S. Korea faith-healer father's children found dead

Three children were found dead in South Korea Saturday after their faith-healing father, a Christian pastor, attempted to treat their illnesses only with prayers, police said.

The bodies of the children, aged 10, eight and five years old, were found by their relatives at their home next to the pastor's church in the southern county of Boseong, a detective at Boseong Police Station told AFP.

"They were apparently suffering from infections that went untreated for a long time as the father was only praying for them instead of seeking medical treatment," he said.

The 43-year-old pastor's fourth child, a year-old baby, was taken in protective custody by police, the detective said, adding the father was under questioning.

A pastor and his wife were detained Sunday on suspicions of assaulting and starving their three children to death, police said.

The three children ― aged five, eight and 10 ― were found dead in their home attached to the church where their father works in Boseong, 398 kilometers south of Seoul.


“It is presumed that their deaths are caused by assault and starvation at the hands of their parents,” said an officer at the South Jeolla Provincial Police Agency.

He said the parents kept their bodies for more than 10 days until they were found by a relative Saturday morning.

The three, all biological children of the 43-year-old unordained pastor identified by his surname Park, had shown symptoms of the flu for some time, but their father chose prayer over medical intervention, the police officer said.

The parents are also accused of beating the sick children to “exorcise” them and made them fast, he added. A preliminary autopsy found multiple bruises on their bodies, but no sign of food in their stomachs.
It is suspected that the children hadn’t eaten since Jan. 23 up until they died between late Feb. 1 or the morning of Feb. 2. The parents said they had started a fast and prayer on Jan. 23.

Police are investigating the exact cause of the children’s deaths while placing a fourth child in protective custody.

This is what I hate about organized religion. It turns normal people insane. People need to get it into their heads no one has a personal relationship with God. Faith is all good and dandy, but people need to get a reality check.

This happened to my dad. He was sick at a party, the host's mother refuse to give him medication instead she started to pray. We asked for couple of plastic bags and walked out.

I despise people like this. I remember when a little girl in my area died because she had diabetes and her mother thought she could pray it way. Disgusting. Its perfectly treatable and God gave us a brain so we could learn how to treat people. There is the answer to your prays, go to the doctor. He's probably majorly face-palming up there.

Why must the children always pay for their parents/guardians' blind selfishness?
Why can't they just kill themselves and leave the kids out of it?
If you're religious then you should at least know that murder/negligent homicide is a sin and try as much as possible to prevent it.

I don't have anything against religion per se but I do find it unforgivable when people let their blind faith supersede simple and basic common sense. Your God gave you a brain. Use it for crying out loud! If they believe in God so much then they should also believe in what God has made, aka, intelligent and knowledgeable doctors who created modern medicine. You can't believe in God and not believe in man. That is contradictory. The herbs etc that medicine comes from were put here by, oh my gosh, God!
I always think that belief in organized religion requires a kind of insanity but some people just go above and beyond. Too many innocent children have lost their lives as a result of adults' obsessive beliefs, especially when it comes to exorcisms.

Now, according to their faith, the kids will spend eternity in heaven and they'll go to hell. At least that's fitting, I guess. Karma always wins.
Hopefully the baby will have a chance at a good life. I'll pray for that.

These people need to get their heads checked, and maybe when they are diagnosed with some mental illness, they will both pray and fast to miraculously be rid of the ~plague of insanity~. Oh, and also beat each other up to be ~exorcised~.
