On December 30th, CNN GO, a website dedicated to Asian tourism, published an article on the top reasons to visit Korea this year. On that list, Big Bang’s upcoming comeback and the “Hallyu Madness” were listed as the 3rd top reason. The article discusses how 2012 is “a good year for K-Pop” and how the upcoming 21st Seoul Music Awards on January 19th is set to be the event of the year.

Other reasons listed in the article included: “Visit Korea Year”, Korea Grand Sale, the opening of the International Finance Center (IFC) in Yeouido, healthy Korean food, and the Yeosu Expo.

In response to the article, netizens have commented:

I agree 100% with the author’s opinions. The top reason why I want to go to Korea is Big Bang.”

Korea is the most interesting country out of all the places I’ve visited.”

People seriously. I love Big Bang but come on, top 3 reason to go to Korea...smh
Number 2 is Korea grand sale: smh even more. It should be the landscape, the food

They are people who have gone to Korea just to see their fav idols in concert. If not BB, it would probably just be kpop in general.

Hell if I had the money and someone to go with me, I would go just to see them in concert or the whole YG Family.

Naming three YG artists in the second sentence of Reason #3 supports this claim haha.

I mostly find all 3 reason silly because they all happen in January-February. Even if they are good reasons to go that leaves 10 other months in the year -- what else draws people in?
It's almost better to list Hallyu/Kpop as it's own reason rather than one group.

... and by Big Bang being in February I mean, like, the new album and upcoming Big Bang Show in the beginning of the year :P

I know a lot of people that have gone to Korea/Japan to see Big Bang or the YG concerts. I def. see it more from VIPs because I think they tend to be older people with jobs that can actually make the trip.

Jeju Island should be #1. Food should be #1.5

Those reasons listed are so lame. If they had said something like "Wonderful Exciting Entertainment! Go watch your favourite kpop group perform" It's not like Big Bang is a group thats SUPER active in Korea anyway. :/

As much as I would love to see my favorite idols, what are the chances of seeing them even if you do make it to Korea? I want to go to the erotic sculpture garden, and Pyeonghwa Nuri Park to see the hill made of pinwheels.

guilty ok
Yes my first trip was Rain focused, I was on a deadline. Once I got there I was like woah 2 nights with Rain and the rest was 10x more amazing. Kpop and entertainment as a whole should make you interested but if that's yout sole reason for going. One should stay their ass home. JS The only time Kpop entered my mind while there is when I was jammed on a subway up against an ad or walked into a shop that had some overly glossy cutout of some idol shoved in the corner. It's not like there is a red Kpop idol rug greeting you at the airport. I We see the fans and enjoy this "world" but it's not all kpop this and kpop that over there. This YG love is getting out of control. CNN really :/ you have failed.

I'm guessing they're trying to build on Big Bang's popularity and promote the country more using that but even though I have a number of groups I would LOVE to see there are way more things about Korea I'd love to visit for. Even if I never saw any of my favourite artists I doubt I would find it a wasted trip in any sense.

People are gonna want to visit a country for whatever interests them about that country

If people wanna go to Korea to see their idols it doesn't mean they won't enjoy other things, it just means that that's what brought them there

and as long as they're spending money, I don't think anyone really cares

Heck, people come to Florida to go to theme parks for God's sakes!

Everyone always comes back from S. Korea talking about the food. My cousin goes to visit her mom, and she actually hates it; She loves eating there, though.

I traveled to London to see Harry Potter's thang, so... it happens. I have family there, though, so I only paid for the ride. I wouldn't have done it otherwise.

if you're going to korea solely for concerts, then it is dumb. Since you're already there, it is better to incorporate fangirling into your visit along with say food, shopping, cultural sites and landmarks, that way you maximize the money and time you spent.

Seriously? It would never come to my mind that I want to go to Korea just because of Big Bang or any other Idol group.
I mean I love them and K-pop kinda introduced me to Korea but they'll never be a reason why I want to visit the country.

If that's the sole reason people wanna go, I don't think we should judge them.
Of course they should go for other reasons and to broaden their horizons etc etc but heck, at least they're leaving their damn country!
There are so many people out there that don't even want to show an interest in different cultures it's disconcerting so at least people who are willing to travel just to see their bias are being pro-active.

Most of the time, it's the case of come for x and stay for errrthang else, nay?
