This is a Block B Interview
2011-11-03 08:19 pmDo You Wanna B? Free Style Block B!

The birth of Korea's first ever hip hop idols was enough to stimulate my curiosity. The combination of hip hop and idols: it was a shock factor unseen in the stereotypical world of the Korean music industry. But because they stood in the hazy division between underground and mainstream, the listeners were more than critical of Block B. Instead of being intimidated by that, however, Block B confidently spat out that they would "show something greater than your imaginations through rap, dance, and performance."
The fact that we were trying to uphold them to the standards of underground and mainstream was a contradiction in itself. With an average age of 20 years old, the members said what they wanted to when they wanted to and expressed everything they had without hesitation. Instead of letting themselves be boxed in to the standards that surround them, they know nothing but their love for their music, which is the very foundation of who they are: confident, free-spirited men that don't know how to "act fake."

Chapter. 1: Birth of Block B
Produced by Cho PD, the seven member Blockbuster group debuted amidst much anticipation on April 15th. With a powerful hip hop track titled "Wanna B" at the helm, they went on to capture attention with electro hip hop sounds like "Freeze!" and "Tell Them".
They're categorized as traditional hip hop, which is often stereotyped to be dark, depressing music that's aggressive and critical of society. But just because they call themselves hip hop doesn't mean they have to adhere to such stereotypes. Still, netizens couldn't help but commenting, "Were all of the headlines claiming them to be traditional hip hop fake?"
Block B retorted, "There was only one song in our album that we considered 'traditional hip hop'. Hip hop music is our base but we don't want to enclose ourselves in a specific genre. We go for 'all-around' music."
The members revealed that since their debut, they have had no regrets, but could rather measure how much each of them grew since then. They were, at first, a four member group with full musical potential, but found themselves a seven member idol group walking a path different from their hopes of differentiating themselves from the concepts of other idols.
Instead of being held up on their past, however, Block B managed to overcome it by now working on showing their true colors through their upcoming January album release.

Chapter. 2: The Boys! Boys!
When asked to introduce themselves in idol-fashion, we got a flurry of unique titles like rapper, producer, nagger, and leader Zico, super dancing machine B-Bomb, the sub vocal Jaehyo that does aegyo no one likes, the main vocalist Taeil, 'sagaek' Park Kyung, smile representative U-Kwon, and explosive charisma maknae P.O.
[ZICO] Rapper Zico is the team's leader and producer; his real name is Woo Jiho. At the time of his debut, he gave a powerful impression because of his unconventional hair style and aura, but we actually felt a gap with that image and his ability to perform aegyo on the spot while wearing a hoodie with animal ears. When told that he looks different now compared to his debut image, he said, "I really liked the pineapple hair!"
This interview concept asked the boys to draw on the walls around them. With just a few brush strokes, Zico was able to turn a wall into an impressive work of art. I stared at it in awe until the members came up to me and revealed, "Zico majored in art~" Zico has everything it takes to be an artist, it seems.
His role model is Jay-Z, and he's currently addicted to Jester's Pies. The members were also quick to add that he also enjoys walking around the house naked before he goes in for a shower and bothering all of the members.
The members were asked when they considered Zico as their leader, and they said it was when he came out of the shower, stating, "I'm a man~" (The members strongly requested that I add this in the article).
Because he's an artist, he goes through emotional rollercoasters. The team's atmosphere is largely dependent on how Zico's feelings. Still, the members revealed that although they weren't good at giving shy praise, Zico's work still drew out moments of awe from them. "The next album's songs are truly daebak!!"
When asked if he felt any disappointment about crossing over to the mainstream from underground, he replied, "I had no intention of staying underground. I want to be able to pursue the type of music I want freely. For now, I just want to write a more variety of songs."
--
[P.O.] Maknae P.O.'s charm is his husky voice, but he revealed that he's actually sad about it because it makes him look older than he actually is. P.O. just can't seem to stay still, as even when they were taking group pictures, he'd stick his arm into his shirt and make it look as if his heart was beating out of it, or even parody scenes from the 'Exorcist'.
He joked around so much that he was told countless times during the interview to stay quiet... When the other members were asked when they thought P.O. was the prettiest, they replied, "When he's sleeping." Others said, "When he pays." Although he's the maknae, P.O. wants to give everything he has to his hyungs instead of stay on the receiving end.
P.O. nodded his head when the other members exclaimed, "P.O.'s really cute~" According to the members, he looks like Bart from 'The Simpsons', and I think they look 100% alike as well! He has the ability to exhaust you with his jokes and aegyo, and although he's a troublemaker, he's an innocent little boy that is highly affectionate of his hyungs as a 'hyung boy' (tn: play on mama's boy).
At the end of the interview, when everyone was on their way out, P.O. was the last one to stay, cleaning up the pens and papers strewn around the room. He's a cutie troublemaker that you just can't hate!
--
[PARK KYUNG] He calls himself the best and confidently states that he's the group's visual. "I myself am a charm." He's not afraid to talk to strangers and jokes around freely, giving me the impression that he'd survive on any lone island. He's Block B's atmosphere maker and the #1 member the others think would have the most fun at a night club. The only flaw that he has to his "perfect character," or so he says, is that the members call him 'Skunk Park Kyung'. I'll leave that to your imaginations so as to not ruin the image created by his young fangirls.
He also studied abroad in New Zealand in high school, but pursued music as a hobby before that. It wasn't an easy decision to make, but he decided to trust his elementary school friend Zico and join Block B. Although together they bickered back and forth (Kyung complained that he would look short next to Zico, while Zico retorted that it didn't matter because they were sitting anyway), it was obvious to anyone that they were the most comfortable with each other.
When asked what the other meant to them, Zico and Kyung freaked out at the question. Zico replied that Kyung was like the whip that whipped him back into shape when he was tired and at wit's end, while Kyung said that it was because Zico's personality and disposition matched with his that he could join him, despite the differences in their musical opinions.
As if they were a bit shy with their answers, they immediately went back to bickering.
--

