SNSD’s
maxi single, “The Boys,” was introduced as the first pick of the year on U.S.-based radio station, KIIS-FM. Featured in the weekly “JJ Music Monday” segment, KIIS-FM described the single as, “The new maxi single has 8 tracks and features remixes and features from big time artists including Snoop and Clinton Sparks.

It went on to talk about K-Pop as a whole, quoting its Assistant Program Director and Music Director, Julie Pilat. She said, “The K-pop movement…has been spreading like wildfire worldwide thanks to Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube; Girls Generation is definitely a group to keep an eye on for 2012.”

“K-pop is an interesting phenomenon. In South Korea talent agencies go into the schools, find talent, and make them part of an apprenticeship program. Over several years the talent agencies nurture girl groups, boy bands, and solo artists in the K-pop industry overseeing the lives and careers of trainees through choreography, vocal lessons, and studying multiple languages while attending school,” she added.

SNSD is scheduled to release their special album on January 17 in the U.S., Canada, the UK, and France, which includes the Korean and English remix versions of “The Boys.” You can read the full post here.

I just don't see how this single is going to do well. It's all well and good releasing a song in Korea about how awesome SNSD are and how they bring the boys out, etc, but they aren't well known in other countries. The song works in Korea because they're SNSD and their fans think they're goddesses. I think releasing a different song overseas would have introduced them to the international market better.

That's just my opinion though. Maybe they'll prove me wrong?

Umm who? I think only a handfull speak multiple languages. 98% of the groups flocking to Japan can't even speak that language.

studying and actually being able to speak anotherlanguage fluently are two different things. i think a lot of the idols are studying english and japanese. and some have to learn chinese. so they are studying multiple languages.

This isn't really big news though. Getting a station to play your record isn't that hard if you have the money for it. They could always pay major radio stations and djs / to get airplay as what all labels do. To drop a record or spin a track a song to radio, record labels pay the radio stations. 6-10am block, 2-6, 3-7, and 6-10pm blocks are the higher end price, and the 10-2 or 11-3 are lower end price wise. For most popular local stations the introductory fee is anywhere between starts off around $25 thousand to drop a record and that's just for 10-2pm block or unless you have a damn good relationship (meaning you pay them) with a popular dj.

Once "The Boys" gets spin and if people like and it starts getting regular play on the local/national market, than they talk about this. If not, it's really not that newsworthy.

From: [identity profile] omen1x2.livejournal.com
I agree completely. Hell, JYJ were played on stations in Los Angeles during their worldwide tour, and yet no one seemed to care. I don't really see how this'll make any difference.

lol and we saw how far Tokio Hotel went with the US market.

Kpop is a niche market as far as the US is concerned. No major US record label are really going to invest in this "niche" for the US unless has massive nationwide/international appeal and they'll multiply their return in investments.

I swear Korea media likes to make big deals out of the smallest things/recognition.

let's be real. when is comes to Asian, the US doesn't really care. They are the most underrepresented ethnic/racial group outside of Asia. So KPOP is going to always be a "niche" market of a few hundred thousands fans instead of hundred millions in the US/Canada and European markets.

I don't get why people are saying that "The Boys" can't be big because of the lyrics. If songs with lines line, "Do you ever feel like a plastic bag?" can be number one singles in the US, so could "The Boys". I think the failure will come more from promotion than lyrics.

The chance that snsd becomes major in the u.s. is slim and sm knows that, which is why despite giving this u.s. debut major effort (working with u.s. producers, doing some p.r.), they aren't shipping snsd to the states anytime soon and aren't wasting a huge amount of money by writing them an album full of English songs. Of course, the quality of dubois and its remixes are to be questioned, but if we work offthe assumption that theydidnt want togamble more, they did well with what they had.

Still hate the phrase maxi album and song choice tho. Genie would've been great, and oh would've been a lovely Japan debut piece.

SMe they missed the boat with how much OH! and a Disney collab could have taken them. even if they started with Asia Disney, during that time Disney US was highlighting other Disney channels around the world. and SNSD wouldn't not have had to change their image, cute would have gotten them further with Disney.

The only way a "kpop" act will succeed here is if they sort of start from the ground up. I feel like marketing them as "international supastars coming to takeover the US" gives people too many expectations or makes them role their eyes. The marketing should be more humble if that makes any sense.
