A new “faceless” ballad singer, U, is causing quite the stir in Korea with the sultry MV teaser for her new song, “Suddenly“(울 컥). The teaser clip was released on numerous online music sites this past weekend and has garnered a lot of attention due to the girl on girl lip action in the clip. Although the controversial MV may have the caught the eyes of many netizens, the “faceless” singer’s crisp vocals were also able to catch the ears of the netizens, triggering the curiosity of many. I decided to do a little research on this “faceless” singer because her voice sounded so familiar, and it turns out that U isn’t so “faceless” after all.
Back in 2004, the mysterious singer actually sang a song called “Miracle“ for the SBS program, “I like Sunday-Banjun Drama,” under the name of May (not to be mistaken for MayBee).
Looks like U and her company chose a very good marketing tactic this time around because her lesbian concept has allowed her to shed her old image, or what little image she had. Sure, there’s been groups in the past that have used this concept and failed, but it looks like U incorporated the concept well with her new ballad track and this has allowed her to gain more attention in the past few days than she has in the past five years. Here’s a clip of the MV teaser of the song “Suddenly” , which will be released as a mini-album on July 7th.

Date: 2009-06-23 03:03 am (UTC)You know what, if someone wants to make a gay storyline in the MV, they should do it. Same for a straight storyline. Who cares if it's 'trendy' or not? Who cares if the singer is a lesbian. It really shouldn't make an impact on the overall quality of the singer/video, which seems pretty good IMHO.
That being said, anything that exposes to Koreans the fact that 'hey! there really ARE gay people here...' is a step in the right direction to me.