[JAEHYO] Upon first glance, it's easy to see that Jaehyo's the visual of the group. He looks as if he doesn't talk a lot, but he's actually the member that fumbles over his words the most. On TV, Block B looks like a powerful idol group that that would never be nervous, but Jaehyo actually had to take pills to relax his nerves before going on stage, and even said that it would be fun to catch the amount of mistakes he made on TV.
His athletic skills on 'Dream Team 2' still left quite the impression, and although he chose his strong will to win as his strength, the members were quick to reveal that he actually had weak legs. Taeil and P.O. especially liked to pick on him, especially during their photoshoot as a trio alone. When he was alone, his tall height and beautiful looks shed his image of being picked on, as he looked more like a model than ever.
He was actually a fitting model before his debut, and he said that he let the members treat him however they like because "they're kids that express what they want, and as the hyung, I can understand and accept all of that~"
He's quite the emotional one, so he's also into romantic movies lately. The other members also chose Jaehyo as the #1 member with the best fashion sense, and as the member that would look best in drag. Jaehyo, the innocent, romantic, and sometimes airheaded man, chose himself for both categories.
--
[TAEIL] Taeil calls himself a peanut but the extent of his true size and power isn't shown until he begins singing. He's already shown his vocal prowess on MBC's survival audition program, 'Birth of a Great Star', and although he wasn't able to come out on top, it was his voice that earned him a love call from his current agency.
The members said more than once about how talented he was and that he practiced more than anyone despite his talent, demonstrating his genuine passion for his craft.
But of course, it wouldn't be Block B to just end the interview on a positive note like this. The members soon began revealing tidbits on Taeil's personality by saying things like, "He's like a stubborn grandpa!"
When asked for an example, they revealed that each of them had changed their hair styles at least once during their promotional period, but Taeil was adamant about keeping his. For about a month, he had to wear a fedora, which backfired because people couldn't tell him apart from the back dancers.
Although he's also a fan of comic books and fish, he also has a tough guy side to him that enjoys riding motorcycles.
--
[B-BOMB] B-Bomb's role model is Rain. After watching him perform on stage in junior high, he began dreaming of becoming a singer.
He stands quiet amidst the noisy and rambunctious members, watching them instead of joining in on their conversation. When he dances, however, he makes a 180 degree transformation into a powerful dancing machine.
The members revealed that he had a habit of going to sleep in one position and waking up in that same exact position. Unlike his cold first impression, B-Bomb is known for taking care of his members well. When Taeil had difficulty picking up on some moves during their choreography rehearsal, B-Bomb would make sure to be by his side and help him through everything.
When asked what was the most memorable thing that had happened to him since his debut, he said that the day before this interview, they were in Buyeo. Despite it being a cold day, fans showed up and cheered loudly, making him both thankful and apologetic.
