The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) recently conducted a survey on the brand image of South Korea among young people in Europe. They surveyed 1208 youths, aged 18-30 years old, in five major European cities -- London, Paris, Frankfurt, Milan and Budapest.

When asked about what comes to mind they think of South Korea, the respondents answered North Korea (9%), K-Pop (6.9%) and Seoul (6.5%). Others mentioned war, Samsung, kimchi, the 2002 FIFA World Cup and taekwondo.

When asked about K-pop singers, the respondents cited BIGBANG (8.8%), BEAST (5.8%), Girls Generation (5.5%), Dong Bang Shinki (3.3%) and Rain (3.0%).

Awareness of South Korea and a preference for Korean culture and the country itself were highest in Hungary, followed by France, Italy, Britain and Germany.

"Awareness of South Korea and a preference for Korean culture and the country itself were highest in Hungary, followed by France"

it's like this survey has been made between my friends and i.

but where exactly has it been made... i mean, random people or in universities where you can learn korean, etc.

and to conclude: why no ygfam concert in europe already? billions of polls showed that we prefer big bang over any group we get.

I think I took part in this survey, it was made by a University and was specifically for Europeans.

At my Uni only those who study Korean were asked if I remember correctly
...I think they were the only ones informed about this survey anyways :3

So yes, that's not a poll targeting European youth but more like young European people already interested in Korea.
And we had some surveys in my uni (oriental languages) and some really lie not to be seen as oppa lovers so... well, i will half ignore this survey lol

It's safe to say that at least at my Uni all of my fellow Korean learning girl-students know/listen/ship kpop
The level of batshit differs tho :'D

Most of them do, indeed, but then this alters the results. They should do one with the European Youth, period.
If Korea reads it they'll again say kpop takes over the world etc, and like Music Bank in Paris, it's going to disappoint some later lol.

OT but your icon is wonderful. Is it some artwork or something? I really really like it...

In Hungary, you can learn Korean in two (or one - i'm not sure) universities, if you are really, really lucky, but as I see k-pop is popular among teenagers and ppl who are in their 20s, so maybe it was a random thing here. In the previous year I watched 'News' and there was a report about k-pop, with an interview with Beast. I was so surprised because they usually just show important domestic and foreign news.

Yes but according to people here, it really targeted students learning Korean, or at least people who frequent Korean culture related place (I don't know what do you have in Hungary - I have a friend there though I could ask). It's not a global thing. See kpop, kimchi... A random teen would probably not say this, considering you may learn about Korea at school, North Korea is a more appropriate answer... or I really doubt the hallyu, even as a Korean student.

For the news reports, imo, it's not all about the trend but also depends on the journalist, if he really is ubiquitous etc. If he catches the trend at the right moment etc..

But it seems like there's a good vibe for hallyu there anyway!

My aunt conflates North and South Korea. Regardless of all the colorful k-popness she's seen, she still thinks SK is this empty, gray place where you go to a gulag by lottery or something.

I'd probably still think of "kimchi" first. ngl

nothing about what I say makes sense after someone posts a gif with those two being all sweet to each other...
Oh and I bet if I say "do you know SK?" to one of the dumb poeple out there, they wouldn't even be able to tell me where that is.

Good for Beast being so reknown here :).

No! Mozart! Arnie!
