If asked to describe each other’s strengths, Yunho says that Changmin’s eyes are pretty, while Changmin says that Yunho’s nose is good-looking. Although Yunho is lively and gets along well with people, and he even jokes around often, Changmin is of an introverted and meticulous personality. Once in a while, if Yunho is making jokes randomly, Changmin will cluck his tongue and nag. But even so, when Yunho leads Changmin as an elder brother, Changmin wordlessly leans/relies on Yunho. The two different people who have not one thing in common. However, what is really amazing is that when they talk about becoming TVXQ and their music or futures, they always show off a concerted singular voice.
“This is an album we put in a lot of effort and thought into. Of course creating a high standard in musical aspect is a must, but this is also an album we produced with a thankful heart towards the fans who had waited for us.”
Last January, since they released their album "Why (Keep Your Head Down)" and commenced activities as a duo TVXQ, nearly a year has gone by. Last September, they released a new album called “TONE” in Japan and immersed themselves into full-scale Japanese activities. TVXQ’s photos were plastered all over bus terminals, subways, and bustling streets in the city centers. As soon as the album went on sale, over 100,000 copies were snapped up, rising to the #1 position on the daily album rankings. That number bore no relation to the number of members, and TVXQ’s power still remained the same as before. After fending off the worries and anticipation of many people, TVXQ has returned.
Yunho – “To us, Japan is a country inscribed with the two words “beginner’s heart”. When TVXQ first debuted in Japan, it was during a time when we had already bagged Daesangs (highest accolades in music awards) in Korea. When many people were thinking that we had already risen to the top, we started again from the bottom in Japan as rookies. Perhaps, because of this, only when I come to Japan will the anxiety as rookies subconsciously emerge.”
The albums TVXQ released in 2011 carry an even greater significance. This is because rather than seeing them merely as albums, therein lies the meaning of repaying the domestic fans who had persevered and waited for them all these while. The album released in Japan, “TONE”, was also their first album to go on sale in Japan since they became a 2-membered TVXQ, so it was a fact that they worried a lot.
Yunho – “This is an album we put in a lot of effort and thought into. Of course creating a high standard in musical aspect is a must, but this is also an album we produced with a thankful heart towards the fans who had waited for us.”
Changmin – “In order to be able to convey our feelings and sentiments fully in Japanese, we thought very hard. Of course, singing in a foreign language is also not an easy matter. But even so, I saw it as the least I could do to repay the Japanese fans who had given us love without wavering.”
"Because it has not been that long since TVXQ became two members, in order to find our places, I feel that we have to put on different kinds of hats to try them out."
Other than the Japanese album “TONE”, even in their domestic album “Why (Keep Your Head Down)” before that, TVXQ had already stood out for attempting a variety of genres. Their dance songs with intense beats caused hearts to pound wildly, and they even had strong ballads which showcased the hidden vocal talents of the two members.
Changmin – “It will be great if TVXQ develops a style where we are constantly pursuing evolving forms of music. Personally, when I listen to music, I listen to a variety of genres. However, in order not to become singers who are neither here nor there, it is also very important to achieve a level of mastery (he means that it is also important to not become a “Jack of all trades, but master of none”).”
Yunho – “I feel the same way as Changmin too. I want to attempt a variety of genres. Because it has not been that long since TVXQ became two members, in order to find our places, I feel that we have to put on different kinds of hats to try them out. Right now, this is the situation we’re in, and we will be able to enter into a phase where we can develop, isn’t it?”
Till the extent that they have taken risks with their diversity of music, the scope of TVXQ’s activities are gradually broadening. This is not merely referring to the “SM Town Live in Paris” concert which once heated up the news for spreading the “Hallyu fever”. Sometime back, TVXQ has also received invitations and attended Lacoste show held during the New York Fashion Week. So what are their feelings at venturing out of Asia and capturing fans from other continents with absolutely different features and cultures?
Changmin – “Actually, in Europe or America, there are many great musicians whom we like. In actual fact, about performing in those places, initially I approached the issue carefully. However, after actually performing there and seeing the fans who had memorized the Korean lyrics and were singing together with us, I felt overwhelmed.”
Yunho – “For me, my biggest concern was about what to show to those fans. There are also many people out there who don’t know who we are. I wanted to leave a lasting impression on the people there, and wanted to let them know that we are all the same people in this world.”
While going to so many different countries, TVXQ has also gradually grown through their new experiences and learning new cultures. However, they also need to take a break once in a while. The pressure of needing to show off what sides to the people who have stood by them and waited for them all these while, the aspirations which they have for their own selves, and also the responsibility that they carry in being Hallyu stars. Therefore, they listed Spain as the place which left the greatest impression on them amongst the countries which they have visited recently.
Changmin – “What left the most memories for me was Spain, which we had gone to on a vacation without any official schedule. The food there was also delicious, and after personally trying out the culture of just sitting by and reading a book, I found it really interesting. The people were also friendly and passionate."
Yunho – “The Spain vacation seemed to have been some sort of turning point for me. I did a really huge variety of work this year, having cameo appearances in a drama series, challenging figure skating, going to America to watch fashion shows etc. Although I always have fun every moment while working, after trying out so many different things, I also subconsciously became weary. However, no matter who they are, the Spanish people were just positive and passionate in whatever they were doing. While looking at them, I felt that I also had to become like them. Thinking about it, there is only a fine line to cross (to become like them).”
"It seems like there are more and more groups with the same look gradually appearing under the name of Hallyu. It will be great if we can work together with musicians who showcase a more diverse variety of music to lead the Hallyu wave."
Although TVXQ is the name of a group, it is also a Hallyu synonym which represents the symbolism of popular music of one country. In countries with a 4-5 hours distance from Korea, there are no young people who do not know of their existence. When one thinks about Hallyu, it is not unusual to find the name “TVXQ” naturally popping up.
Changmin – “It seems like there are more and more groups with the same look gradually appearing under the name of Hallyu. From a commercial perspective, because the essential factors for success have been have decided, this is a situation which is inevitable. It will be great if we can work together with musicians who showcase a more diverse variety of music to lead the Hallyu wave. No matter what, if one continues showing off the same things, people will get sick of them easily. This is also the background against which we decided to attempt different types of music genres.”
Yunho – “For me, I don’t put emphasis on unscrupulously having to expand my popularity. Even if I go to just one country, I want to truly understand the culture of that place and I think one must strive to show off a proper image. Should we adopt a strategy of localizing Korean songs to adapt? In continuing relations with that country, we should slowly, in an orderly fashion, establish a foundation in that country, isn’t it? Because it is only through this way that one can continue on in that country.”
"It seems like my driving force to plan or carry out something is a little lacking. However, if one lives without being too ambitious and being contented with the current state, a cool future is bound to surface one day, isn’t it?”
What exactly are the dream futures that these youths, who think so earnestly of Hallyu and the future of Korea’s popular music?
Changmin – “Ah, this is my complex (this is used to mean their “weak point”). I still don’t know definitively what I want, and I also don’t have a future which I have already mapped out in a clear manner. It seems like my driving force to plan or carry out something is a little lacking. However, if one lives without being too ambitious and being contented with the current state, a cool future is bound to surface one day, isn’t it?”
Yunho – “My goal is to get married one day and build a nice family. And I also want to run schools or facilities for social welfare. In addition, TVXQ is able to reach this position today because many people have given us strength and opportunities. It’ll be great if I could pass on the numerous opportunities and help I’ve received to other people. And the most important thing is that I want to be a good father.”
While conducting the interview, I suddenly developed this thought. Aren’t these youths whom I’m facing right now the big stars who have approximately 800,000 fans in the whole world? They are precisely the TVXQ who have created a Guinness record for having the most fans in the whole world. However, I didn’t notice that fact at all. This is precisely because even though they carry that title (of having the most fans in the world), they are still as polite as ever, and they still do their best no matter what. It is undoubtedly a proud thing, and a fact that makes me feel good, that the youths who carry on their backs a portion of Korea’s popular music are so humble and cool.

