New cable TV program "Let Me In" draws negative responses

By Yun Suh-young

A new cable TV program giving free plastic surgery to selected participants is raising a lot of eyebrows as many viewers find the show uncomfortable to watch. The new show, called “Let Me In,” which started airing on Dec. 2, chooses patients out of a pool of thousands of applicants who feel self-conscious about certain body parts or have health issues and offers them plastic surgery at no cost. “Me-in” means a beauty in Korean. As a result, they are reborn as completely different people, most of them made over not only on the parts they requested to change, but also on other areas of their body.

Two months into airing, the show is already drawing skeptical responses from a number of viewers.

On the message board of the program, a viewer posted: “I don’t understand what the purpose of this program is. Some of the people who get surgery look normal and could be beautiful if they took care of themselves. Wasn’t the program intended to help people with deformities?

Viewers who posted critical comments generally agreed that the show seemed to promote plastic surgery overall.

I could not help thinking that the program was nothing but an advertisement vehicle for plastic surgeries. It felt like the show was promoting a certain view about beauty. The more they stress the fact that women are treated well if they become more physically beautiful through plastic surgeries, isn’t that an outright degrading of our existence as human beings?” wrote a viewer with the ID: dot***.

The episode that received the most criticism from viewers was one in which a woman who had very small breasts had them enlarged. She claimed that she did not feel like she was a woman and felt betrayed when her husband had an affair with another woman. She attributed her failure in marriage to her small breasts. A viewer said, “The woman with small breasts received surgery worth 60 million won. Her breasts became abundant and her face also changed through a complete make-over. Then what? Will her mental distress disappear? Will her husband now be faithful to her? Does anyone know how she’s living after the surgery?

Indirect advertising

Regarding such criticism, a doctor from the show said there are people who really need surgery and the “woman with the small breasts” was one of them.

There were only two cases that I agreed with carrying out surgery. The woman with the small breasts is one and the woman with the drooping waistline is the other. The woman with small breasts was undergoing severe mental distress and had very low self-esteem. Breasts are a symbol of femininity. She was devastated by the fact that her husband had an affair and she attributed it to her lack of femininity. I actively approved of the surgery,” said Yang Jae-jin, a psychiatrist who takes part in the show. He is one of the nine doctors who decide which participants to award surgery to. Other viewers pointed out that the surgeries were superfluous.

If a woman wants larger breasts, then she should just get the necessary surgery. Why is the show remodeling her entire body and turning her into another person? The makeover worth millions sends the message that money is the answer to everything,” said a viewer by the ID: min***.

Some openly questioned the sponsorship of the program. “I guess the program is sponsored by plastic surgeons. These days, regular people fantasize about plastic surgery and the program encourages the phenomenon even more,” said viewer by the ID: ma****.

The show, however, needs not to be criticized too fiercely since it was basically created out of commercial purposes, doctors say.

These kind of makeover shows aren’t created out of pure generosity or the wish for the well-being of patients. Advertising for medical businesses is banned. So the show is a form of indirect advertisement. Plastic surgeons need publicity and the show needs high ratings. That’s why the show is programmed that way. It can be seen as a commercial in the mask of medical treatment,” said Noh Jai-sung, head of Department of Psychiatry at Ajou University Medical Center.

It’s too much to ask for deeper content from the show. Besides, people wouldn’t watch it if it was too complex. It is a social problem that plastic surgery has become so popular. Beauty is way too focused on appearance. Mass media plays a big role in spreading the image of celebrities, thus creating a certain standard for beauty,” he said.

The show is simply supporting the growing demand for artificial beauties, an already rampant social malaise, he said.

