The company responsible for hot sensations, Big Bang and 2NE1, YG Entertainment is starting on their world-wide advancement. On the 15th, it was revealed that YG is closer to launching their branch offices, and would be establishing “YG USA” a branch office for their artists’ US advancement, while “YG Hong Kong” would be for their Asian market advancement.

YG has been preparing for world-wide advancement since spring of last year, a YG official reported, and this spring, they are hard at work in their preparations for the establishment of their branch offices in the United States and Hong Kong, and has made this announcement in advance of their formal launching.

The YG branch offices in the US and Hong Kong would be working hand in hand with the domestic agency to help the company’s artists in their overseas expansions. Unlike the traditional way of hiring competent coordinators in the country where they will be advancing into, this way of advancement would allow the artists to work with their own domestic company’s branch offices’ staff.

Meanwhile, YG has been extensively using YouTube and social networking systems like Twitter, as marketing tools. Through this, their artists like Big Bang, have topped the charts in iTunes and other international music charts, even without any overseas activities and promotions. With a branch office like YG USA, their artists like idol groups, Big Bang and 2NE1, would be supported by full-time personnel and the necessary manpower, to bring their music into a more international market, and is expected to also make their fanbases increase in number.

they should really push more Tablo on the american market,...pick up where Epic High and Mapping the Soul left off.
although i'm not surprised if 2ne1 and Big Bang are the ones pushed.
but "interesting" in how this is the man who said months before he wasn't interested in the western market so much.

yup, cause i sworn i read an article on Omona about how there would be no individual tours for his groups outside of Asia. and then bam! look at that....Big Bang in Toronto and unnamed US dates.

I could see Tablo doing well in the western market. I'm still not sold on the idea of 2ne1 having a US debut/English album or whatever. Then again, I don't know the appeal of girl groups/guy groups in that market.

the girl group thing is tough. the American market has really only had a very small handful of girl groups who made it in the mainstream, and those were due to other factors.

two groups come to mind: Destiny's Child made it because they first started out with the R&B/black community support before they hit mainstream pop radio markets. and the Spice Girls were a hit in Europe before their success spilled over into the US market.

2ne1 does have a few things going for them: they break the western stereotype of asian women being quiet and meek, they have that tough kick ass persona which tends to go across here better than the sugary sweet. most of the members speak english well, and they do have Will. I. Am who is still relevant in the music market and seems to have made a connection with the girls rather than just doing it for the money (looking at Kayne towards JYJ).

That's what worries me. Destiny's Child and the Spice Girls were huge in the 90s/early 2000s, even if 2ne1 had an amazing US album, would the public be willing to give them a chance or see them as passe? I know there are many big names who have openly talked about their love for 2ne1 but I wonder if that's enough to ensure a successful career in the US. While I do not enjoy Will.i.am's music, I do trust that he'd want the best for them and probably make sure they have at least some success there.

I still don't know how or why JYJ/Kanye happened.

If they got a powerful conglomerate sponsor like Disney the way Destiny's Child did, they have an OK shot.
But as of now they are nobodies in the US, and the kinds of sponsorships they have are all personal (individual singers/composers here and there); That worries me.

And their 1st place on Iggy is meaningless to many Americans: It's not like Korea where winning 1st place on a weekly sing&dance show is a big deal (for fans and anti-fans, anyway) and people who aren't even into popsong stuff have to hear about it.

All 2NE1 has is an estimated popularity feeling based on numbers off of youtube,
and a recent history of a very underwhelming Japanese expansion.

Welp, I guess as long as they don't diss Disney like the Spice Girls did, they won't prematurely terminate their US careers :V

Honestly I think 2NE1 was never gonna be that big in japan. they like their girls groups super young and super cutesy. I think Japan's just not ready for 2NE1. which is a shame cause they are fierce as fuck. I think stylistically they match better with US pop than Japanese pop. but honestly like you said its just really iffy and imo esp for asian artists to make it big in the US. Honestly on the top of your head can you think of a single real famous asian recording artist in the US? if you think of one i'll be impressed because i cant. its just a hostile market to outsiders esp non westerners.

yeah i did think of him but i wasnt sure if he counted since arent filipinos considered pacific islanders? and if filipino's are considered asian i dont think people think/know he's asian either as it isnt obvious. so its not the same case as 2NE1, esp since he's american born and bred. (also he's a solo artist)

yeah, I understand

and I think most people consider filipinos asian

with the female pop artists seemingly dominating the radio at the moment (i cannot get away from hearing katy perry, nikki minaj, and gaga), it is a ripe time for them to come on over. big names talking about 2ne1 isn't enough to ensure a successful career, and i give it to papa YG in knowing this. honestly, i wouldn't be surprised if he has been sitting back and looking at both JYP and SMe's strategy in their girl groups hitting the US, and taking the best of both while adding YG flavor to it.

i give it to YG for hooking up with someone who cares about the girls, wants the best for them and will promote them properly. where as SMe went in for the "name" factor and associated "name" factor. (i think SMe really has this love affair with Michael Jackson and will employee anyone associated with the name - like Shinee's new choreographer) and JYP...has looked towards other ways for media promotions.

so it will be interesting to see.

Except when you see them off stage. They're one of the groups with the least personality, tbh.

their image onstage and in the public matters the most, especially at the start. if they can keep up that image they may have a shot.

I think 2NE1 could have some success in the US if they're promoted well. Their "fierceness" is appealing to the US market, and they have good party music. I don't think the US isn't open to girl bands atm. Danity Kane probably could've been huge rn if Diddy hadn't messed it up. I think now is the best time for them to debut since female pop artists are dominating the scene. They'd probably have more success in the UK though where pop bands are just more popular in general.

Diddy was an ass with Danity Kane, they really had a shot even with the infighting (which didn't help that i think Diddy flamed a few things going on in that).

i agree with you on 1. they may have more success in hitting the UK first, then come on over and 2. it is a good time for female pop artist.
