IU the pig strikes fear into fangirls' hearts

She may be the nation's sweetheart now, but singer IU confessed that in the past, she had received harsh criticism while singing on stage.

On the episode of SBS TV 'Strong Heart' that aired on December 27th, IU shared a story about a time she wanted to cry on stage.

"There were two times in life where I wanted to cry," she said. Once was during her debut stage. It was a day where a lot of boy groups were performing, and a lot of girl fans were there to cheer the boys on. It was these girls that began yelling harsh things to IU. "Once one person started, all of them began joining her," she continued, thinking back to that day. IU was only sixteen [15 int'l age] when she debuted and still had a lot of baby fat on her face, and she revealed that the girls in the audience called her a pig.

"The 3-minute song felt so long and regardless of whether or not I was popular, I thought they would listen to my song, but that wasn't the case," she said. "After that incident, I'm not discouraged even if the audience is silent after my performance. I am strengthened by the quiet sounds of cheers."

That's horrible. Poor IU must have been terrified having her debut with people screaming insults at her.
Mia was the song that first got me interested in IU's singing, and it's not an easy song to sing (much less for a debut in a "hostile" environment). I'm glad what happened made her stronger, though. I can't believe you can actually hear people hatefully shrieking insults at her throughout the song, though :\

i remember when she debuted, alot of people were spreading false rumours about her getting plastic surgery and being a bully... but i didn't pay much attention because they had no backing evidence and what mattered to me was that she had such a breath-taking voice and her mini album was gorgeous, haha~

They're definitely eating their words now, but it's kind of ironic that it's people like them, among others, that caused IU to change from the sad ballad, true singer style to the cutesy style that was the norm. And that transformation gradually led her to who she is today. I think it would've been great if she stuck to who she was during her debut days, but she may have not had as much success as she does now... So perhaps, in the end, they helped her?
