Does Girls’ Generation have what it takes to conquer the US? Based on the number of fans that showed up to their fan signing event in New York, the answer is a resounding YES!

According to SM Entertainment, Girls’ Generation held a fan signing event at the electronic retailer Best Buy in New York’s Union Square on February 2.

To everyone’s surprise, over 1,300 fans showed up to the meet and greet, far exceeding the number of people that the event coordinator expected that the event to draw.

Die-hard fans stood in line since early in the morning for a chance to meet the lades of Girls’ Generation and the New York police had to be dispatched for crowd control. For safety reasons, Best Buy also decided to close the store to all other customers.

The SM Entertainment spokesperson also added that this is second time in Best Buy’s history that they decided to close the store for safety reasons; the first time being when Lady Gaga stopped by to meet with her fans.

That's a lot of people! so jealous of them tbh, but i still don't know if that's enough to make it in the US, i'll just keep wishing them the best of luck and support them!!

Not trying to belittle them or something but isn't NYC's Union Square always crowded though?

Sorry, just really not convince about America being ready for Korean idols.

if the number isn't exaggerated, this is good for something that wasn't widely advertised (they never mentioned the fansignng at either shows they appeared on). i'm sure some were probably fans, and some were just those who came to support KPop in the US - it happened at the WG and JYJ shows.

i'm happy for them, but SM needs to remember that more work needs to be done.

NOW, how can we get a fansigning when SJ finally gets their SS4 over here. hell, i would pay extra for my SS4 ticket if that was added on.

This is no small feat, I'm so proud of them they've come a long way from chasing people around in factory girl for their editors job to having a fan meet in NYC with 1,300 people

Cool beans. I don't think they did make much of new fans though with their American TV promo considering how Boys didn't chart after them at all in Itunes top 1000.

We all know that the articles talking about them taking over the American music scene were coming. lol

This is pretty good, and they had a great turn out, but...it is also a bit blown up. As expected.

Yep that's exactly how it was. Only like.... very VERY few I think, who for some strange reason stayed lined up the whole time, got to go in cause they apparently accepted a few extra people in for autographs.

I understand how the US are an attractive market since they are the biggest market but I truly think that K-pop sould focus more on Europe when it comes to non-asian activity.
They have better chance to succeed imo.

*annoyed face* Yet another blown-up article about how HUGE KPop is like omg. And no, SNSD still aren't huge in America. Most likely anyone that showed up there were already SNSD fans, and therefore no huge breakthrough.

It's a decent number imo (more than I thought seeing the pictures) but apparently not living up to Omona's standards. Why are y'all expecting 10,000 or something?

Conquer is a word thrown around too much.

Date: 2012-02-06 07:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kittycurious.livejournal.com
The fact the word "conquer" is thrown around is what makes me side-eye the numbers. 1,300 people is good, but it's far from them conquering the US market.
Then again, I'm not sure what artists like Gaga, Beyonce, etc. would be expected to pull numbers-wise for a fansign event; so maybe 1,300 is really really good for America's fansign-standard?

seriously the 24 hours before this were some of the most stressful, holy shit. sme/best buy/ssf had an immense amount of side-eye from a vast majority of people even just hours before. i feel especially bad for those that made the trip across the country and even further only to get denied because of vague bullshit planning 101; that's hundreds of dollars in travel expenses they aren't going to get back. :'(

aside from that, i love whenever the girls are in nyc! :') it was very easy to spot them last week.

I got there at 6 a.m bc that's the time they said line up would start, but wasn't expecting a bunch of fans to have camped out the night before. I mean it sucks because I lost a few extra hours of sleep, but I live only an hour and a half away from the city so the trip wasn't too bad. At least I didn't spend crazy money on hotel/travel fare like most ppl did =/

I was really disappointed with how things were handled. SM gets most of the blame but I was side eyeing ssf/best buy as well.

I'm not surprised tbh. When I got there at 6 a.m there were already 800 ppl lined up to buy the cd. Once I realized I wasn't getting my CD/wristband, I left but I wouldn't be surprised ppl where sneaking around during the time of the fansign. If they didn't manage to get an autograph, I'm sure most were trying to at least get a glimpse of the girls.

1300 fans in NY? Psh. Call me when it's 1300 fans in Kansas. Going to a state like NY, California, Texas, or even Georgia and getting big numbers of fans to come out is expected. They have the highest asian populations and the first 2 always get an influx of asian acts. They eat it up. JYJ got better numbers than that and they certainly haven't been said to be conquering the US or any of the countries they've visited. I'm hoping one day there's an asian act that manages to successfully get in and get regular air play in the American market, but so far no one's there yet.
