With YG Entertainment’s recent entry into the Korean stock exchange market, more specifically known as the Korean Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (KOSDAQ), it has amped up its rivalry against an equally well-known label and one of the pillars of K-Pop: SM Entertainment.

With competition culminating to its very height, especially with the year-end music award ceremonies just a few weeks away, the two giants of Korea’s music industry should be briefly examined in its achievements over the past year. To start off, SM Entertainment houses some very familiar names in the K-Pop world with f(x), Super Junior, DBSK, and SNSD to name just a few.  However, YG matches this with Big Bang, 2NE1, and Gummy, along with a wide range of talented musicians.

Now, regarding album sales, YG takes the lead in sales online, with more people downloading YG Artist’s songs, but offline, SM  Entertainment has the upper hand with people buying more of their Compact Discs (CD’s).

Starting with YG, from January 2011 to November 2011, the top 50 hit singles chart contains more than 10 YG songs every month;  this accumulates to 20% of every top 50 song coming from this label. For example, the song “Hyped Up” by GG (the group formed  by Park Myung Soo and G-Dragon for Infinity’s Challenge’s Song Festival) was written and produced by G-Dragon wrote and  featured Park Bom’s vocals and ranked 2nd place of the month of July. Furthermore, Park Bom’s solo song “Don’t Cry” ranked 4th  overall in April and her group 2NE1 qualified for 5th with their hit-single “Lonely” in May.

Now with SM Entertainment, their singer’s placed high as well, with f(x)’s “Danger” placing 6th in the top 50 charts in April while their “Hot Summer” ranked 23rd in June. However, the remainder of SM’s artists, such as DBSK, Super Junior, and SNSD failed to enter the top 50 range digitally.

However, this is where it starts to get interesting- the artistsmentioned above who failed to enter the online charts’ top 50 garnered a heavy amount of success offline, accumulating 30% of the top 20 albums sold by retailers, which means that on average, more than 100,000 albums were sold by SM Entertainment. In particular, three SM artists managed to achieve an astounding 200,000 records sold by November. In YG’s case, Big Bang and 2NE1 hold the front very well, with both groups familiar with the top spot on music  rankings and record sales, with Big Bang’s fourth album massing over 100,000 CD’s sold.

More specifically, this difference in popularity online and offline regarding album sales and the resulting contrast with the two labels comes down to strategy. Indeed, YG Entertainment’s 2NE1 employed the tactic of releasing a digital single within the span of every month, thereby ensuring each song’s placement in the top 10 of music streaming sites thus maintaining their popularity. And yet,  SM Entertainment deployed Super Junior’s well-anticipated album (the last one released a year-and-a-half ago) which led to over  300,000 records being sold. Even with this huge landmark, the group quickly released their repackage album which massed  130,000 CD’s sold. This tactic was again used by SM’s DBSK, which again reaped financial awards as well a soaring in popularity.

Of course, just with a mere comparison of the online/offline sales of the two recording companies does not mean the superiority of  one over the other can be fully concluded. There are many factors to be taken into account in order to fully comprehend the  influence and might of both YG and SM Entertainment, one being the Hallyu wave. With K-Pop now reaching overseas, both labels  have managed to accumulate over 7 – 9 million U.S. dollars in sales from concerts, fan meetings, and of course, record sales. Rivals being rivals, these two giants of K-Pop will no doubt collide once again in 2012, with new groups, new songs, and new  surprises waiting just around the corner.

this.

and besides, they have different genres. sme is more pop/r&b, while yge is more hiphop. they have different audiences.

Oooooohhhhh, which artists from SM have r&b music? The only thing that comes to mind is possibly SHINee's first album, but if SME has put out more music like that, I'd like to know about it.

the r&b songs are usually the songs in the album that they rarely perform. although dbsk promoted before u go. which i think is very 90s r&b. suju has y in their current album. although it's more r&b lite, i think. sorry sorry answer, too. s&m the ballad's songs are pretty much r&b. and i think in snsd's repackage of oh! they had an acoustic/r&b version of 별별별 (☆★☆).

I'm assuming you're already aware b/c of your icon but DBSK definitely (No?, Honey Funny Bunny, etc.). Probably CSJH too but I'm not familiar with their catalog. SJ or SNSD probably have a handful as well but I don't really listen to either of them. SHINee definitely does past the first album like on Romeo (Talk to You, Hit Me) and Lucifer (Love Pain). JYP is more the R&B company imo but they're not really part of this discussion lol

yeah, if i were to categorize the three companies, sme is definitely more pop, jype r&b, and yge hiphop. although all three dabble with dance music now, i think.

yeah they have to crossover for diversity's sake and their different groups tend to fit different niches but in the most generalizing way that's basically how it breaks down for me

JYP is more the R&B company ???

