SG Wonderfuls Slams Chatline's Use of WG in Ad

Fans of Korean girl band Wonder Girls are up in arms over the misuse of an image of the band for a chatline ad, complete with a suggestive message.

STOMPer Nelson had earlier discovered the ad printed in Lian He Wan Bao 联合晚报. The picture is accompanied by the caption '让我们一起玩吧!' , meaning "Let us play together!".

In an email today ruthhh, moderator for SG Wonderfuls Fan Club wrote:

"I refer to the advertisement, by Voice Response Technology Pte Ltd, printed on page 20 of Lian He Wan Bao 联合晚报 on June 23.

As seen in the advertisement, popular Korean girl-group Wonder Girls are seen 'endorsing' the service by Voice Response Technology Pte Ltd.

Writing as a representative of Singapore Wonderfuls - Wonder Girls Fan Club Singapore, I hope the relevant people involved in this advertisement will take it down and discontinue the publishing of such advertisements.

An official statement of explanation or apology is much appreciated."

"Reasons:

1) This advertisement has made the headlines on STOMP, the International Fanclub of the Wonder Girls, Singapore-based Wonder Girls Fanclub, as well as the popular online community Soompi. Fans have shown their greatest disappointment in this advertisement and has deemed it as misleading and disrespectful.

2) The advertisement will affect Wonder Girls' image as idols both locally and internationally.

3) JYP Entertainment, the management company of the Girls, will presumely take action if informed. Not only the company, Voice Response Technologies Pte Ltd, Singapore Press Holdings will also be affected."

I'm actually getting quite upset at the Singaporeans who are feeling embarrassed of their own country because of a stupid ad.

To those people who said that they are embarrassed because it's "from their country", are you embarrassed because of the ad, or because of the SG wonderfuls' reaction?

Some people need to get their priorities straight. It's sad.

Why is the fanclub's reaction seen as so... inappropriate? Maybe this ad isn't actually important and no one who's important would ever have seen it and got the wrong idea of Wonder Girls, but in principle isn't it still wrong to use their image for anything they have not been paid for? And especially if it's as sleazy as this? Why's anybody assuming that SG Wonderfuls are losing sleep over this? If it isn't affecting their sleeping/eating patterns, I say writing a letter like this isn't too big a reaction at all.
