Jaejoong’s Mannish Apartment
JYJ’s Jaejoong, who has begun to act not merely in Japan but also in Korea through the recently-finished Protect the Boss, finished the design of the interior despite his busy schedule and moved to a new house. It is a space that mostly preserved the existing finishing material and structure as they were and instead used only styling to make the different-feeling mannish styles of each room stand out.I want a house that does not seem like a house. The house is not a penthouse or a loft but I wish that it will look as if it was a loft in New York. I wish that it would be formed into a space that is citylike yet fun…” Jaejoong, in commissioning the interior design to a designer, explained the scene of the home that he paints with broad strokes in this way. The editor who heard of the news of Jaejoong’s move and the suggestion of the filming of his home from the designer, momentarily hesitated due to the issue of whether an idol entertainer would fit in with Maison. But when the editor heard of the concept of the interior that Jaejoong had wanted, he came to have the greed/desire to introduce Jaejoong’s house through Maison. With that, for about a month in his home the interior work took place. It was a work of “home dressing,” With the exception of the wallpaper, the existing finishing materials were not replaced and the structures were not replaced also. However it required much thought as much as a renovation and also was time-consuming. The marble finish and the extravagant chandelier, the classical wardrobe-closet and such factors were located throughout the house and the question was how to transform the space into a fun and mannish one without getting rid of them. Despite his packed schedule of filming a drama, Jaejoong met with the interior designer and meticulously examined and modified the design draft proposals and picked out the furniture and the props along with the designer. He showed a level of enthusiasm toward interior design to the degree that if there happened to be a moment of free time during his filming, he would visit interior shop by himself to purchase the props. As a result, each space of his home changed into a different style of mannish look and have come to be fitted to evoke interest. And, in this space, I began to talk “house” with the owner of the home, Jaejoong.
Q: What did you like about this home that caused you to move?
When the world tour was over, all members of JYJ came to prepare to move. Yoochun’s mother, who had been house-shopping, saw this and recommended it to me. It is convenient with regards to traffic, has large windows and so gets a lot of light, and I also liked the structure. I felt that in this place, for each of the space I would be able to form it into any composition that I want.
Q: I think that because of the schedule of the drama filming, the move and the interior work could not have been easy. Is there a reason that you pushed all of this through despite the busy schedule?
I plan to live in this house for a long time, and so I thought that I should do some interior work on it before I move in. And I thought that if I did not make up my mind to proceed with it when I move, because I am busy I was likely to just live as it was, and so I told myself not to push it off.
Q: Previously, you’ve also became the talk of the town among the TV broadcasts and newspapers when you posted a photo of your home on Twitter, right? Have you always been interested in interior design? Are you on the side of shopping frequently for interior design as well?
More than having a lot of interest in interior design, I think it is more accurate to say that because it is a place in which I live and since I am usually home when there is no work, I have much affection for my space. The home in which I lived previously, I decorated myself. I had black as the main color and I focused on creating a simple yet manly interior. I was not a pro and so rather than decorating with a specific concept in mind or with a set style, I purchased furniture or props that came into my heart at that moment and decorated. I have many opportunities to go abroad but often it is for concerts or for photo shoots and so I cannot have much personal time when abroad. As such, I come to do most of my interior shopping in Korea. I go to department stores, Furniture Street in Nonhyundong and Furniture Shops in Chungnamdong from time to time, and also sometimes I visit Shimchungdong or the Express Terminal Underground Marketplace. Also when I spot an interior shop that I like while in a car, I immediately stop the car and take a look.
Q: Is there a reason that you consulted a designer instead of doing the interior work yourself?
I thought that if a professional did it, definitely the details would change and I had particularly high expectations for that aspect. When I heard that it will be proceeded with Maison also, I was glad because I felt that the pictures that had been circling in my head while discussing with professionals would be able to be realized in a more sophisticated way.
Q: You said that you wanted a concept such as a home that does not seem like a home, a loft in New York. What kind of a home did you wish it would be, to be specific?
I wished that it would become a home like a “travel map.” I like to be in my home when there is no performance or shooting. Recently, I have come to work on the songs in my home as well before we record. So, instead of having all spaces formed under the same concept, I wanted to have each room be formed in different concepts so that even when I am in my house it would be a place where it is fun and I could do everything that I wanted, as if I was travelling—that is what I requested to the designer.
Q: Now that you have seen the completed home, how is it? Are you satisfied?
Yes, I am satisfied. The things that I had drawn in my head, the points that I wished would be expressed in certain ways—they are all alive throughout the house. And so I think I will live the “hermit” way even more. When my family, the members, and friends from Japan and the colleagues from the company all come and tell me that “the utilization of the space is good and the furniture and the props are also pretty,” I become filled with pride. But above all, the moment in which I feel the most satisfaction is when I am alone. The bedroom is cozy, the living room is comfortable, the small living room is pleasurable, and in my work room I can concentrate…
Q: Where is the space that you like the best?
The small (secondary) living room. I really put in a lot of thought into this one. I wished this place to be a pleasurable space, in which my friends when they come could play games and read comic books. I also asked that I be provided a place in which I could collect the props when I purchase them from when I am abroad. When I told the designer the overall color tone and the style of the sofa and such, the designer suggested a few drafts under the concept of a playroom. Among them, the picture that I liked the best is the current image of here. I also wished that the furniture that would be placed here would have designs that are even more unique and fun. This room has a mix of design pieces that shine in value even when aged and the custom-made furniture that were crafted to fit what I wanted—and that is also what I wanted.
Q: If there are things that you learned anew while decorating your house this time, what are they?
