lol you know what, though, there are a couple of decent/really good singers in JE, just they never get as much exposure/fame/facetime as Jun or any of the 'it' boys. sad.
Frankly, I think Yamapi has a good voice. Give the guy training and woah, seriously.
But you know who's both overexposed and is a good singer? Akanishi Jin. That guy's vocal range just astounds me, seriously, not to mention he writes his own music + plays instruments. I don't like him much personality-wise but I admit he's a kickass combo of attractiveness and talent.
Tegoshi could sing well and I loved it at first. But his voice isn't good to begin with. I honestly prefer the soothingness of Massu's voice compared to his intense use of vibrato.
Now of course, there are people like Subaru who's surprisingly, pitch perfect. It's both raw but it's pitch perfect. I'm amazed, srsly. Ohno, another guy who's pitch perfect. He's a mama's boy, but damn. XD
But I think you have to give kudos to the JE boys because they never went through the rigors of vocal lessons K-Pop stars go through yet their voices could last numerous 2 hour concerts whenever they have nationwide tours.
Frankly, usually K-Pop stars only do two-three song numbers during music shows + 2-4 concerts per year. Arashi may not be as good as them but they held a concert at Kokuritsu, their voices not failing or cracking much or even at all. They aren't as vocally equipped as K-Pop celebs, but I can say the voices of these K-Pop bands crack more (they already have a tendency to go off pitch during music shows, what more during large-scale concerts?) than theirs during live performances. Plus my friend who tried studying the choreography of both K-Pop and JE songs admit that the JE ones were more difficult because of the footwork and coordination it needs she always puts SHINee as an exception though because she said their choreography is VERY tricky
After this long post, I apologize for wasting your time. XD But believe me, I'm a K-Pop fan. Haha.
eh, idk, i don't think jin's voice is anything special. i don't deny that he's a good singer, but it doesn't wow me like tegoshi's does at times or ohno or subaru's does all the time. and i totally agree with you on the tegoshi/massu aspect: tegoshi's voice is good, but he does that breathy thing at the end also that's always annoyed me, and massu's voice is so well-rounded off and, as you said, soothing. i always enjoy his solos more than anyone's, tbh.
overall, with JE, it's really hit or miss. most of the boys do have decent voices, but it depends on the songs they get to sing. taguchi's voice was more than a little grating in 'samurai love attack' (even though it was one of those songs you just don't take seriously because omg, what) but take 'natsu no basho' or 'wind', and taguchi proves that he might not be the best, but he's decent when it's the right song for his voice. the same with matsujun. usually people think of 'ew nasal!' whenever they hear him, but 'naked' is honestly one of my favorite songs on that album. je just needs to start giving the right songs to the people with the right voices to sing it, that's all.
the concerts are debatable to some extent, though. there's been debate on whether or not arashi lipsyncs during their concerts or just autotune the hell out of their microphones, though the correct assumption is probably a healthy mix of all three. i'm okay with that. and especially in regards to some of the choreography, singing and sounding exactly like the recording would be almost impossible even for the most experienced, and, well, ohno's getting old, you know? :/ it's kind of silly to think about it since it's not like we'll ever know, but it's kind of the whole 'entertainment' value of it, i guess. if i wanted to see some awesome, live singing, i'd go see greeeen or fall out boy in concert, not a je band.
lol, sorry for replying with an equally long post. XD and trust me, i'm a johnny's whore, pretty much.
LOL. But greeeen still don't play live do they? Considering they never had any public appearances EVER. We'll probably have to wait till they're all licensed dentists.
About Matsujun, I wonder why his solos sound decent but his voice in every Arashi song just makes me lol. La Familia was actually superb. But his voice in We Can Make It or One Love...it's like someone put a clothespin on his nose.
Yeah, I agree about that with Jin, but I suppose he's one of the few who was born with a good voice. Someone might shoot me, but he sang the same line as Jaejoong when KT sang Lion Heart as well, and imo, his was better. XD Jae's voice in general is nice, but it does have a tendency to sound too lullabye-ish that it gets boring after a while. Jin's voice has more character. Voice-wise I'm a Junsu whore but I love DBSK equally. XD
OMG Taguchi in wind was surprising to say the least. XD It was so good. Not undermining Taguchi or anything, but that song went beyond my expectations. XD
Makes me wonder though how Massu's voice would go if he had to go through rigorous vocal training. But it scares the shit out me because it might take the rawness out and I wouldn't want any of that. But his voice is just so good to the ears, it should be deemed illegal.
Sorry to butt in, but I just wanted to say that I went to an Arashi concert of the Dream Alive tour, and they lipsynched to most of the songs. Only in some ballads you could hear their live voices. I understand that they have to do it when there's a heavy choreography, but some times they weren't dancing and they were lipsynching anyways.
But I guess you're right. I don't think anybody goes to a JE concert to hear them harmonize... lol. The show in itself is pretty enjoyable, though you spend the whole concert trying to decide which of the members to follow around the concert hall... XD
With this, I can say that the best thing is to watch the DVD, hahah.
also, even though I think the Korean version flows better, the Japanese version isn't bad at all, which is a major first, considering I usually hate one/love the other.
