All female group 2ne1's debut Japanese single didn't manage to catch on last week. Though the song, GO AWAY (JAPANESE VERSION) had been out in Japan since earlier this year, it failed to garner much interest from the Japanese public. Even to the millions who watched the morning program, MezamashiTV to which it was the theme for some odd months. Peaking at the number nine spot, the single managed to sell just over 13,000 copies to slot in its place at number 12 on the weekly Oricon charts.
Their debut mini album also failed to live up to expectations. Though the group reportedly took in millions from the 70,000 fans who attended their NOLZA live tours, the sales fell quite short of the number of reported attendees. It can still be noted and celebrated that 2ne1 managed to surpass AKB48's three week old single.
According to Oricon, 2ne1 has since fallen out of the Daily Top 30.

wtf with these numbers? really thought they'd proper blow up in japan with this one!

Even Big Bang only did one remake before releasing new Japanese material.

This big talk and promotion but small result do nothing but making BJ's delusional and non-fans laughing at them (the fans and 2NE1)

Date: 2011-11-25 05:39 am (UTC)tbh, I wonder if it might be 2NE1's image. I'm not expert, but when I think of big female stars in Japan, I get 3 categories
1) cutesy and girly, and nonthreatening (eg:AKB48)
2) sexy and mature but very feminine (Namie Amuro, Koda Kumi, etc)
3) serious artist/singer-songwriter types (Utada Hikaru, ayaka, Onitsuka Chihiro, Tomiko Van)
They're too wild to be in the cutesy category, don't really work the femme-fatale angle (Bom's the only one who regularly wears dresses/skirts I think), and don't bill themselves as the 'serious artist' types. It's not to say that there's not place for them in Japan, but I think it's gonna take more dedicated marketing to settle in to that spot. There's too much Kpop in Jpop right now - they can't rely on that label to sell. If they're not going to fit into an easy existing category in Jmusic, they need to make one.
