K-Pop fans are sure to remember the recent ad campaign for the North Face. Popular group Big Bang was chosen as the celebrity endorsers for the brand
. The campaign had even taken the members to New Zealand for promotional photo shoots and commercial filming of the fellas and gear in action.

It appears that the North Face jackets are a hot commodity in Korea. In fact they might be too hot (this is not a reference to the jackets warmth). The down jacket has become something of a status symbol in the Korean school system; where it has been dubbed as “backbreakers” (for the hard work that went into being able to afford one). Due to the violence surrounding the jackets, they have also synonymously become an indication of being part of a gang.

An individual’s status can be defined from the jacket worn. For instance, the Nuptse 2 (₩250,000, $220 USD) is worn by “losers” while the Himalayan Down Parka (₩700,000, $608 USD) is worn by “the big boss.” Students won’t wear the expensive jackets in fear they will be targeted by gang members. Most recently, five Busan middle schoolers had gone around pilfering North Face jackets. They had beaten four students and stole their jackets. One of the students arrested explained the reason behind the theft, “I just wanted the North Face jacket.” The violent rampages surrounding these jackets have been quite the issue asCNNGO even covered the topic.

Sure, the jackets are plenty warm for the brutal Korean winters, but that is not why these jackets are in demand. First off, the jackets are made by an American company, so they are foreign. Anything foreign is going to be rare and sought after. Second of all, they are expensive-- A sure sign of status, not everyone is capable of owning one. Third, idol endorsement. Just because top stars were seen wearing something it becomes an instant must have item. Lastly, it is a brand name. Most of the world equates the brand with hardcore outdoor enthusiasts. In this case it has nothing to do with the jacket’s style. A stylish Korean jacket can be bought for considerably less and would be just as warm.

Certainly none of the aforementioned reasons warrants this type of behavior. At times fashion and fandom get out of hand. The desire behind something spirals out of control that it only leads to violence. Enough is enough!

What is your opinion on the matter?

Endorsing something doesn't make them responsible or their fault. Titling Big Bang in this matter is ridiculous. It's just a name brand being associated with gangs. Happens all the time where I'm from.

I don't think the article was blaming big bang. There are many factors it points out.

Not surprised. It reminds me of kids getting jumped for their Jordans back in the 90s.

where it has been dubbed as “backbreakers” (for the hard work that went into being able to afford one)

The only people breaking their backs are the workers in China & Bangladesh who make the damn things, no doubt in factories right next door to the ones that produce $40 jackets. Always amazes and/or disgusts me the lengths some people will go to get their stupidly overpriced brand name stuff.

... immaturity at its finest :| These kids should go back to school and focus their energies on their studies instead :|

nitpicky sidenote: I reeeeally don't like how this article was written. IDK, it's a bit incoherent and this ("In fact they might be too hot (this is not a reference to the jackets warmth).") was so awkward O_o

you might have "the big boss" jacket, but if you got it through hurting someone and stealing that jacket from them, then you're really still just a "loser" imo.

All I can say is, damn. The stuff I throw (because I can't get to wear them in Southeast Asia--and I work for The North Face so I always get freebies) away are actually what people would kill other people for :-S

my aunt who lives in the u.s. told me of how gangs/degenerates (my term) would steal north face jackets. and some of them would attack anyone with a north face jacket so they could either destroy the it or steal it. and that was a few years ago. :o(

When I was in middle school, I got beat up because this guy wanted to give his girlfriend a necklace I had. He got expelled, but I still have a mark around my neck. So yeah, this isn't really surprising to me

Ugh I remember in my freshman year of high school people were jumping each other for North Face jackets. I will never understand why people feel the need to do this.

I don't remember people in my school fighting over North Face jackets, but I do know that like EVERYONE had one. I kind of thought they were ugly, and didn't see the appeal. We didn't even live in a particularly cold climate.

lol same. I live in Texas. I assumed everyone had one at school because they all went skiiing or snowboarding for vacations. I didn't because I was poor but I did force my grandma to get me one so I could fit it in. So messed up.

i remember last year when i was studying in beijing, all of my korean classmates went on a shopping trip to the fake markets to get dozens of those north face jackets (fake ones, obvsly) before going home during chinese new year break.
i thought thought most of the jackets were pretty ugly, though :'D