Are you sure? perhaps a little before but definitely not now

of the three, yes. imo they all put out pop/dance music first and foremost but park jin young will always have a raging boner for rnb music. 2PM's releases from this year and last had quite a few rnb tracks. when 2AM doesn't have straight ballads they have rnb songs. when I hear a song like "help me" or "my list" it's like damn SWV could have sung this, like he comes from a more "purist" orientation as a songwriter. so that's my reasoning. YG obviously is too (I mean Big Bang started out as a B2K copy) but they are more known for their hip hop imo.

True, but I think that JYPE need to take a rest now, 2pm and WG last albums were not very good.I though YB was mixed the first time I saw the MV, I missed his old style :-(

lol I think Wonder Girls had the best kpop album of the year. 2PM... idk what is going on with them. They've been in a weird place for a while. I do think JYPE is rly overextended rn but they can't really take a break if they want to maintain/gain back their position in the industry.

and yeah a lot of people thought that lol. by old style do you mean his hair/clothing or music?

I didn't listen to the WG last album to be honest, "irony" was the only song that I really like from them, the other looks all the same for me. Don't let me started with 2pm...

About YB: Clothings/hair (hate the blond think in his hair now), he looks so good in hip hop style. I really don't like his actual style (skinny jeans, glasses, always in black...)

lol you said it wasn't good w/o listening to it? k.

he def could use a change. He's kinda top heavy already so when he wears big jackets + skinny jeans he looks so unbalanced. I think all of YG needs a style overhaul tbh. They all look like they robbed a karmaloop in 2008

I can only speak the truth~ I'm proud I can say that objectively too lol. I can't wait til they start broadcasting "Girls Girls" performances ;~; did you see this fancam http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kf3bbtk9h7w I wanna cry tbh

omg i love this song so much
i kinda wish they pulled a yg and promoted multiple songs off their album
it's so good and be my baby performances do nothing for me

From: [identity profile] pivotandsway.livejournal.com
I heard they're doing "girls girls" and/or "stop!" this week and "me, in" for the gayos. they probably have a BMB Xmas version too lol. Pulling a YG is kind of tacky but when your whole album is so solid it doesn't make sense to waste the other tracks in favor of what is arguably the least compelling one. but they're very busy too so w/e happens happens

i really hope to hear stop live favorite from the album
i just wish JYP would give the fans more you know
like goodbye baby performances got old really quickly and hearing mr. johnny live would have been awesome. and same with 2PM with hands up it was god awful and it would have been nice if the fans got to see something else

From: [identity profile] pivotandsway.livejournal.com
yeah he needs to at least throw out a remix soon (not the one on the album). I think they'd get better sales if they could perform different songs too but idk how those rules work and coming up w/ choreo for multiple songs is pretty difficult on top of all the appearances and events. Most songs get kind of old after a couple of weeks too what with like 4 performances each week minimum. I'm just thankful he gave WG an album full of new songs and not the half and half treatment miss A & 2PM got this year.

Omg yes. Mr. Johnny would be an epic performance.
And I feel like if JYP doesn't see a group instantly liked, he'll push them aside like 2am, until they break out.

FTTS is the only thing that cross my mind, it's sad that JYPE,SM and YG used to produce good album and 2-3 filler tracks. Now it's 1-2 good song and filler tracks.

Date: 2011-12-13 09:58 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] askbask.livejournal.com
It's pretty simple. SM's big groups have some of the most hardcore fan clubs who ensure huge physical album sales, while among YG' artists only Big Bang get that. Meanwhile, particularly with the SM boy bands, there's less of an impact among casual listeners. f(x), on the other hand, sell well digitally but with less zealous core fans, and SNSD gets both (The Boys was released late November, with the top 50 chart references only counting to the end of November. It will of course be in the final chart).

I think the fanclubs are really the only thing keeping sm alive right now. the past few years, the quality of releases/music/mv's has been getting shittier and shittier but the fanclubs continue to eat it up because of support for ~oppa and unnie. without that, i doubt suju and girls gen would even make it into the top 10.

Date: 2011-12-13 05:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] askbask.livejournal.com
Not true, really. I mean, for SuJu, maybe, since a vast majority of their sales are physical. SNSD rank highly on digital charts each year as well, they're popular among core fans and mainstream audiences. And I don't think their music has gotten shittier - it's gotten better. Videos are bad, but don't matter that much.

About the quality of music and mv's and the shittiness, I can say the same for YG artist (but then again, it almost applies to a lot of music around the world).

idk both follow a similar formula

(some talent) + (pretty faces) + (everything you can do to make them look different than their natural beings) + (americanized pop music) = $$$
