Rambunctious yet serious, honest yet absurd, cute yet exuding masculinity. When watching Block B, words that usually don’t coexist come together. They burn with competitive spirits for a cute character pen, answer questions about broadcasting standards so honestly to the point that it’s scary, and their name is Block B.
The idol group gathered and created by Cho PD, Block B (Zico, P.O., Jaehyo, Taeil, B-Bomb, Park Kyung, U-Kwon) returned with their second mini album, “Welcome to the Block”. From their greatly enriched, addictive sound to their witty stage manner, Block B, who are currently actively promoting their outstanding title track “Nanlina”, did not lose their smiles despite their hospital visit.
Leader Zico had been especially spending a harsh winter due to being diagnosed with vocal chord nodules and a severe cold. “At first when my throat hurt, as a rapper I thought I’d harden it so my voice would sound cooler. But because my throat hurt, sounds I don’t want to hear came out instead. I’ll take care of my throat and show an improved image quickly,” he said.
The word that comes to most people’s minds when thinking of Block B is “review”. Two tracks from Block B’s mini album, “Did You or Did You Not” and “LOL” did not pass KBS’s review. Problems arose because “Did You or Did You Not” can be seen as a vulgar expression and “LOL” contained the word “ggondae” (a negative slang term for elders). The Block B members questioned the reviewing standards for vulgar expressions.
“I think the scope in which the reviewers are thinking is biased towards a strange direction. When I made “Did You or Did You Not”, I wasn’t thinking of something like that at all. If anything they are seeing the song in an insidiously opposite way. I wonder how they got the idea that it is a vulgar expression,” said Zico.
The members, who had turned serious when talking about the review, quickly became spirited again. “When Zico produces a song, he always comes to me for inspiration,” quipped Kyung, laying on the self-praise. Jaehyo complained, “I feel old. Especially after I wake up from a long rest and my waist and head don’t feel refreshed, I really feel like I aged,” said 23 years old Jaehyo who was born in the year 1990, expressing his sorrow through his unique gag.
For the second mini album’s release, the Block B members have made extraordinary preparations. Some members could not forget the nervousness they felt on the eve of the CD’s release. “Actually, I thought that we’d enter the charts at around number 28. But the moment the CD was released it was ranked from 1 through 5,” said Zico. “I was most touched while we were doing the group’s promotions,” he recalled. Jaehyo showed his hilarious side by joking, “We were eating seol-leong-tang (a type of beef and noodle soup) and it felt like we were cheering for the world cup.”
“We’ve come out after a long time. You were upset because we released the track overseas before showing it in Korea, right? We’ll relieve your feelings as much as the long time we were gone for by showing a better image of ourselves,” said P.O. addressing the Korean fans.
Block B set a bold ambition, declaring that they would ingrain their name in people’s minds with proper promotions through this album.
“I want to engrave the name Block B in the public’s mind. This is the second mini album but it’s the first time we’re clearly promoting throughout Korea. We’re always thankful and apologetic to our fans because as singers, we haven’t shown much to our fans. But this time we’ll do our best to promote properly so our fans can proudly say, “I’m a fan of Block B”.
