The growing popularity of "Superstar K3" runner-up Busker Busker is showing no signs of slowing down.

On April 19th, the Hanteo charts revealed that Busker Busker's first album, which was released on the 29th of March, has sold 50,476 copies (as of 18th April). As a surprising result, the overwhelming demand has led to the album's need to be reprinted.

Last year, there were only 15 groups in Korea that managed to sell over 50,000 copies of their album, with most of these being established idol groups such as Super Junior, Girls' Generation, TVXQ, JYJ and Big Bang, so for a rookie band to have such results is a great accomplishment.

Busker Busker's popularity has rocked the music industry. Their title track, "Cherry Blossom Endings," has taken the top spot on the Billboard Kpop charts and other music charts. The have also managed to stay on top of the Mnet daily charts for 12 days running, even winning last week's Mnet M! Countdown.

Also, Busker Busker will be holding their solo concert, "The Bus of Youth," on the 5th and 6th of May at the Baekjunyeonginyeom Hall in Yonsei University.

Nicely breaking the the myth that only idols can sell well
I'm really happy for them.

there was a myth like that?

Maybe it's not prevalent for you, but I've often seen excuses along the lines of so and so have great music but don't sell well because they're not idols.

I think it's BS tbh.

*lmao oh now see where I misspoke.. it's not a myth but a notion
you got me!!!

It's not BS. Idols have more exposure+teen fans who are dedicated in going all out. This is an example of a group getting some exposure and going on to sell well. If Korean indie groups had more exposure they would sell more aswell. 10CM got a cf for Americano and became big thanks to that.

While IA that exposure is huge factor for popularity, yet I still don't think being an "idol" is a necessity or requirement to selling well. There's other methods/routes to achieving this as shown by Busker Busker. With the right marketing & music anyone can become successful. That's regardless of their age or without the support of teen demographic, it's not the end all be all of success.

I do think idols do much better in the S. Korea music industry, though. Besides groups like FT Island and CN Blue, there have been fairly few rock/indies groups in comparison who have even come close to rivaling idols in sales.

I like to point out Jaurim and other established Korean rock acts who not only sold well back in the day (and had hit songs alongside idol groups) but are still alive and thriving to this day. That's not something most idol groups can claim.

If nothing else, perhaps, typical of the state of music sales all over the world.

Aren't Korean working hours crazy? I think music just isn't a big priority for the general population. To be fair though, albums aren't worthy buying when you can buy all the songs online cheaper and it's not like half the albums are even worth buying unless you're a hardcore fan.

It's sort of a common knowledge that CD sales are low in Korea.

I read an article once about how the big companies use promotion in Korea mostly to get popular and build a fan base, and promotion in Japan to actually make money.

The digital age is upon us.
Hate it or love it there's no going back, if anything it will probably continue to decrease over time

15 groups that sold over 50k albums? That's pretty sad :| How do musicians manage to make a living if they're not with a major group then?
