There was stuff about the government funding the Hallyu in to Japan. And stuff about them paying people to go to airports and stuff. I can't remember but it wasn't good.
Also, I gotta lol @ people saying fuck off to the BBC in the Youtube comments and being angry about manufactured comment. Kpop is manufactured, at least when it comes to idols.
The singing groups and whatnot are more like excellent performers than musicians.
They may sing the song and dance the dance, but not many of them actually contribute to song writing, the dance moves, or production.
I think the farthest they ever go in terms of creative content is like making up lyrics for one song in their album or something. Or writing a thank you note in the album booklet. Nothing actually critical.
... see I do like kpop sometimes... I've known it since it was born in the 90s, maybe 80s though it was all hokey music back then...
and I'm not totally sure why it's internationally such a big deal either, since it's been the same kind of music for the past 10 years over and over and over promoted by some pretty and then some other pretty girl and so on and so forth.
I dunno.
Might as well enjoy the popularity while it lasts, because unless korea's music learns to change, it's not going to last forever.
I mean Hallyu is slightly overhyped and the gov't does take a bit too much interest in it, but how is it different than say what America has been doing with its cultural exportation for decades. Also, I want to see the rest of the BBC report.
It's really interesting to me how the government manufactured this for soft power and how effective its becoming. I don't really think it's such a bad thing either. Honestly, I didn't know much about Korean culture before the Hallyu wave but it hasn't distracted me from learning more politically or historically significant aspects or S.Korea. It kinda just acts as a lure imo.
verrrry good points made by these videos, tbh, some i had not considered on my own.
on a less serious note, i am anxious for when/if kpop becomes more well known in the US (acknowledged on mtv, etc.) because i know 3/4 of americans will be like WTFFFFF??? and remember me mentioning that i listen to it. up until now, i liked having kpop be my secret little obsession, and even if i happen to mention it no one knew what i was referring to. ya know? idk.
Can someone hook me up with a longer version of first video (second one was posted here like months ago). Anyhow, I don't really see much of bad in government helping in promotion of kpop. Also US is much worse in this aspect than SK ever. It would be different story if SK forced the song lyrics be about praise of their president or something like North Korea does. But as of now their songs are just like pop songs throughout the world. In fact I think my own country should learn from SK. Maybe Nokia phones would sell more if Finnish rock/pop/tv series/movies were more popular outside Finland.

I hope this helped for now until you're able to watch the vids ^^;
