Girls’ Generation’s Japanese Album Surpasses One Million Shipments Mark

Girls’ Generation’s first Japanese album “Girls’ Generation”, which was released last year on June 1st, surpassed the one million copy shipments mark on January 11th, half a year later.

The only other albums to pass this mark were BoA’s “Listen to My Heart” in 2002 with 1.29 million copies, “Valenti” with 1.4 million copies in 2003, and “Best of Soul” with 1.2 million copies in 2005. Being a Korean girl group, surpassing the one million copy shipments mark for the first time is an amazing accomplishment for Girls’ Generation.

Girls’ Generation took the top spot on the Oricon chart in their first appearance, and stayed in the top ten for thirteen weeks, a record for a “long-seller” (artists usually stay in the top ten on the Oricon chart for an average of one to two months, so thirteen weeks is especially long for a foreign artist). With the repackaged version of the girls’ first Japanese album being released on December 28th, the album came back onto Oricon’s weekly chart at number two, and with this passed the one million shipments mark.

Kara didn't have a repackaged version like SNSD. But based on Kara's sales I was thinking they where going to suspase SNSD until SNSD suddenly started to sell a huge amount of copies again. My take on it was that Sone's saw it to and decided to do something about it. Because the week after I thought Kara was going to suspase them SNSD sold sbout 80,000 copies. And that's a huge amount considering the sales of the weeks before that.

Kara is more popular, the difference between the two is digital sales though. SNSD sells much more with physical copies (and boast their album sales considerable with their tour), while kara sells much more digital. [Not of one song, SNSD hits just has a high usually, Kara just does it much more frequently and stays longer]

I think that a big part of sold albums are bought by international sones that are not in Japan... however KARA doesn't have the huge international fandom(at least not like SNSD)so I assume most of the sales they have in Japan are actually Japanese fans buying.

It is with the repackage (see last line of article), but the original is still selling. It was selling about 4K-5K a week, before the repackage was released (and now we don't know cause they grouped them together.

shipments mark is how much the music stores bought from the suppliers or something like that so yea they sold that many copies to distributors but obviously, not all of them are owned by individuals. i hope my explanation is adequate?

Sales around 730k on Oricon I think, which is pretty good. Good for them but let's be honest here Asian Sones must have bought the album. Some of the online Sones I know bought loads of copies for themselves and for their friends.

763,220 from this week's oricon, and i think it's far from pretty good, not even many established artists in Japan sell that much; let's remember it was the 5th best selling album of the year, for me it's an impressive amount.

And also i don't believe in multiple copies theory, if overseas Sones did that all the time or were a high number of people doing that, their sales numbers in Korea would be similar to their sales in Japan, i actually think that the overseas fans who actually buy copies (or multiple copies) is actually small, but that's my personal theory based on sales difference.
