Nela goes K-Pop
What, you haven't heard about K-Pop before? Don't worry, we haven't heard about "Korean Pop" before neither. ProSieben-MC Nela Panghy-Lee, who's Korean herself, went to the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMAs) in Singapore and got us into K-Pop.
Korean Artist like Kim Hyung Joong, Miss A, Super Junior and Girls' Generation may not be very popular in Germany yet, but there were young and old fans on the Red Carpet at the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2011 to get a glimpse of them. Since the earlier 90s and Singer Seo Taiji K-Pop went from just a music genre to a Phenomen with million of fans by now. So it's no surprise that the MAMAs 2011 don't cause a furor not only in Asia, but were also broadcasted in seven other countries.
Right in the middle of the K-Pop excitement: MC and Twitter-Icon Nela Phangy-Lee, who went to Singapore with a camera crew to get a impression of K-Pop. And to cause trouble. Cause her question what he thinks about german girls got Kim Hyun Joong at the press conference flustered. But at the big show at the Indoor-Stadium the Korean Pop Star was back to his professionel self and happy about his award for best male artist.
You can get a look of Nela Pangy-Lee's own impressions of the MAMAs, the press conference and her shopping-tour in Singapore at our gallery. For more information and moving pictures tune in to taff on Prosieben on Thursday, the 8th of december at 5 PM.

Nela doing a interview with Nigel, a huge fan of K-Pop Band Girls' Generation. His biggest wish: A girlfriend that looks like Yoona.
She, her stylist Eva and her camera crew were a huge attraction in Singapore. These school girls wanted to take a picture with them so bad.
The girls of Girls' Generation were the highlight of the press conference before the MAMAs.
The questions from asian reporters were mostly about tourdates, their impression of Singapore and their excitement of the MAMAs. Until Nelas question...
She asked Kim Hyun Joong what he thinks of german girls - and caused a stir.

first of all IM SO SORRY IF THE TRANSLATION SOUNDS HORRIBLE AND WRONG but a) im not good at translating from german to english (i also left out some sentences) and b) i translated it in a hurry.
i freaked out when i saw this on twitter and thought "oh god not another fail article about k-pop from germany" (anyone remembers the article from popcorn, the german magazine?) but im surprised, the article is actually really good and it seems that the writer has some knowledge about kpop. anyways im so gonna watch taff at thursday, i can also try to record it and put it on youtube. however i wonder how this will turn out.. like i said before germany is not really into girl- and boybands so i dont know if this is the start of the hallyu wave in germany or not. but anyways, i just wanted to share this with you guys. if you find some grammar mistakes please feel free to correct me ^_^
and just asking, am i the only one who cant visit LJ at the moment? i can only visit it with my phone and with a proxy :( (thank god for youtubeunblocker.co.uk, i worship this site.)

And yes, that Popcorn article. We can be glad they at least brought a SHINee poster, plan to bring a Big Bang poster tomorrow and in the latest issue was a SMALL part about JYJ holding the concert in Berlin.

Date: 2011-12-06 09:52 pm (UTC)I adore kpop but everyone I show it to here just doesn't get it. They're either too busy being hipster or just clinging on to worn out labels, idk.
The BBC and Guardian have sort of clocked on though.

Date: 2011-12-06 08:44 pm (UTC)You know stuff like that really awful Popcorn article and the general German fanbase always puts me of K-pop in Germany (by which I mean K-pop getting more widely known in Germany).
And I'm kind of afraid of that taff report because it is... well, taff.
Basically, I really want K-pop to stay in Korea (and maybe Japan) and watch it from afar. Maybe I'm in the minority with this, but I partly like K-pop because it is so far away and has almost nothing to do with my life. It's like a fantasy world that I can escape into, only that this fantasy world really exists.
Another thing is that I can hardly see K-pop being succesful in Europe at all. Except maybe for a few months, a year or something. It would be the new hip thing and then be forgotten pretty quick. (Which is still more than the potential for succes I see in America, which is... none imo.)

actually it depends on who does the voice over. the woman usually gets the good reports and the guy the "you know" ones
but i think nela wants to show the good sides of kpop so hopefully it wont be as bad as their other stuff

Date: 2011-12-06 08:53 pm (UTC)i kind of agree, but it has way more chance getting popular in europe, GB really, than america, which is where all groups are shooting for, other than japan i guess.
honestly, i don't care about kpop's popularity in anywhere but asia, but it'd be nice of they held concerts in europe or the americas (and africa i guess) where there are thousands, literally, of fans that want to see their favorites live and in flesh, what little there is.

Date: 2011-12-07 01:24 am (UTC)I can't understand fans promoting and trying to get it mainstream, most of the time it never ends in good light, the feedback isn't so welcoming (what do they expect, no one takes jumping fangirls seriously to begin with) and that's just how it is. Big part of the world is not ready, it will remain "underground".

Date: 2011-12-07 02:54 pm (UTC)Well, but it looks like that Nela is really making an effort to present a good report.
I guess I've already said that various times but tbh I don't want KPop to become popular in Germany,
since everything Asian for the majority is Sailor Moon, Chopsticks and ching chang chong.
(and I feel like that many German KPop fans are delusional little kids, who know nothing about KPop's 'dark side')
I'd love to keep it as my own "secret world" however I'd love to have them a few concerts here.
fucking dilemma.
