. We've gritted our teeth to get ourselves on the right track".

U-KISS has debuted at the same period of time as 2PM and SHINee. Although it's uncomfortable, they know it can't helped being compared to these two groups. 2PM and SHINee have both already stood in the spotlight, but U-KISS's greatest achievement has only been their song 'ManManHaNi' entering SBS Inkigayo's 'Take 7'.



U-KISS confesses, "Honestly, we have many regrets like 'we should have worked harder'. Standing in the confetti and looking over at the winners bearing the trophy for first place, we wish that we can also have the experience of being the winners".

They added, "Technically speaking, we're sunbae to 2PM by one week. But even our hubae idols such as BEAST, Teen Top and Infinite have also surpassed us. We admit that". They have also expressed that it is okay they are steadily climbing up to the top as it does not happen often, ending comparisons with other idols.

U-KISS stated, "Right now we're not envious of 2PM or SHINee, and we do, of course, want to win first place on a music program with 'DORADORA', but we would appreciate it just as much if the public would also take the time to listen to the rest of the songs on the album".

I love the mini and the songs are nice & listenable unlike many albums in K-Pop but I don't think DORADORA is strong enough to win them #1. This is so depressing! T___________________T

Omg, the confetti thing... ;O;

Their Tweet spam for the mini release was kind of depressing too, how they were all Tweeting "let's get #1!", etc. I know that a lot of groups say that, to psych themselves up, but you could really feel their desperation and it broke my heart. I ofc want them to win, because it would mean so much to them and they deserve it, but I highly doubt that they ever will. Maybe I'm just being pessimistic; Idk.

"Doradora" is a really catchy song and they're so great at churning those out. It doesn't have enough range though... there are no Soohyunf glory notes in it and this saddens me.

U-KISS, as much as I love you honey, I really don't think you're ready for Tokyo Dome. In fact, I don't think any Korean acts deserve the Tokyo Dome YET with the exception of TVXQ/JYJ. Honestly I get so bored with people trying to validate their tastes with album sales and awards and whatnot. So lots of people like something, that means it's great? Shit, by that logic, Twilight is the greatest work of literature produced in the last decade.

Granted we're talking pop music here which is not exactly the pinnacle of artistic accomplishment, and perhaps I'm too entrenched in the indie hipster mindset since that's basically all I used to listen to a few years ago, but I honestly don't understand why these things are so important (to fans). I personally would love to see U-KISS win sometime but only b/c it would make them so happy. Otherwise, I only care insofar as getting to see them on my screen again. Shine on, you crazy homoerotic diamonds.

If anything it's made more bizarre given that very few people on this community actually support idols by legally purchasing their albums. It does make me frown to see U-KISS under-perform given, to me, they seem to have incredible appeal and pop music that surpasses their peers, however it isn't a narrative in pop music anyone should be unfamiliar with. Many who shouldn't flop do flop and many who shouldn't sell do sell. I only hope they achieve domestic success so that they achieve some happiness with their work.

However, I do love stanning for the under-dog and it's always great to have a flop that isn't MBLAQ to rally behind! XD

Sigh, I feel so sorry for these boys, they seem to do well enough in Japan but I think they want love from Korea more than anywhere else :(

Their company isn't really helping them either, their past few songs I thought could have actually won if they didn't have a comeback when all the way more popular groups have one too, with mediocre songs no less. :/

but really it is kind of sad that these boys haven't won something yet. i'm not a fan, but i'm sure they work just as hard as the next group and would like to be recognized. but... the spotlight isn't for everyone. i think they do have on advantage: they have a fairly strong international fanbase. having several members who speak english probably helps with that. even if they never land a big hit in korea, they could always tour internationally as they build up their discography.

They're not my biases, but I admit they should have already won something, because they ARE talented and good. Heck, I even bought Neverland and I hardly ever buy original cds unless I absolutely love 3/4 of the songs tbh OTL. It was THAT amazing.
I hope they can at least be quite respected in Japan like DNA and Choshinsei.

Neverland is the first Kpop album I've ever bought and I always enjoy U-kiss' music. I really don't get why they're so underrated in Korea. Oh whatever, just ditch those deaf netizens and come to international fans! <3
