A two-year-old video of Girls' Generation's Yuri has been belatedly making the rounds after it was used as basis of her being a disciplinarian.
The problematic clip comes from KBS 2TV's "Invincible Youth," from the time when she participated as a regular member on the program. Back then she used exaggerated gestures and the English phrase "You die" to convey a foreigner.
As the K-Pop fever goes global and gains international awareness, this short clip has incited some outrage from overseas netizens who see it as racial discrimination.
Local netizens left comments that conveyed their confusion, "I watched the video too, but I don't know what is the problem," "Why are people getting angry over this? I don't understand," "Why is such an old video becoming a problem now?" They also left comments like, "I didn't feel anything when I watched it" and "Even when I watched the actual broadcast, it didn't cross my mind that it was an imitation of black people. Do only black people use that phrase?"

i don't think yul meant anything explicitly bad by it, but it's a negative stereotype, so it's still kind of :\

The part where that one girl is like "there is also a black person here" didn't give you a clue that she was imitating a black person?

Kinda suprised though. Surprised this made the news while the other shitload of other racist things that were in the post didnt (like kikwang's blackface, etc)
And this article is "resurfacing" because of the ONTD huge megapost that some of the asian journalists picked up.

Date: 2012-03-12 07:07 pm (UTC)I wish Hollywood had better representation of black people/POC in general, as I feel like people from homogeneous countries do not get to see different representation of races that they cannot see in real life. I don't know if I have expressed myself properly.. But it's like Chris Rock said, white people can be many kinds of things on movies or television, while black people are limited. Granted he was talking about animation, but the feeling still stands. Hollywood pat themselves on the back this year for the recognition The Help received (despite it being quite racist too) and for honoring Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer for playing maids. Come on. I'm not justifying Yuri at all (girl can get educated, no one is stopping her), but I come from a homogeneous country as well and the amount of racism I see here is pretty bad, especially because people are convinced that what they see in movies are exactly how POC act in real life.
