Sooyeon Lee: Grand Slam
2012-01-15 10:24 pmThe Table Tennis Champ Stars in Matthew Donaldson's Slow-Mo Homage to the Sport. Looks include pieces by Versace, Jil Sander, Christopher Kane and Christian Louboutin.
Korean table tennis champion, actress and former model Sooyeon Lee challenges herself to a high-fashion endurance match in a film by Matthew Donaldson. "It's a vehicle to show how extraordinarily elegant she is," says the filmmaker and photographer, who enlisted stylist Katie Shillingford to emphasize Lee's technique. "The sport requires the body to jolt into action in an aggressive manner that is mesmerizing," she says. "I wanted the clothes to accentuate these movements.” Shillingford commissioned designer Geraldine Chevrolet to create bespoke fringed tights, gloves and a hat, pairing the custom accessories with neon, black and nude jumpsuits, dresses and leggings from Christopher Kane, Mark Fast, Jil Sander and Versace. Originating in 1880s Britain as an after-dinner parlor game, the Olympic sport of table tennis has recently emerged as the boutique pastime of choice, evidenced by actress Susan Sarandon's SPiN, a chain of ping-pong clubs which counts Lee as its ambassador and has locations in New York, Toronto and Hollywood. "It's become very trendy," Lee observes. "It's sociable, you don't need to be super athletic and it's good for the brain."

Opening Night at SPiN New York on September 17, 2009 in New York, New York.
Soo Yeon Lee is an extraordinary table tennis champion, an elegant fashion model, and an actor.
Born in Pusan, South Korea, Soo Yeon Lee began her extensive training in table tennis at the age of nine years old under the supervision of former Olympic Gold Medalist Jung Hwa Hyun. Recognition for Soo Yeon's extraordinary skills came early when she won successive titles as the Korean National Junior Team Champion starting from the age of twelve; including 1st Place in the Taiwan International Junior Table Tennis Championship and 2nd Place, Czechoslovakia International Junior Table Tennis Championship.
Soo Yeon's unique defensive technique, emphasizing spin variation and highly finessed movements, soon earned her a place on the world-renowned Korean National Team where she went on to take 2nd place in the World University Championship in China. Additional championship achievements in table tennis include being crowned the 2004 New Zealand Women's Singles Champion and Senior Female Sportsperson of the Year. In 2007, she came to the United States, and won the Under 2400 category in the U.S. Open Championship and later the Cary Open Women's Singles. In 2008, she won the San Diego Women's Singles Division; and most recently, the Killerspin Invitational Tournament Championship in Chicago in 2009.
Her elegant style and unusual look have branded Soo Yeon Lee as the new "face" of contemporary table tennis on the world stage. Not surprisingly, it has also explosively launched her ongoing career in both television and fashion as a high fashion model and a public sports advocate. As a result, Soo Yeon has graced the pages of Vanity Fair, GQ, Cosmopolitan, Interview Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, as well as making guest appearances on the Jay Leno Show, the Entourage television series, ESPN, CBS, NBA TV, MTV, and Fuel TV. She has also appeared in both print and television ads for Nike, K-Swiss world campaign, Asics, McDonald's, and X-Japan's music video, among others. (read more)
