K-Pop
South Korea is planning the world revolution: With big wide eyes, gaga-lyrics and a bad-ass strategy.
Girls' Generation are South Koreas most successful pop-export. They're on the tube in million of asian countries and deliver in a perfectly produced pop manner one #1 hit after another one. Their song "Gee" has more than 65 million views on youtube, more than probably every other group in the western world.
A whole army of korean bands takes over the asian music market. Korean Pop - short K-Pop - dominates the music scene in Japan, India and China. Hallyu, the so-called korean wave, brings music, tv-series and fashion trends all over asia - with success.
Mike Noh
"The lyrics in US- or western music are about ruined love or destructive emotions most of the time. They even swear in the songs sometimes. Teenager in the asian culture can't understand this. In K-Pop, simply melodies and lyrics meets powerful dances, in sync movements and catchy choreographies - that's what they like."
Especially three big agencies are responsible for the training of future korean popstars. One of them is JYP Entertainment. People that sign here at the age of 14 have good chances of being successful as soon as they're 20. Mike Noh supervises many of them who are training with their (JYPE) own training system.
Mike Noh
"It would be a lie to claim that looks aren't important, but good manners are more important. They have to impeccable know the manners of the asian culture, like decencies, how to greet others and of course foreign languages. We monitor accurately if they internalize our training, especially the foreign languges-, dance- and vocal lessons. We rate all of this every month, using a points system that we've made. The people with the highest score are allowed to debut in a group."
Music producer Bernie Cho talks about the importance of K-Pop for his country
In the pop-cultural controlled economy, nothing is left to chance, even the looks of the groups. South Korea is the country with the most plastic surgeries in the world.
To have success in other countries the groups have to study the language of their respective audience. 2PM, for example, had to study japanese for over a year and were tested by their agency before they were allowed to go on a japan tour. It's a given in the industry by now that their english skills are perfect.
Bernie Cho
"Look at some of the top-acts who are successful in asia: There's always someone in the group who is not korean. And that's on purpose! I think that's brilliant! Nowadays, even foreign acts come to korea cause they want to understand how to create popstars, they want to learn from the K-Pop school."
Of course the South Korean government recognizes all of this: Four months ago the ministry of education and cultural affairs even opened a own department for their popmusic. The national television broadcaster KBS scores massive ratings with music shows which last several hours, and broadcasts an all-around care-free image of korea in more than 70 countires all over the world. K-Pop manages to do something that diplomates have tried for years: Korea gets recognized. No surprise that even the culture secretary is a fan.
Kwang Shik Choe, culture secretary
"K-Pop plays an important part that Korea has a positive image in the world. It helps to improve our image. Because of K-Pop, the general interest in korean literature, traditional music and our products has risen. Music helps us to make Korea more famous in the world!"
Bernie Cho
"It doesn't matter if we talk about korean cars or entertainment electronics, about korean food or alcohol: Thanks to K-Pop, "Made in Korea" is now hip, trendy, hot and cool."
K-Pop takes over the world! And maybe even the communistic sister state: Chinese smuggler say that in North Korea, CD's and DVD's from the South sell like hot cakes.

Date: 2012-03-04 04:42 pm (UTC)The thing that irked me though was that they didn't show many different Stars - I mean, where would Hallyu be without pioneers like BoA, DBSK, JYJ, BigBang and all the other big names? Instead they show Sistar for a big length of the video....:/

"Look at some of the top-acts who are successful in asia: There's always someone in the group who is not korean. "
...although Jessica and Tiffany grew up in the States, they're still Korean. And how about Super Junior, DBSK, Big Bang, etc, aren't they all fully Korean?
