A South Korean woman has been detained for killing her baby who was born while she was playing online games, police said Thursday.

They said the 26-year-old gave birth while at an Internet cafe in Seoul on March 25. She allegedly put the infant in a plastic bag, sealed it and dumped it in a nearby parking lot.

The woman had visited Internet cafes almost daily, police said.

"She was playing games until right before she gave birth in the cafe's bathroom," a police spokesman in the city's Songpa district told AFP.

"She didn't even know her waters had broken."

Police said the woman was being held in a state nursing facility and would face trial for infanticide.

There have been other reports of deaths related to Internet game addiction in South Korea, one of the world's most wired societies.

In 2010 a mother killed her three-year-old son while she was tired from Internet game-playing. Also in 2010, a 15-year-old boy committed suicide after killing his mother for scolding him over excessive playing of computer games.

A 41-year-old man was sentenced to two years in prison in the same year after he and his wife left their baby daughter to die at home of malnutrition while they were in Internet cafes.

Official figures estimate there are two million Internet addicts.

The government has adopted a "Cinderella" law to ban youngsters from playing online games past midnight as concern grows about Internet addiction

Omg that is terrible. How do people do that? Like she went through all the pain and suffering of childbirth only to kill the infant right away? Does Korea not have safe places? Like hospitals or fire stations or police stations where a woman can drop off a baby with no questions asked? I mean, that still isn't desirable but at least the baby lives that way.

:(

Always hate these stories of people who get so addicted to games that they forget their real lives.

I'm sure Korea has such safe places but hospitals, fire & police stations HAVE to ask why they don't want the baby. The most anonymous way would be a baby flap and I guess a lot of hospitals have those, esp. in the area around Seoul

The mom of a friend I had in middle school did something similar to this. She was at the Texas Motor Speedway with her family and gave birth in the bathroom and just dumped the baby in a dumpster. She had an affair and her husband had a vasectomy so she hid her pregnancy from everyone. She only got like 2 years in jail because they only found her guilty of gross negligence and not capital murder.

Stories like these just break my heart, the baby never even had a chance. It's really so tragic. I hope this lady gets the punishment she deserves.

WAT. I have so many questions, I don't even know where to begin. How on earth did no one notice the fact that this lady's water broke/she gave birth in the restroom?

Date: 2012-04-05 11:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jasmineakaiumi.livejournal.com
There usually aren't many girls at a lot of those cafes so the girl's restroom is ALWAYS open and it's just one stall so you get the whole thing to yourself.

I guess, but I mean, wouldn't someone have heard the newborn baby crying? Or noticed her walking out of the cafe with a naked, red baby in her arms?

Date: 2012-04-06 01:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jasmineakaiumi.livejournal.com
It's quite noisy in there and people would be really focused on their games.. I mean she must have done it some way or another considering she made it out to the parking lot with the poor thing.

Date: 2012-04-06 12:08 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] laceandskin.livejournal.com
But she walked out with the baby in a bag. Even if the baby didn't cry, somehow nobody noticed her leaving the place with a squirming plastic bag in her hand.

Date: 2012-04-06 12:27 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] deerlike.livejournal.com
tbh, I thought she only put the baby in the bag when she was out of the cafe. So, like, I figured she was actually holding the baby when she walked out of the bathroom/through the cafe, and the fact that no one noticed then just boggled my mind.

Date: 2012-04-06 12:33 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] laceandskin.livejournal.com
Let's say that everyone was so busy with their games that they didn't notice her walking out. But what about the people outside?

Unless the cafe was in the middle of nowhere or the streets were deserted, I don't understand how not a single person noticed that there was something strange about her. Her pants and shoes were probably wet from her water breaking and she must have had at least some blood on her.

Date: 2012-04-06 01:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] deerlike.livejournal.com
Exactly! This situation is so unreal, I can't even begin to fathom it. How did no one notice?

Date: 2012-04-06 01:31 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jasmineakaiumi.livejournal.com
mte, it's not entirely impossible since no one seemed to have notice for quite a while, but it's still awful :(

I've been to a few PC rooms but I honestly can't see how not a single person noticed. Even if the people at the computers didn't look up (they're all really into their games most of the time) how did the person at the register not notice at all? The whole situation is so effed up.

D: I approve of that Cinderella law but I don't know if I'd make it include adults of all ages - as in, no more 24-hour PC bangs - but stories like this seriously make me wonder. I mean, sure (and I mean if you MUST), you can be addictively playing a game while 9 months pregnant, but once that baby's out, at least make sure s/he's being cared for!!! T___T Have someone on call or something at the very least.

seriously, though. she must have not been that much of a gaming addict if she had enough time to create a baby in the first place

As someone who used those PC bangs and went through my own phase of gaming craze even on a weekday, I know just how addictive it can be, but she's seriously overdoing it.