Yunho: "I had a different and interesting experience. It was during my first official schedule in New York. I reached Manhattan first, and at that time, there were many fans there so I was taken aback. Although I was, expectedly, unfamiliar with the collection, because I learnt more in a new area, it was a pleasant and fulfilling time. It was my first time seeing foreign models like that, but even so, I still think Korean girls are the prettiest."

Changmin: "Because it was my first time viewing the collection, it was a novel experience. The attention from the glamorous show venue and from so many people was all focused on us. It was a relief that we met reporters who had interviewed us before in Japan, so I felt a little more reassured. And as the time gradually passed, as I gradually calmed down, I also got used to it."

It's kind of heartbreaking that they keep having to start again from scratch. First building up their name in Japan from success in Korea and then, just as they begin to peak in Japan, having to redefine their entire music style and format of the group ): But hopefully that's made them all stronger
Randomly, I am confused by the lady next to Changmin's choice of footwear in the last pic. Thongs (flip-flops in American XD;) to a fashion show? Is that common? o_O

Date: 2011-11-17 01:08 pm (UTC)I find the image of Changmin relaxing with a book so heartwarming and youthful yet powerful somehow. Yunho was right to liken him to the sea: sometimes calm, sometimes fierce, but always deep. And for someone so free-spirited, Yunho really likes to follow the self-written script for his life to the letter. On a less serious note, I can't believe Yunho followed up with how he thinks Korean girls are prettiest when he so obviously spent more time observing the male models on the runway.
