Park Ji-min receives highest score ever on 'K-pop Star'

Singing-audition show "K-pop Star" contestant Park Ji-min gave a recital that sent shivers down BoA's spine and induced BoA's fellow judge Park Jin-young to say he wanted to "pack her in a bag and take her to his management company."

With her rendition of "Over the Rainbow" on March 25, Park was awarded 299 points out of a possible 300 points – 100 points from BoA, 100 points from music producer Yang Hyun-suk and 99 points from Park, achieving the highest score ever attained by a contestant on the show.

Park also shed tears of joy at the praises and secured herself a spot on the top six contestants list.

Others to have made it onto the list are Michelle Lee, Park Jae-hyung, Lee Ha-yi, Baek Ah-yeon and Lee Seung-hoon. Park is the youngest of the contestants at just 15 years of age, while the oldest is Michelle Lee, at 21 years.

The contestants will now battle it out in order to become the next K-pop star. The winner will receive a prize of 100 million won ($87,654) and an additional 200 million won to produce a debut album with YG, JYP or SM entertainment agencies.

Ugh, I do not want to be spoiled for this show but it looks like it can't be helped. The only site subbing it has only subbed up to episode 6 and there is no telling when the next updates will be. The show will have been over for months by the time they're done. :[

I stopped paying attention to K-pop star a few weeks ago.

Somewhere over the rainbow is always a safe choice. You hear it so many times that its kind of a broken record. Jimin is talented, but not my cup of tea. Baek Ah-yeon was my favorite last time i bothered to watch. She always puts a fresh spin on things.

Overall I think some of the top 6 are overhyped and glorified, but all have earned their place there.

The song choice was a bit vanilla, but I think I understand why they gave her 100s. Her vocals were great, not OMG outstanding, but definitely good. I think she was able to convey the feel and the sincerity of the song to the judges however, and not every singer can do that. If you can evoke emotions within your audience, no matter how strong or weak your vocals are, you will be an indispensable artist. Artists like that make people want to change or pay attention. Over the Rainbow has always been a simple song, and in my opinion, always focused on the emotion of the lyrics. So for Park Jimin to be able to do that at the young age of 15, I'm sure those 3 are floored at the huge potential that's within this child.

I found it funny JYP seemed the most dazzled by her, but he was the one who gave her the 99. That may be a case of him being the first judge and not wanting to seem too doting. Who knows. Honestly I think she would do best signed on with JYP though. When I hear descriptions of the other agencies I think JYP's suits her better.

SM is all about the formula and groups. I can't think of a popular SM solo artist right now. I'm not sure there is one.
YG is all about collabs and the family vibe. YG has a distinct style. I've noticed that all the artists' songs are interchangeable. I love YG, but it hit me that Se7en's songs could just as easily be sung by Big Bang and Big Bang's songs could easily be sung by 2ne1. Even Gummy's songs could be sung by Park Bom without it seeming too strange. Tablo and Psy are more independent, but they're import artists, so that's expected. Point is, I'm not sure YG's style fits Park Jimin's voice. It may, but she seems to favor ballads over Soul/R&B.

JYP is the one who doesn't care how you sing so long as you sing with emotion. He's the one that picks artists for their feel more than for their looks. His passion to work with her as well as the reputation his company has makes me feel like JYP is the better fit. (This from someone who likes artists from JYP the least out of the 3)

She's good...but her voice is forgettable? I prefer Lee HaEe and Baek AhYeon's voice, very distinctive. But....my bias is (or are) the two (leftover) boys of the Top 6. JaeHyun's voice is.....lovely and SeungHoon's performance this week was DAEBAK! In fact I was only clapping hard after watching his performance. Totally YG's style and color...so he really suits to YG.

she sang well, but is her grammar off?

anyhoo, she has a very clean voice. and her singing is effortless. she can reach the high notes easily. and part of the appeal is that she's singing in english.

personally, i prefer a voice with a bit more grit to it. but she seems like she already has a style she wants to stick to. i do want to hear her sing more uptempo songs, though.
