An international dinosaur exposition kicked off in a county in southern South Korea on Friday, featuring displays of rare fossils and vivid models.
The curtain was raised on the triennial Gyeongnam Goseong Dinosaur World Expo at the main venue of the Danghangpo Tourist Site, and the official opening ceremony for the 73-day event was scheduled for later in the day with several dignitaries set to attend.
Goseong, about 466 kilometers south of Seoul and known for its quantity and variety of dinosaur fossils, boasts more than 4,000 dinosaur footprints. More than 1,900 fossilized footprints of dinosaurs are located on a 6-km long stretch of coastal rock bed believed to have been formed approximately 100 million years ago during the early to mid Cretaceous period.
It is recognized as one of the world's three largest fossilized dinosaur footprint sites along with Colorado in the United States, and the west coast of Argentina.
With a theme of "Wakening the dinosaur by the rain drops from the sky," this year's event is focused on raising public awareness of the importance of the environment by shedding light on the mystery of the dinosaurs that thrived on Earth some 65 million years ago, organizers said.

"We found a connection between dinosaurs and the environment. Although the cause for their extinction remains uncertain, it is clearly related to nature," an official from the organizing committee said.
The mammoth venue has eight exhibition rooms with different themes, with one of them showing a 10-minute movie that will give visitors a vivid glimpse into the way dinosaurs lived.
Visitors can also take a look at some 13 pieces of dinosaur fossils from China, including an egg fossil which is presumed to be from the Cretaceous period.
Organizers expected at least 1.42 million people to visit the exposition this year, including 100,000 foreign tourists. The number of visitors reached 1.71 million in 2009 and 1.54 million in 2006.
Opening hours run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends. For more information, visit the Web site www.dino-expo.com, or call the expo organizing committee at 080-2006-114.