We have similar crappy shows in the UK like 10 years younger etc

"The woman with small breasts was undergoing severe mental distress and had very low self-esteem. Breasts are a symbol of femininity. She was devastated by the fact that her husband had an affair and she attributed it to her lack of femininity"

The husband was a douche fuck. It's not her lack of boobs.

this sounds like a show we have/had (not sure if its still on) in germany
in each episode of this show they had another woman who was "ugly". most of these women had damaged teeth as their main problem, but they also got a boob job and PS on other parts of their body, basically a completely make-over. they also got a new hair and make up and everything.
i remember that people went crazy when they aired the first episode, and im not sure what i should think of shows with a concept like this. of course its a great opportunity for women that really suffer from their appearance, but people who are already beautiful and dont need PS shouldnt be on a show like this.

here are some before-after pictures from the german show

oh, this reminds me of another korean show that helped a girl get her teeth fixed. actually, i think she didn't have much teeth anymore. so she needed to get implants. she was already pretty, so she didn't really need any other procedure done. but for the most part, the show was about plastic surgery.

as long as they're not coerced into getting plastic surgery, i think it's okay to get one. but it seems like that one lady with small breast also got some other procedures that she didn't want/need.

so is the psychiatrist also indirectly advertising his services? it seems like the participants or anyone who undergoes plastic surgery need to talk to a mental health expert before and after getting a procedure done.

The US has more then one show that promotes plastic surgery.... none of them lasted (to the effect I can't even remember the name), so I guess I'm not too concerned.

Who cares, they make this kind of shows around the world all the time!!! and people need to stop blaiming the media for everything, they should to to therapy first if they are so heavily influenced to go as far to get surgery for the wrong reasons.

Why should we stop blaming the media? They take advantage of these woman in the first place. You can help them them to get therapy instead of plastic sugery.

And with that I mean the makers of these shows.

I understand that it's not the best type of show for many reasons, and i'm not against surgery but i would never do it myself at the same time, but for me it's like people throwing shit at the fashion industry all the time because of the skinny models and people dieting, or people getting surgery because of hollywood beauty standards, or violence in videogames and the list goes on...

Ugh, reminds me of a US show one of my friends introduced me to called Bridalplasty. Brides-to-be were all competing to get plastic surgery and a fully paid honeymoon trip. Crazy thing? The groom-to-bes didn't know they were on the show! They would only know after they were voted off or when the winner got to show herself off to her groom. The real kicker to all of this was when a woman was voted off she was left with the parting shot of, "Your wedding won't be perfect." Media is out of control with presenting plastic surgery as "natural", presenting ill fitting clothing as something that fits, and basically beating into everyone you should change your body for fashion. Fashion shouldn't accommodate your body. Not to mention people aren't given the tools to disect what media and entertainment show off.

omg that show was ridic. I tuned in once and all the girls were sitting around eating dinner. They all had casts on their noses and bandaged around their faces. They were complaining about their husbands "not getting me and my dreams for the perfect wedding".

I almost cried, yo

I'm surprised Korea didn't already have this.

One thing I find interesting here in general is the fact netizens voiced their displeasure.
We always get to hear that surgery is considered rather normal in Korea and that people are so openly criticizing what is going on there shows a completely different side of things.

KOREAN VERSION OF EXTREME MAKE-OVER

But they basically got rid of that show here in the US and replaced it with Biggest Loser, which emphasized changes healthily rather than doing surgery.

meh

yep, yep...

"Her breasts became abundant and her face also changed through a complete make-over. Then what? Will her mental distress disappear? Will her husband now be faithful to her? Does anyone know how she’s living after the surgery?"

an ass is an ass because they are an ass, not because of how you look
her husband was an ass, end of story. Her changing herself will not change that. Real love is when the person love you for who you are, not what they want you to look like or what you think you should look like.

"Regarding such criticism, a doctor from the show said there are people who really need surgery and the “woman with the small breasts” was one of them"

and this doctor is a greedy ass

what these people need is therapy, therapy has the ability to help change the way that people view themselves. surgery just changes one physical aspect, that is it. when people grade themselves on what they are physically, that is when they are unhappy because the truth is, your thighs will always be too big or too small, your lips too thin or too fat, etc, and you will never be happy. what that woman with the small breasts needed to learn was that there are all kinds of femininity and that her husband was an ass.

if there was to be a show, there needed to be one like THE SPA OF EMBARRASSING ILLNESSES from The UK.
