Prince of Asia cuts his hair and wears matching dead furry animals on his coat and boots

Jang Geun-seok is showing off an image transformation for Love Rain, the upcoming drama where he plays a young man in the 1970s who falls in love with Yoon-ah, and then also portrays the man’s son three decades later. These stills come from a recent shoot in Hokkaido; who wants to bet Jang spent all morning cruising the streets trying to get recognized?

They’re calling this look “homme fatale,” which makes me wonder if they understand the term fatale. And homme. His 1970s character, Seo In-ha, is meant to portray a “gentle charm,” while his 2012 character, Seo Jun, is his polar opposite. You know how children love to rebel against the ‘rents. Jun is frank and free-spirited, which is expressed here in his asymmetric hairdo and rocker earring/chain, which inexplicably makes me want to give it a tug. A total id-like response, but you can’t just dangle that thing at me and expect me not to react, can you?

With “Season director” Yoon Seok-ho at the helm and his love of classic melodrama plotlines, expect lots of heartfelt tears, pretty scenery, and depictions of “pure romance.” There’s definitely an audience for this kind of old-school sentimental romance, but I do think it’s passed its golden age, aka the late ’90s and early 2000s. Now, the story seems a bit passé. Let’s hope the drama pulls out some fresh new surprises when it premieres on March 26, ’cause I’ve seen the Season Dramas already, and once (or four times) was enough. Love Rain follows Dream High 2 on Mondays and Tuesdays on KBS.

Also: Hooray for haircuts! Don’t get me wrong, I think Jang Geun-seok pulls off the long hair. It’s just that it’s been a while since he’s had an image change, and I welcome the edgier new look. Even if that chain, I swear. I just want to pull it.

Even though I actually liked his long hair it feels refreshing to see him like this.

And I really hope Love Rain will be a little brighter than the Season Dramas. I could only bring myself to watch Autumn Tale and I swear I only kept watching for Won Bin ahjusshi.
Maybe they could not make the characters cry in every single scene.. Maybe just every second scene?