I felt that even when decorating one’s house, the first stage of the work, the establishment of the plan, was the most important. To grasp the particularities of the house, to decide on a concept, and to decide on the specific design—that process was the most important, above all. I also learned that just like fashion, it is not good to over-decorate or to make the colors uniform all over. I also learned that instead of making impromptu decisions time to time because you feel like it then, you should keep to the design you first planned to get a good result.
Q: Since you are so busy, there must have been many difficulties in the process of the interior decoration.
As the process went to the finish line, truly I was so busy. So there were many instances in which I would have to discuss with the designer and the company first, and then be delivered the updated contents and after that decide among the few and then relay it to the designer again. Because of my personality I could not do it half-heartedly. And so sometimes I would come home after filming all night and then have an idea about the interior design come to my head and so tell the designer the idea, or when I would get a few moments while moving between the shoots I would look around an interior shop that I had decided to visit if I had found time. Although I have no time, I have so much that I want to do… This was what was the hardest. But now that I have finished the interior, I feel that it was good that I did it this way. No matter how nicely the home is fitted, what use is it if it is not to my liking?
Q: You said that you usually stay home when you do not have work. When you rest at home how do you spend your time?
When I rest, there are truly so many things to do in my home—I watch a movie in the living room or have a drink on the table out in the balcony. When I go into the work room to work on songs it is quite difficult to come out. When family or friends come over, I cook often for them also.
Q: In Protect the Boss also, there was a scene in which you cooked. Are you truly good at cooking? Now that I’ve looked around, your kitchen system is well-equipped and the cooking equipments such as pans and frying pans are also properly procured.
Because ever since young I’ve lived in a dorm system. When I would cook and spread the table for the members and they eat well, I felt good. Nowadays when I have time I buy the groceries in the downstairs market and cook well for myself as well. I enjoy cooking itself, but more than that I think I like the process of creating and coming to know new things, whatever it may be. Cha Muwon, the person that I took on in the drama, was a character who was significantly different from me, but he had a few points which were similar to mine. One of them was cooking.
Q: Other than cooking, what other hobbies do you have? Now that I’ve seen your bookshelf it seems that you read many novels also.
Nowadays I’ve fallen very much into bicycles. I ride the bicycle every single day and it clears my head and it is great. And as for books I try to read them as much as possible. When I go to bookstores I go to the best seller corner to see what books are popular, and I take that into account in choosing books. I also get a lot of advice from those around me.
Q: As befitting of someone who does music, you truly have a great number of CD’s. As for music, where do you listen to them often?
Living room, balcony, work room—I listen to music wherever I am. I believe that music is connected to everything that I am. When I work on songs often I first meditate for an hour or two while listening to music. As I do so, sometimes I am able to write the lyrics first or sometimes an idea about the song comes up in my head in that moment.
Q: How do you feel about having finished the interior work and also the drama?
In a word, I am happy. This drama was my first project in Korea and because I was so lucky I was able to meet a great number of truly great people and I learned so much while living as Muwon. I cannot forget what Muwon said in the final episode. “I will be a clean corporate man. That road may be hard. Will you be with me?” He said the line while he was proposing, and perhaps because I felt that it was similar to my situation, it is still in my head.
Q: If you have plans for the future, please tell me. And I am curious about your next plans for the home’s interior.
As for the house, rather than changing it significantly I will stick to switching out the props or fabrics according to the season. And if I buy a piece of furniture or prop, I plan to procure things that will not tire even if I use them for a long time but rather shine brighter in value. Around the time that the November issue of Maison comes out, I will be looking ahead for the Spain concert. On October 29 there is a Spain concert and in the beginning of November there is a Germany concert. After I come back having finished the European Tour I think that I will work on creating new songs while resting. I am also preparing a donation project. Not merely I but also all of the members have a great interest in giving. When we give we become happy and I believe that if we show ourselves giving we will have, even if little, a positive impact on many people. I also have much desire to play a variety of characters as an actor. As I did this drama I fell even deeper into the attractiveness of acting. For now, I will concentrate on the JYJ concert and work on the songs, and around next year I want to meet a good project again. My final dream is to become happy with fans as JYJ. It is a bit abstract but this is the biggest dream and goal that I have.
Jaejoong was taking headache pills because he could not sleep at all due to the previous night’s all-night filming, but while the filming of his home was taking place he did not once frown or let out a complaint. When I could not see him and so thought that perhaps he has gone into his room to rest, he was rather doing the final checks on the interior with the designer or organizing the house. Even after the filming was over and all of the staff were telling him to now sleep, he showed us an extraordinary level of energy by saying that it would be better for him to ride the bike and then sleep and accordingly roll out the bicycle from the terrace. “Jaejoong is a home-owner who listens well to the designer and we can really communicate with each other. He has a high level of interest in interior and he is also good in terms of ideas and sensibilities. Despite all of this, he did not project loudly his own voice but rather trusted the designer and I was so able to work with even more pleasure.” Park Changmin, the head of department of Garage which handled the design, said that this project was a pleasurable experience for him as a designer. As for myself, the editor, I also saw sufficiently the affection that Jaejoong poured in to the home as he participated in the dressing of his home that took place over a month. When the work fell short of the concept and the quality that he wanted, he showed a daring side of rejecting the privileges that came from him being a celebrity. “Since I am looking at a home that I like, laughter comes forth from me on its own. And I had fun because everyone worked so hard. Thank you.” To my goodbye that thanked him for smiling while filming despite his fatigue, he responded as such. In this short goodbye, I was able to feel afresh the fact that a “home,” an “interior,” gives this kind of happy energy. And I also felt proud that Maison was able to contribute to this.
